    HP ProLiant MicroServer owners' thread

I guess I am missing something but is there something that makes those hard drives special that would warrant 2-3x market cost for what basically looks like a normal SATA drive with an HP logo? The way it reads I dont think they are like enterprise class or anything or am I missreading?

using less ram would require less power but IMO this thing is so slim I dont think the RAM is really where the most power draw is from. *edit* n/m my question, discovered my issue was the network.. redid it as software raid and am getting a solid 400+ mb/s r/w in crystal disk now.

You can get something that is similar in windows if its connected to a switch that supports it. You can Bridge the nics together in windows then configure the ports on the switch as LAG ports and the result should be amount the same.

You should be able to replace it with a psu of similar dimensions. Its not completely proprietary as far as I can see. Something like this I think. http://www.ebay.com/itm/Athena-Power-AP-MFATX30-300W-Mini-ITX-Micro-FLEX-ATX-ATX12V-80-PLUS-/320968993930#vi-content

I was able to boot to ESXi5 from a thumdrive on mine without issue (plain version) Try a different thumbdrive perhaps? Or try it in a different machine to see? I dont use ESXi on this box though I just had the drive from another project and tested it.

The RAID 5 array has faster drives than what is in the HP Micro (info on that can be found in the 10TB show-off thread). Even in Raid 0 the HP doesnt run as fast as the primary server so its primary purpose was as a backup to that server and a destination for Acronis images from our PC's at...

I am well aware of what RAID 0 is, and I use it as a BACKUP, not a primary, as in a second place to store data. There is nothing wrong with a RAID 0 for something like that. If anything fails I replace the drive, re-image the machine and resync the data, would take less than a day at the speed...

Just got mine up and running finally, slowly been collecting drives for it. Currently its just a RAID 0 of 4x 2TB drives and is running server 2008 R2. Eventually I will add 2 more 1TB drives I have hanging around. It is currently being kept as a daily backup from my main storage using...

Not really sure why the fearmongering with a failed backplane. 1) how often does a backplane going out actually kill drives? Never heard of it do that 2) unless you are using an extremely cheap RAID card they can handle losing several drives just fine as long as they dont actually fail...

Have you tested this raid card in another system to ensure it is working properly? Not being able to even get into its BIOS may be an issue here.

You dont need an extra one technically. The VM will share the NIC as needed. @javasdk; have you updated the BIOS on the hp server and the raid card? I would give that a try first. Also check that you dont have something USB plugged in just to check.

There have been a couple on here but not many. I think the main issue is just cost. Its hard for a home user to justify spending 2-3x as much for SSDs when it comes down to it we really dont need what they have to offer. The heat is one thing and it would be noticable but honestly it would...

you gotta hide that pr0n somewhere! And as for entrance requirements. easiest way to avoid these 'workstations' that have been posted. Leave the 10TB req, but just add that you must be using an add-on card. on board raid doesn't count. That will take care of all the other questions of...

    Dell PowerEdge R410

When they are not under full load they really dont seem that loud. Heck Ive got an ASA5510 sitting on my desk and I cant hear people standing in the door talking. The R410 and R710s in the back are barely as loud imo. The older 17xx and 19xx series servers are another matter though.

whats your power bill each month?

having a well paying job ;) or probably by having roommates in some cases. Also cost of living varies greatly. for example my mortgage on the place I just bought is $775 +hoa fees per month and it covers everything except power and internet. so I could afford a $500 power bill if I had to :D

    Online RAID capacity expansion risks?

I would plan for the possibility of total loss, which is another reason why RAID isnt a replacement for a backup ;) I have had a 19 drive RAID 5 array have multiple drive failures during the rebuild of the first failure. Lost about 20% of the data on the entire array from that iirc.

HP's New micro Server (mod plans)

an interested little device indeed. It is also rather cheap for being a complete, SFF server. Certainly a nice choice for an SMB NAS solution. One odd thing is that I see the option to get extra MS licenses but I didnt see any mention of the OS itself, kind of strange.

    2 Cases 1 PSU?

The problem you will run into is power requirements not a lack of connectors. If you have a nice beefy PSU in the first norco case, and have controller cards that can do staggered spinup then yes you probably can pull it off. You will want to engineer it with some disconnects of some kind...

Fast 4 bay NAS with RAID01/10

Since I didn't see it mentioned yet always remember that RAID is not a replacement for backups. about 6 months ago I had a little NAS box die, in almost identical circumstances (design team for a printing company even) and took half the data with it. Thankfully most of the data was backed up...

    DL380 G3 cpu downgrade

whats your power bill each month?

I guess it has more of an affect than I thought. The insulation is good however so its just the weatherstripping that is fail and the duct system wasn't designed well for the apartments layout. How in the world can people be spending sub $50 on their electric bill? I think the lowest Ive ever seen my bill in the summer time was just under $200. and $125 ~ish in the winter. Granted the AC is grossly inefficient in my place and the sealing on the windows is terrible but good lord $15...

Really couldnt agree more. Havent really seen any 'cheap' NAS live up to its task of being reliable. though oddly enough an aftermarket NAS thing I got after the lacie died has lasted a good bit longer (used the drives from teh lacie) but I still will never buy one of those things again. No...

I have had both a lacie and several buffalo NAS' fail catastrophically. If you are looking to add storage to a network then avoid them like the plague.
