    Google Pixel 3

My USB-C port is almost completely dead. I've been using the Pixel Stand to charge it but when I try to plug it into my car for Android Auto, I get spotty connectivity at best. Highly annoying. Tried using other cables and the wall charger and the phone barely even charges without holding the...

    Vlans

It's a bit more complicated than that. If you want devices from separate VLANs to communicate with each other, you need routing in between to route traffic between the subnets. This can be accomplished in a variety of different ways depending on several factors.

Meraki MX64 or Sophos UTM9 or Pfsense

Meraki is for IT departments and CIOs that don't want to invest in Network Engineers, hence the opex cost. If you want to do application filtering, use PFSense and local applications installed directly on devices. Let a stateful firewall be a stateful firewall. If you want any sort of NGFW...

Looking to go to 10gb at home; should I do multi-gig switch?

How long are your cat6 runs? 10G is not rated to work over cat6 at 100 meters. I think it will only work at 40 meters, tops. If you need to go longer, you need to upgrade to CAT6a.

Dual NIC question for a networking idiot

This would only work for SMB only though - nothing else, correct? Make sure whatever card you buy supports LACP and has multiple interfaces. 802.1q vlan tagging may be handy as well depending on what you do day to day.

Dual NIC question for a networking idiot

I have not heard of this before. If you are trying to transfer one 50 gb file, how is windows able to take advantage of both NICs with two source IPs and one destination? What happens when you are not in the same Layer 2 segment as your server - how does Windows figure out which NIC to use to...

    Crap Wifi, tons of APs

Disable 2.4 and go all 5. Add more AP's if you have to but 2.4 is pretty much always going to be unusable with that kind of outside noise.

    Need some VPN advice

Weeeelllll....it's certainly possible. It just requires BGP peering and OP paying for his own /24 as they are no longer available from ARIN and injecting it into the global internet routing table. The limiting factor here are your ISPs which certainly wouldn't do this for a residential customer...

Network Rack Ideas - short patch cables okay?

I would, definitely. I'm curious how long your "short" patches will hold up considering how much bend radius you will have to apply to connect from patch panel to switch for the rack on the left. Another reason why I don't like switches right above/below patch panels.
  19. C

Network Rack Ideas - short patch cables okay?

Not a fan of inserting switches between patch panels - you need space behind the panels to actually run and terminate the ethernet drops into the punch downs and the fat switches get in the way for the techs. Additionally, it makes it much harder to properly stack the switches without making...

Only Plebs Use Office 2019 over Office 365, Says Microsoft's Weird New Ad Campaign

Every medium enterprise + small business that I've done business with over the past 5 years or so has gone 100% office 365 with the exception of the Google Apps shops. The savings over paying an external exchange provider plus individually buying office licenses for every employee is huge. It's...

Only Plebs Use Office 2019 over Office 365, Says Microsoft's Weird New Ad Campaign

Internet at this point in time is just as a vital of a utility as electricity is. If internet goes down in any office environment that I know of, people go and work from home. I guess it's downside for those who live off the grid in the boonies and drink their own piss but I doubt using...

    Large/old Home Router/Network planning help

Based on your skill level, I think Google's mesh solution is much better than a unifi setup which needs constant tweaking before you get it right. Buy 3 Google WiFi hubs, hardwire at least 1 per floor, add additional ones where you see poor coverage.

Album Sales Are Dying as Fast as Streaming Services Are Rising

Those albums still exist but they are mainly in niche dramas and no longer seen in the main stream in my experience. I find myself listening to music in the car just for background noise. I don't nearly enjoy it as much as when I was younger.

California Officially Becomes First in Nation Mandating Solar Power for New Homes

In 10-20 years, they will determine that the panels contain materials harmful to the environment and can not be disposed of via conventional means. You will then be mandated to pay an additional $8-10k to "properly" dispose of them and "remediate" Watch it happen. States of done the same...

    Unreal Tournament 4/2015

You won't but I'm sure the 12 year olds playing it today will. Problem with UT in 2018 that it didn't have 20 years ago is that games must now drive so many other different sources of revenue. E-Sports, merchandise, loot boxes, in game appearances, stores, etc. The base price of a video game...

    Google Pixel 3

I have been using the new navigation layout on my Pixel 2XL since the latest update. There is some adjustment time but after the adjustment, I prefer it over the old 3 button system. Apple Says No to Sex and Violence for Its Streaming Service

They're not trying to appeal to adults - there is a whole generation that grew up watching YouTube rather than traditional TV based services about to get their first cashier/local type jobs that will easily be able to afford $10/month. This and the under 30's is Netflix's target, not the middle...

Telltale Games Studio Shutters Doors Due to Low Sales

YouTube killed these games. Why buy the games when you can watch them on YT for free? There's so many people playing and recording them that I'm sure you can watch any combination of decisions that you want. Made no sense to me why they allowed that.

    High-Availability IPs

His post to me seems to indicate that the configuration is on the server OS level, not the network infrastructure level but I be mis-assuming.
  33. C

    High-Availability IPs

You are talking at a completely different level though - HSRP, VRRP, Load Balancers are all designed for this. What OP described seems to be something setup on the server/application level.
  34. C

    High-Availability IPs

In traditional HSRP or VRRP each box has its own unique IP in the same L2 subnet with a VIP (virtual IP) shared between both of them. Using multicast and broadcast, they elect a leader and the VIP simply points to the IP of the box that is elected and fails over to the other IP if the first box...

“What the Hell Does Valve Even Do Anymore (besides Take Our Money)?”

Valve is in decline IMO. No major new titles not based on the HL2 Source engine for almost 15 years now, game client falling behind, major release titles no longer being offered on their platform, bloated and old looking software, etc. Their library now seems to consist of just indy titles and...
