I'm posting this mostly because the number of times I've referred back to my previous build thread:
https://hardforum.com/threads/new-threadripper-1950x-build.1964104/
to remind myself what was actually in the box was too many to count. Having this here for posterity will likely pay off...
Hey, yeah, TechPowerUp looks like a nice alternative. A reasonable homepage layout, and a good mix of news and reviews...just like our beloved. Thanks!
I have the Rift. The generally held position is that using only two cameras mounted in the HMD is going to be terrible for tracking the controllers. It's already questionable when using 4 cameras as compared to having 3 lighthouses.
I couldn't find a thread on this anywhere else, and though that "General Hardware" might be the best place for it? If it already exists somewhere else, please point me there...
But...
I wish Kyle the best.
However, this site has been my absolute go-to for honest reviews and tech news since...
Not a problem, just mindlessly followed the link...From the looks of the email from humble, he should be fine..it contains the unclaimed key, AFAICT.
Now I just need him to send me his email address...
EDIT: sent him the link here via PM.
ssnyder28, can you confirm that vnplayer was the target?
vnplayer, send me your email and I'll forward you the email from humble bundle to claim the key (which I haven't done yet, and I hope lets you actually grab it)
The point is probably moot. Your build timeline is this winter. By that time, there's at least a decent chance that the new 11xx line will be out. That will change things. I'd suggest you re-evaluate closer to your build time. Even the processor should be in question with a 6 month...
I had to add this just in case anyone stumbles on this thread later. I've just received an email that my order from Phantek's (customer service responding to my issue) is "out for delivery." So, contrary to what I found via google in the past, this was pretty fantastic customer service.
One more Noctua fan for the back of the heatsink, and one more Phanteks fan for the back of the case arrived. Also, a GPU bracket.
Everything is installed, and up and running. The new 2TB SSD arrives on Saturday, and I'm waiting for that to be installed before I deal with cable management on...
Phantek's been pretty good on support, it turns out. Have a tracking label for the replacement top mesh. Awaiting clarification on the fourth bolt to hold the tempered glass in place.
EDIT: Just received confirmation that they included the missing thumb screw in the shipment...I should be...
Phantek's responded to my email, no news yet on what they are going to do, or how long it will take.
Build went well last night. SSD and Memory are "out for delivery" today, so, assuming the thing boots, I'll be installing Windows tonight.
No real issues other than the fact that the front...
Motherboard, Power supply, GPU arrived today. m.2 ssd and memory tomorrow...and new SSD in another week (I was wrong about it landing tomorrow).
I was wrong about the specs saying it included 3 fans. So, I ordered a third case fan, and a second cpu cooler fan from Amazon. However...
I did...
Heatsink arrived. It's a beast.
Tracking everything else shows that I'll have an almost finished PC tomorrow... The memory will arrive on Tuesday, along with the new 2TB SSD that I decided to add yesterday. Figured it would be nice to have a 1TB Steam drive, and a 2TB "everything else"...
Yeah, that would be a fine solution...if only this case actually had more than 1 single 5.25" bay (that I'm using for my burner...yes, I still burn MP3 cds for my wife's car...).
In the end, if it bothers me enough, I'll get a USB external burner, and put in some USB ports in that bay.
A few...
The "M" stands for mid-tower, it would seem. The non-M is a full tower.
Full tower includes 3 fans, and a fan hub, and, most importantly (to me), four usb ports on the front of the case, instead of 2 on the left side of the case (which will face away from me...)
I can fit everything in the...
The case arrived.
First mistake. That's what you get for being impatient. I didn't realize that this is *not* just the Enthoo Pro with a tempered glass side panel. It's a different case entirely. I wouldn't have gotten this is if I had recognized the differences, but it isn't worth trying...
Ordered the following from B&H:
SeaSonic FOCUS Plus 850W Platinum
Samsung 512GB 970 Pro
MSI X399 Gaming Pro Carbon
ZOTAC 1080i AMP Extreme
Ordered the following from Amazon:
Noctua NH-U14S TR4-SP3 cooler
Ordered the following from NewEgg:
G.Skill Ripjaws 32GB (4 x 8GB) DDR4 3200
Phanteks...
Did some research. That case will be fine. Cheap, fits the cooler, has front USB ports. Done.
So, have I over sized the power supply by too much? Sounds like I can go down to 650 watts? Are most/all modern power supplies going to have the correct cables to power the threadripper MB?
Okay, after researching the cooler, and the horror stories about it clogging up, or the fans failing, I've decided to simplify (sort of), and go with this instead:
CPU Cooler: Noctua - NH-U14S TR4-SP3 140.2 CFM CPU Cooler ($79.90 @ Amazon)
It does mean that I have to be careful about not...
First off, thanks for the response!
I'm aware. The issue is really timing. My son will be going back to school early Sept., I feel like we need a good month to feel like both of our new rigs are "finished" (both will be bare metal installs, and we need real time to re-install everything that...
1) What will you be doing with this PC? Gaming? Photoshop? Web browsing? etc
Yes. (no, really, all of the above, see details below)
2) What's your budget? Are tax and shipping included?
$3Kish
3) Which country do you live in? If the U.S, please tell us the state and city if possible.
Just...
I can't quite be 10 years, since my current rig is about 5 years old and has one... But, thanks for the response and link. At $19 the question was barely worth asking!
EDIT TO ADD: Checked...ASUS Sabertooth Z77, from 2012, so 6 years! (I guess that is *almost* "the better part of" 10 years...
Is IEEE-1394 even a thing anymore?
I'm looking to build a new rig and still need to pull video off of DV cameras which use firewire. Am I stuck having to purchase a PCI card to get a firewire port on a new rig?
Thanks.

Yeah, the curve jives with my experience...it's either dead on arrival or nearly so...and after that, it generally lives until you want to replace it anyway. Not too concerned with long warranties.
I guess I "wanted" 32GB only because that's what I have in my current rig, and I do run VMs, and...
The photo of the 2nd box seems to indicate that the power supply is a thermaltake smart series. One other thing I noticed from the photo (if it can be trusted) is that it is a single 16 gb dimm...no dual channel. Of course,. since it is open box, I can have a look at it in person to decide if...
Thanks. I forgot that I left the pcpartspicker list with 32gigs....probably overkill. No issue with 16gigs.
Yep, the first one has a 480 gb ssd which is the bare minimum I'd want, but the second one has a 500gb m.2 boot drive. That's livable (I have plenty of spare ssds around that will get...
So, I always build my own machines...but I'm having trouble justifying it against this time? Someone tell me where I've gone wrong in my thinking?
Here's where I started:
https://pcpartpicker.com/list/3zDGLJ
This was basically off the cuff. Not much thought involved. (also, prices will be...
TBH, I'm not sure...The only time it has ever kicked in, I've been glad it did. Not at all intrusive...more along the lines of "Oh, hmm, didn't realize it was all that slippery out there, thanks!" So, I haven't been inclined to figure out how to turn it off (unlike, say, the 94 Supra which was...
