CBS Makes Star Trek: Picard Pilot Free On YouTube 'For a Limited Time'

Assumption: this isn't Federation space. This episode mentioned the collapse of the Neutral zone. Apparently the Romulan Star Empire fell apart after the nova. Patrick Stewart wanted to tell everyone that Orange Man Bad. I know you said "let's not bring real world bs into what I wrote...

Tiger handheld game systems coming this fall for $15

I read somewhere that someone found a way to breed out whatever it was that made them taste so nasty, so they're a lot better than they used to be.

That's both impressive and ugly as hell.

Intel's 10th-gen processors haven't been announced, but they are for sale

I think the idea is that Intel hasn't come right out and said on the record that the next socket is 1200 pins, even though there's been leaks. An actual product saying it works with a socket that nobody's seen yet though is probably a pretty good confirmation.

You're gonna get people in here telling you if you don't have every last one of them you run the risk of melting your CPU at some point.

He also points out noise levels. A case that has to run the fans faster is going to be louder. If you care about a quiet environment that might matter to you.

Tesla disables feature after car is purchased, claims feature 'wasn't paid for'.

I'd need a BIG raise for that. Uh, so to speak. More money, I mean.

Tesla disables feature after car is purchased, claims feature 'wasn't paid for'.

Yeah. I wouldn't call that a subcription/service/SaaS in the modern sense, because to me that means you pay a monthly fee for ongoing access, and if you stop paying, you lose the functionality, just like cable.

Tesla disables feature after car is purchased, claims feature 'wasn't paid for'.

To suggest it's a service, is my guess. But unless you're paying a monthly fee, it's not really a service. You pay $7000 or whatever up front for the feature and lifetime updates, right? That makes it not a service. (I don't know, I don't have a Tesla.)

Tesla disables feature after car is purchased, claims feature 'wasn't paid for'.

That's not a Tesla-specific thing. I used to own a Kia Sedona and started it up one day only to hear a nasty whir/thumping noise coming from the dash. Worked my way back behind there and found a dead mouse inside the fan.

    The $600 quantum computer

It depends. Remember https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/2007_Boston_Mooninite_panic? You walk around like that at MIT you're likely to get a visit from a SWAT team. (More seriously, I used to hang around MIT in the 90s and don't recall people wearing stuff like this even at the Media Lab.)

    The $600 quantum computer

I love that the article pairs this picture with the claim that "QUBY was downsized so that it fits in a backpack and is therefore untraceable." Dude, it's a frigging Ghostbusters Proton Pack. It's the exact opposite of inconspicuous. You don't trace it, you follow the guy wearing it around...

Tesla disables feature after car is purchased, claims feature 'wasn't paid for'.

That's a fascinatingly horrifying theory. Just imagine doing that with features that are actually hardware, not software. "We're going to take the satellite radio out and replace it with a basic FM/AM radio so it sells faster." Or pick any other optional feature. "We're going to take the V8...

Philips Hue vulnerability lets hacker control bulbs, could escalate to network

Yeah, Walmart seems to have been pushing the price of LED bulbs down. Personally I like the whiter light of them for, say, reading lamps.

"Star Trek: Discovery" Renewed for Season 3

Is it my imagination, or at the beginning of Picard episode 3, when a shuttlecraft is landing, just for a second it makes the Jetson's spaceship burble? Edit: Ok, I found the original sound on YT and no, it's not the same, but it's pretty similar.

Philips Hue vulnerability lets hacker control bulbs, could escalate to network

The heat they give off has use in some cases. Seen those pictures of LED traffic lights covered in snow, because the LEDs don't heat up enough to melt it?

Philips Hue vulnerability lets hacker control bulbs, could escalate to network

First I'd heard of it. But I was addressing the point about cheap bulbs no longer being available. Sure, they're not as cheap as they used to be, but they're still there.

CBS Makes Star Trek: Picard Pilot Free On YouTube 'For a Limited Time'

I once heard someone talking about anime and saying it seemed like a lot of them put in gratuitous fan service to get the show green-lit (I guess under the theory that the money people wouldn't do so without that extra lure) but then tended to drop it after a few episodes. I see the lowbrow...

CBS Makes Star Trek: Picard Pilot Free On YouTube 'For a Limited Time'

Reminds me of the cliffhanger when they went back in time to 19th Century San Francisco and pretended to be actors. The landlady thought they were riff-raff just because of their claimed job, because actors were thought to be mostly shiftless at that point in time.

Yeah, TBH I was thinking of the transition from Romana I to Romana II when I wrote that. It's still dumb, but it's part of why I said I consider the show a fairy tale and not SF.

CBS Makes Star Trek: Picard Pilot Free On YouTube 'For a Limited Time'

She used a TARDIS design that was a throwaback to the first-second Doctor era: old-school white walls with the roundels, and the console looked more like it did way way back then, so most likely not a future version. Never mind that it totally screws up the show lore, though.

I get that, but you know what? To me she so encapsulated the spirit of the character from the original run I didn't care. They never explained why they genderbent Missy and that's fine, because she was true to the character. The Doctor, we all know they did it for the sake of doing it. (Oh...

I really liked Capaldi's character, and the reimagining of the Master as Missy was nothing short of brilliant, especially after the buffoonish performance of the guy before; it's just a pity the writing was so bad. The last season was pretty bad, but this season is crazy. Two episodes already...

A couple of years ago Doctor Who did something similarly-dumb: they ran into a regiment of English soldiers from like the mid-1800s, who'd somehow gotten transported to Mars. So far, so good, but they had an Indian guy as one of the soldiers...something that never happened at that point in...

Intel Xe DG1 GPU Up To 40% Faster Than AMD Vega Integrated

One thing the WTFTech article mentions is that both the integrated and discrete versions of DG1 contain the same number of execution units, so they're basically the same card. That sounds good...but you have to remember the iDG1 will be slower.
