Comcast Internet. All connections are going through a WRT54G linksys router and, like the title says, downloads/streaming video tend to stall after a couple megs of data are downloaded.
All speedtests run fine on wired and wireless. However streaming video will stall after a few seconds-few...
I recently got a USB external HD for the office which we'd like to back up to regularly. Currently I shared the drive on the host machine, and within the windows firewall opened up the relevant ports to a whitelist of only the IPs that will be connecting to the drive.
Also of note, our...
oh i have an old version of the install file for the drivers I currently have, but they're from october or something, so I figured now would be a good time to get the newest driver
Not sure if this is the right subforum, but here it goes:
So i'm about to reformat to get a clean slate on my system, and decided to set up a folder on my external HD of drivers/install files for everything i'll need to put on as soon as I re-install windows. Problem is, I can't get the 3850...
But if I go with a seperate enclosure it will actually be MORE expensive!
$109.99 for HD + ~$29.99 for enclosure
or $126.99 for the seagate external HD
I'm leaning towards the seagate right now...
So I've been trying to find a good external drive to do some backups of my work & home PCs. Nothing fancy, just USB 2.0 interface and 750GB-1TB or so.
This drive seems like a relatively good deal for a TB:

though i'm at...
You have to pick up the holotapes in the rotunda. They're immediately in front of you when you go up the metal ramp on top of some kind of filtration unit. You'll know you found the right ones when one of them is "journal entry 10".
I'm not sure if this is the right topic, but I figure it's as good a place as any.
So a family friend is visiting from France, and she wants to get an iPod for her boyfriend since they're much cheaper here. She's been visiting NYC a lot while visiting and found some "iPods" there (I have no...
OldBar Plugin can fix that, though the addons site is down currently...
http://lifehacker.com/396312/power-users-guide-to-firefox-3 has some nice tips on configuring firefox 3, including resizing the back button if you don't like that either.
The only difference between a headphone jack and a "line-out" is that there is usually some extra amplification added to headphone jacks (to drive headphones better).
Unless you're a hardcore audiophile (which would mean you'd want an external soundcard anyway) there should be no difference...
From last I heard on Engadget and Gizmodo (sorry can't find the link right now), It seems that they are allowing folks to sign another 2 year contract for an iphone regardless of whether or not they are currently in contract.
On top of that, I heard that the contract will restart from the new...
The problems you're listing sound like what I used to experience back when I played wow on a system with 512mb of ram. Seems strange through since you say he has 1.25G in there now. Is his hard drive chugging whenever he gets the low frame rate?
I decided to go ahead with a complet re-install, but i'm a little worried about the partition table...It seems the only way to install windows again is either install it overtop of my previous install or to delete the partition...won't deleting the partition erase my data?
hmm, I thought that was only possible doing a repair installation (i.e. this service pack 2 headache) but i guess I can try a full re-install without a format tomorrow and see how that works.
I know I need to do this, but I don't have access to another HDD to backup my data to for another couple weeks, so i'm just trying to get back to where I started right now...
I only have access to my laptop right now, which is unfortunately running ubuntu since it's unstable in windows (it's...
as a last resort before reformatting I decided to run a repair install to see if it would catch the halmacpi driver while rechecking my system configuration...much to my chagrin, it got halfway through then asked me to insert my "windows service pack 2 cd"...err yeah never got one of those...
Yeah that was the first thing I tried actually, and in never gave me a "Multiprocessor ACPI" install option
At this point I think I just hosed every driver on my PC just by choosing that "standard PC" setting so I'm thinking of just doing a complete reformat now...
EDIT: not only are all my...
when I choose to install the driver myself within the device manager, it only gives me the option of *.inf files...no way to choose the halmacpi.dll...
I tried choosing the "standard PC" driver hoping it could get to the ACPI driver after that...but upon reboot my screen resolution reset and my...
so by luck i actually got the right password after a few reboots and was able to manually change those files back to what they were...booting up normally now.
I'll try the manual driver update and see how that goes
geeze, my problems gaining momentum it seems...
I popped in my winxp disk and tried running the recovery mode...first prompt it gives me is for the administrator password....It doesn't recognize my user password and I can't remember ever setting a different password back when I fist installed...
Guess I got your message a minute too late...
I decided to follow the advice from here: http://www.planetamd64.com/lofiversion/index.php?t30279.html
and renamed my halmacpi.dll to hal.dll and rebooted
now the computer won't boot into windows. right after the bios splash it just reboots...
so I found a halmacpi.dll in my WINDOWS\Driver Cache\i386 folder and copied it over to system32 for kicks. Rebooted and nothing happened. Should this be renamed just to hal.dll to take effect?
I'm a little nervous just downloading a random dll and shoving into my system32 folder hoping it works...I decided to reinstall the XP hotfix since it fiddles with those drives (and I had installed it before upgrading) but it didn't help...after some searching I found some extra registry hacks...
So I just installed an opteron 180 to replace my aging single core 3700+, and i'm trying to get the second core detected. Installation went by without a hitch, but task manager and CPUZ each show only one core. Device manager has 2 "Opteron dual core" listings, but I can't see any evidence of...
How small is the cooler exactly? As tall as a dual slot cooler for that part of the board, or shorter?
Trying to figure out if this will fit in my shuttle.
I'm actually in the same boat, and will probably be picking up an X2 4200+ from newegg shortly, (along with an 8800GT or ATI 3870HD).
I think my current proc has 1MB L2 cache though, will I notice any difference in day to day tasks (web browsing, some math software for school) in dropping...
So while browsing online for upgrades I also stumbled upon this:

I didn't know Shuttle sold standalone PSU upgrades for their form factor, which seems really nice if I do run into power issues.
I guess in the end I may...
I'm currently debating on how to upgrade my shuttle SN25P (stats in sig) to keep it up to snuff for another couple of years. My main goals are to be able to get better gaming (at 1680x1050) as everything else seems to be just fine.
So far I'm thinking of a geforce 8600GTS, though i'm afraid...
A friend of mine just got an 8600 GTS:

only what was not listed in the spec sheet online was the fact that a 400w power supply is required. He's got a dell XPS 420 with a 375W PSU that he got about a year ago, and is afraid to...
What resolution were you gaming in before? On my 17" 1280x1024 screen I was able to game pretty nicely on an ATI x800xl which if I remember correctly should be on the same level as a 6800GT. Doing out the math, that's actually a higher amount of pixels (1.31 million) vs that 19"er res (1.296...
