The P9X79-E WS should overclock just fine though. I have (but have been trying to sell FOREVER) the previous version, P9X79 WS and I couldn't tell much difference between it and the RIVE for overclocking in normal air-cooling situations.
I went full throttle and grabbed the Z87X-OC Force, mainly because I wanted the easy hands-free voltage read points and for some reason Asus did not retain that feature from the Maximus V Extreme when designing the Maximus VI.
I don't think it will either. The specs on that adapter only claim up to 2.25Gbps which equates to Standard HDMI. From the HDMI official homepage:
Standard (or category 1) HDMI cables have been tested to perform at speeds of 75Mhz or up to 2.25Gbps, which is the equivalent of a 720p/1080i...
Took my open box U3011 back to Micro Center, seeing as how the price of a brand new one has dropped to $1099 or so practically *everywhere*. I grabbed a NIB one from Fry's, Rev. A08. Can't really tell any difference in the AG coating from the A01 I had before.
You can do a custom resolution with HD4000 depending on the driver. I had to roll back to an older one as the newest doesn't have the options anymore. But it will only do 40Hz at 2560x1600.
HD4000 can probably do it with a custom resolution, but likely not at 60Hz. I can try it as I have a desktop with Z77 chipset/i5 3570K which has HD4000.
My Asus G75VW can do 2560x1600 on my U3011 using HDMI, at 60Hz, using the Nvidia Control Panel to create a custom resolution. I only do this when I want sound through my 5.1 speakers that are connected to the monitor and the DisplayPort input is already taken by my desktop, otherwise I just use...
Just an interesting tibit:
Monoprice asked if I could take some pictures of the dead pixel area and irregularities, so I had to unbox the darn thing after I went through so much trouble to pack it up. Anyway, I didn't want to bother with DVI and I sure as HECK wasn't going to hook up a...
I've decided to send mine back for a refund. In the meantime I got to take a look at a U3011 and the sRGB emulation mode and loved it, so I picked up an open box one from my local Micro Center.
U3011 can be had for around $1099 new, under $1000 if refurbished or open-box. I haven't been able to find any prices on the U3014 but I'm sure it'll be $1499 or so.
I haven't decided what I'll do yet. I could get an open-box U3011 from a local Micro Center for under $1000 if I decide to send it back. I don't think I can stomach dropping $1500 on a U3014.
Got mine in today (multi-input version). Out of the box, the colors are over-saturated, at least mine is. The AG coating is pretty noticeable, on par with U3011.
Currently running my P9X79 WS with 32GB of "mix-matched" Corsair Vengeance DDR3-1600. It's actually three kits, two of the 3x4GB for X58 and one dual channel 2x4GB kit but they're all the same revision (Ver2.12) and ICs (Elpida J2108BCSE) so there's no compatibility issues. XMP settings are...
A bit late, but the BH12LS35 is a SATA drive. I have one. I'm interested in knowing the difference between it and the LS38 myself. My searching hasn't turned up much.
I'm having odd issues with 2x7K3000 3TB drives in RAID1 on ICH10R, lots of random system freezes and some full lockups. Upon doing a hard reboot I often get "SMART command failed" from the Intel AHCI BIOS screens. I had to use a modified BIOS for my board (Gigabyte X58A-UD9) to even be able to...
An i7 950 would be a good match for the X58A-UD3R, and if you have a Micro Center nearby (or have a friend/relative who does) you can snag one for $199+tax.
Anything with the fixed Elpida Hyper chips (MGH-E) would be nice paired with a R3E. The ones that had problems with failures were MNH-E, and even then it was only certain batches. A good deal on a nice kit would be these HyperX 2000 C8, or the aforementioned Super Talent 2000 C7 or 2200 C8...
6-8-6 really isn't very good timing. For DDR3-1600 I'd rather have 6-7-6 or 6-6-6. It's funny seeing all these PSC-based kits out now that have low CAS but tRCD timing is like 2 or 3 clocks slower, which kind of defeats the purpose. I'm glad I grabbed some Elpida Hyper kits like these.
It's asking a lot of the processor's memory controller to run 12GB at DDR3-2000. If you're going to run 12GB I'd suggest lowering the memory speed to DDR3-1600 and loosening the timings to something like 7-7-7 or 8-8-8. I'd set all voltages manually rather than using XMP profiles.
I bought a kit of those about a week before they dropped to $299  Still, it was a lot less than the $429 Corsair wants for its DDR3-2000 7-8-7 Dominator GT kit, with the same ICs.
At this point, with Elpida Hyper-based kits getting rarer and rarer, I'd suggest snapping up the cheapest one you can find. This Super Talent kit sure looks nice.
