How do you get WU to ignore Malicious software removal tool download?

The point is the updates exist for a reason, so update and be done with it. Everytime someone "goes against the flow" we end up with just another one of these pointless threads where someone whines and cries about Windows for whatever reason. Funny, I don't see a single person anywhere...

Of course it supports 2GB of RAM, if you can afford it.

8GB RAM - The Final Thread.

"It's called a RAMdisk, and it can make your machine run circles around anything..." 8GB... yeah, that would be the bare minimum if I were building a "Godbox" anytime soon. 4GB is so passe anymore... 2GB, why bother. You can get 8GB for under $200 these days, sometimes under $150 if you catch...

QFT. Or you could just think of Macs as the consoles of the PC world as they always have been. :)

How do you get WU to ignore Malicious software removal tool download?

I install every single update that's available on Windows Update for any version of Windows I happen to run, and honestly, I have never had anything ever "nag" me about a damned thing. How some of you folks end up with such issues is beyond me, I swear... If you don't want the updates, don't...

My e6600 hit over 113 degrees. What can I do?

You folks reporting 80C+ temps must have something wrong in your machines, or your temp indicators are way off in terms of accuracy. When Intel says "The maximum temp this processor will be able to withstand is 80C" that means when and if the processor core thermal diode reads 80C that processor...

Quad Core only showing 3 cores?

It wasn't meant as a joke, but I can see how some people would think such a thing. I still say it's defective and I still say return it. Surely he's not going to put "It won't overclock correctly" as the reason for the return, all he'd have to state is it's not stable and everything else in the...

Software utility that monitors system calls etc.?

The guys at Sysinternals used to make all those neat sorts of tools like that, Process Explorer, DLL Monitor, RegMonitor, etc... I'm sure they're still available even though Microsoft put all those people on its payroll in early 2006 iirc...

Please recommend a "ghost" application that meets my need

Acronis True Image, when you install the software in Windows, will do that, yes. It can do live imaging meaning it doesn't require you to reboot the PC just to make the image - but if you need to restore an image you'll have to reboot, and the software would handle all of that for you.

Building a new PC, not sure about the OS?

Uhmmm... no. XP 32 bit is not faster than XP x64 on the same 64 bit capable machine, I assure you. Most everything in that statement above is inaccurate: 32 bit OSes have an upper limit on their addressable RAM, that's a given with any 32 bit OS - it's not just Windows. 32 bit applications...

    External battery pack for iPod/Mp3/Cell phone/PDA $9

I don't see how a device powered by 2 AA batteries - that's 2 x 1.5 volts = 3, or if you put rechargeables in it that would be roughly 2 x 1.2 volts = 2.4 - is putting out either 4.3 volts or even better 4.7 volts. I'm going to guess they made a typo and it should say "Uses 4AA batteries" 'cause...

    Azureus or Utorrent

If anyone here thinks that they're "safe" when they're connected to the Internet as we know it today, you're all sadly mistaken. Nothing is "safe" anymore, there is no anonymity and there hasn't been for many a yarn now. Use it, don't use it, either way, if someone wants to "track" you, they...

    XPLite

nLite is the one tool to use if you're interested in "trimming the fat," so to speak. It's the only XP-trimming utility worth a damn. XPLite has always been lackluster and leaves a trail of broken installs and wasted CD media behind it; nLite is solid, has a huge community of support, and nuhi...

Quad Core only showing 3 cores?

Did anyone stop to think it's just fuckin' defective? :D Send it back to Intel and get one that works properly... it's under warranty, so why waste time debating the situation. If you (meaning the OP) have done everything under the sun that you're capable of doing to verify the system is...

Finally got in with that second more direct link to sign up, expecting whatever... and... bleh. If they've been around 2 years and that's all they've got, oh well... I miss the big green demon, though, that was actually somewhat useful unlike all the imitators. ;)

Thumbnail Gallery Creator... help me, my [H]ard brethren...

I grabbed it and gave it a few runs around the block. It does work as advertised, but it simply doesn't allow me to create the layout I'm particularly interested in having, nor does it let me adequately modify the information I'd like to show with each thumbnail. The intention was/is to create a...

    Firefox and back button behavior

Proper browser behavior should return you to the point where you were before, so if you've scrolled down to a place on a page, click a link, then decide to go Back, the browser "should" return you to the very place you were. One reason I think Firefox does that is because it caches pages in RAM...

will disk imaging software restore everything?

<cracks knuckles for a mini-mega-post...> Yes, both functions are possible with True Image as long as you're using the Windows client software. By that I mean the software that runs while Windows is in operation because you can (and it's HIGHLY RECOMMENDED THAT YOU DO) make "Recovery Media"...

My e6600 hit over 113 degrees. What can I do?

You guys are getting your Celsius and your Fahrenheit scales mixed up. 298C would be roughly 568F so, there's simply no way in this reality a processor would ever get anywhere near 568 degrees Fahrenheit - it's simply impossible. The 113 was most likely being read as Fahrenheit and not...

Ah, that's an online service, and not quite what I had in mind. I'm trying to create a local gallery, but thanks for the heads up. The gallery is up to over 2,400 pics now so... that measly 200 pic thing at that site, well, that just ain't enough. :D

My e6600 hit over 113 degrees. What can I do?

I distinctly remember watching ZDTV (before it became TechTV) and "The Screensavers" many years ago. They had an episode where they were building an Abit BP6 dual Celeron system. They got the whole thing done (it was done in bits and pieces, of course, off camera most of the time) but the actual...

My e6600 hit over 113 degrees. What can I do?

I think there's still a video out there someplace of some idiots (the world is full of 'em, yanno) that had an AMD Athlon machine, might have been a Celeron I can't remember for sure, and they were holding the HSF onto the CPU (it wasn't attached normally as it should have been). They turned the...

Dual or Quad - what's best bang for the buck?

I think the issue here is that most of you people don't seem to understand the concept of multithreading: you don't write code that only works on 2 cores of a 4 core processor and nothing else, and it's ridiculous to keep perpetrating that myth. Someone already mentioned how one game that...

My e6600 hit over 113 degrees. What can I do?

Well, that's why I went into detail about how such temps are impossible with today's processors. The only way one would ever hit 113C would be if the entire thermal protection circuit itself was totally FUBARed and the chip just skyrocketed out of control in terms of temps. It would probably...

Dual or Quad - what's best bang for the buck?

See, the amazing thing about these threads is that new people never bother to read them. The person that just posted above me is a perfect example: he said something that's been said and discussed and outright blasted as fallacy several times already in this thread. Rule of thumb: don't jump...

My e6600 hit over 113 degrees. What can I do?

The "worldwide standard" nowadays and for the last decade or so has been to quote or discuss CPU or computer temps in general in Celsius, not Fahrenheit, sooo... 113F = 45C which is fairly nominal. Intel processors are rated up to what, 74-75C these days before thermal shutdown occurs - whoever...

    Windows Server 2003 Graphics Drivers

It's a server OS, so Nvidia isn't required to provide support for more than the most basic VGA compatibility. To be honest, they're not required to do anything, but they do it as a courtesy to be honest, so does every other video card maker, but that's another thread. XP drivers work fine...

Please recommend a "ghost" application that meets my need

Because you can image a system in operation nowadays, and do it with zero issues whatsoever, I guess. :) It might not have been possible in days long past, but you can do it now, so it's a viable option for system backup. I'm always going to recommend Acronis True Image for this stuff, that's...

The concept of one version of uTorrent "tracking" your usage and another one not tracking your usage is ridiculous. Acronis 9

Acronis (when you install the Windows client software - I just make the CD and use that personally) will allow you to "mount" any drive image you've made as an accessible drive in Explorer, that's been something it has done since way back to version 7. There is also just the basic ability to...

A winner? Far from it... This one particular person states "almost double the cost and nothing to show for it" and this entire thread has been about processors that are nearly the same cost if not exactly the same cost. Just because this one person can't find anything to do with his PC that...

Considering that every time Fry's has done this type of 320GB drive deal for the past 4-6 months or so, and considering that every time the drives turn out to be 7200.10, then yeah, I'd hazard to guess they're 7200.10 drives.
