    new threadrippers announced

Same socket and pro cpus will work on both chip sets, but lose the pro features on trx50. However, that means up to 96 cores on trx50.... Unsure if that means you can oc the pro cpus on trx50 (which let's face it the only reason you'd run the pro on trx50 is for the 96 core 7995WX).

    new threadrippers announced

Interesting strategy - I thought the move to pro only made sense but I guess enough folks decided they'd had enough after getting shafted on the single generation 3000 series that they changed tack - but if it's a single gen again, not sure they get a lot of takers, though there will be a nice...

So, what are you rocking for VR?

Varjo Aero with 5800x3d and 4090FE. Mostly iRacing with some MSFS and others thrown in there. I have a set of Vive wands for other games but mostly do sims. I like Onward a lot, have played some War Dust, HL Alyx and a few others.

Spare parts evolve shift XT build

The x370gtn is like a 2018 board, so over 5 years old at this point. The rest of the stuff is all 2-3 years old other than the new motherboard and the case/psu, which is a little over a year old at this point, but yeah, it's a really nice system tbh. I almost had a moment of insanity and...

Spare parts evolve shift XT build

For my daughter, using spare parts I had. It was originally built using a really old biostar x370gtn, 3700x, 16gb of Corsair lpx3000 and noctua l9i from her old system. I added an rtx 3090 from when I upgraded to a 4090. I purchased the phanteks evolve shift XT and 850w psu and crammed it all...

7800X3D will be an utter failure of a CPU

I think it's a CP thing, mine does the same thing on a different platform (see sig). Once loaded it all works fine, it's just the splash screen that's messed up.

I have not noticed it on mine.

7950X vs 7950X3D, which one and why?

I mean, if it was 25-35% over the 5800x3d I'd probably do it, it's just not that much. The bigger allure is the gaming performance plus cores this time around, so that may still get me to upgrade.

7950X vs 7950X3D, which one and why?

I was as well, going to sit this gen out (for the first time since zen1). Total cost due to needing a new platform is too much given the fairly minor performance jump. If I get back into doing a lot of photogrammetry I could see making the move, but I don't do it enough at this point to really...

AM4 PCIE instability with 3090FE and riser cable

Upgraded my daughter's computer with leftovers from my recent upgrades - went from a very small (sub 5L) sff with biostar x370gtn, 3700X, corsair lpx 3000 cl15 ram, and gtx1650 with a short pcie riser cable, no issues with the system, running reliably for almost 3 years. I put the board and...

Who else is waiting on Zen 4 x3D before upgrading?

As I said earlier, realtek lets you remap the audio ports. As long as it has 3 3.5mm jacks on the rear, you can map them to your 5.1 speaker setup. I did this on a b350 board before moving to a receiver so I could run more sources. No need for the audio breakout panel, but that could be useful...

Who else is waiting on Zen 4 x3D before upgrading?

Most realtek codecs can have the ports re-mapped (if you don't need the mic and/or line in). I've done this in the past to get my surround speakers working. I then wanted some other things to be able to use the speakers and just bought a proper receiver with hdmi input and then hooked the...

Who else is waiting on Zen 4 x3D before upgrading?

The 2 ccd chips should at minimum match the non-3d parts in productivity but kill them in gaming. I like what they've done tbh, we get high clocks for apps that need that more than the cache, and more cache for those (games) that do. The big question mark is will we need to manually lasso...

Who else is waiting on Zen 4 x3D before upgrading?

Finally! You can build a 7900X3d+7900XTX! However, no x770 chipset, unlike the x570 where we could have an x570+5700X+5700XT. If only they had made a 5700X3D and 5700XTX so we could get all the suffixes...

    Swap 5950X for 5800x3d?

I did the same. Big jump in games that aren't GPU limited, drop off in productivity, as expected. I do a lot of VR with games that hammer the cpu, like msfs and iRacing. I also do photogrammetry, which can use all the cores it can get, so it was a trade off but I haven't swapped back. I had...

Who else is waiting on Zen 4 x3D before upgrading?

It depends... If we get a 16 core part, most likely. If it's 8 core I'll be out unless it's at least a 15% bump in games. It also will depend on if I can actually get ahold of a 4090.

    Quest Pro

Yep, this is next gen but a year early. For that privilege, you pay a grand extra. Face tracking, eye tracking, full color pass through for mixed reality, controllers with their own tracking, fully wireless and the ability to do foveated rendering which coupled with the more powerful precessor...

    Ryzen 4 Reviews Are Out.

I'll be waiting for the x3d chips to upgrade. Might go for a 4090 but will have to wait for reviews. This is the first zen generation I haven't bought at launch, the x3d is just too good. I'm hoping they figure out the x3d clocks and pbo to allow proper boosting along with higher core parts as...

    Varjo Aero

I haven't tried dx12 in it in a while, will give it a shot next time I fire it up. I figured that I'm getting a roughly 30% resolution bump with foveated rendering, I can go from 27ppd to 37ppd with the same performance. At that res it's really exposing the limitations of the game engines...

    Varjo Aero

Touching base back here again - OpenXR toolkit enables dynamic (eye tracked) foveated rendering for most OpenXR games and all I can say is "wow". With that enabled the resolution gets bumped up even more, so you get even better clarity with increased performance. MSFS looks almost real. It's...

    Should I?

Coming from an owner of a high end consumer headset (varjo aero), which I really like, the quest 2 is the best overall. You can run it wireless (including pc), has the most games, and the iq is decent, even if there are others with better. It has the least major compromises imo, and the price...

5800x3D - How can it be tamed?

iRacing in VR hammers it. Nothing else I have does but a race start with a full grid at Nurburgring or Lemans maxes a single core and it can't quite keep up with the 3090.

My AMD Ryzen 5950x is a beast of a CPU! I cruise with averages around 4700mhz. Extremely happy with going with AMD instead of INTEL for gaming / prod

I went the opposite way, pulled my 5950x for a 5800x3d as I just wasn't using the cores very often at all - only when doing photogrammetry which I don't do nearly as often as other less core intensive tasks. Big boost in some of my vr games with the x3d, I had the 5950 pushed as hard as my...

Will Zen 4 be the real deal and a worthy upgrade from Zen 3

This, if you can run current gen with pbo, zen4 shouldn't be too much of an issue. My guess is they will be pushing the boost right out of the gate so it will behave like current gen with pbo on and not have much additional headroom unless you push silicon fit. Most with a good 240 aio or more...

    Oculus Quest 2

+1 to Thrill of the Fight, I've had to quit a fight on my stool as I was too worn out to go on to the next round. I started sitting and used a towel between rounds to recover, but admittedly it was early on and I was fighting like a spaz and punching myself out. If you get to some of the...

Will Zen 4 be the real deal and a worthy upgrade from Zen 3

Looking at what they've shown so far I think we'll get 5800x3d gaming perf +5% ish but with 16 cores. The 3d v-cache version should give a larger jump, but we'll see. I'd expect that when Intel launches 13th gen, so ~ next spring.

    Threadripper is no more!

Yeah, at this point tr is not for enthusiasts, it's for professionals that need the power it provides for business purposes and will be paying for itself. For the enthusiast, it's 9-18 months behind desktop on core technology and platform features along with requiring a new board every 2 years...

Will Zen 4 be the real deal and a worthy upgrade from Zen 3

I think if you want 5800x3d gaming perf but with 16 cores it'll be worth it, but outside of that kind of doubtful given the cost of ddr5 and lack of any pcie5 peripherals. Pcie4 doesn't even make much difference yet.

    Threadripper is no more!

Sounds like vanilla threadripper IS dead, but pro will be diy as well as oem and integrator as amd is (as expected) consolidating to a single platform. https://www.phoronix.com/scan.php?page=news_item&px=AMD-PRO-5000-WX-Update

Did I Degrade or Destroy my 5950x? Now with a response from Asus on page 2!

Have you done any further CO work? It seems odd, but you are getting consistent results and the scores are pretty good. I have aggressively CO optimize my 5950X and don't get much higher scores than that (my board limits are at ~205W), I get 4.4-4.5 ghz all core, and hit around 85C. Basically...

Did I Degrade or Destroy my 5950x? Now with a response from Asus on page 2!

What PBO limits do you have enabled? It sounds like it was enabled previously and is now off (leaving stock power limits, which will have somewhat minimal gains with CO). Try enabling PBO with board limits and see if the scores return to where they were - that will not over-volt the cpu, just...

So, am I the only one that AMD treats like a criminal when requesting an RMA?

A buddy of mine got two bad 5900X's, one of them just stopped working, after RMA the other would throw periodic whea errors. After TONS (and I mean tons) of troubleshooting because he couldn't believe he got two bad cpu's, it was determined to be the 5900X as he tried a different cpu and had...

5800X3D hits 90C for REALLY simple things...

If coolant temps are only hitting 30C it's definitely not a case/airflow issue. It's a heat transfer issue.

5800X3D hits 90C for REALLY simple things...

Yep, sounds like an internal cooler issue or misconfiguration. If you can monitor pump speed and coolant temps, it'd give an idea of what's going on. In my AIO the cpu temp doesn't go over 80C unless it's a long load and coolant temp goes over 35C, which takes 5-10 minutes on all core PBO load...

    RTX3080/3090 heat exhaust output

I've stuck my hand on the output of my 3090 when it was fully loaded and it wasn't hot enough to be uncomfortable, let alone hot enough to burn me (which it'd have to be to damage wiring). It was warm for sure, but not what I'd consider hot. I did not check all of the metal surfaces of the...

    Should I upgrade? 3700X/X470 > 5950X/X570

After seeing reviews, I'd go 5800x3d in your x370 board when a bios is available. It'll be the cheapest and most effective final upgrade for gaming purposes. I have a 5800x3d sitting on my desk waiting to get some side by side testing against my pbo/co 5950 in VR (as that's the only thing that...
