I've looked around further on this and think I've found an answer to my own question :)
Reading the E5435 datasheet from Intel's website (http://www.intel.com/design/xeon/datashts/315569.htm), I found the following:
Hi,
I'm wondering if somebody here can answer a question that hopefully isn't too newbish! :)
I'm looking to buy a couple of Xeon E5435 CPUs for my Dell PowerEdge 1950.
Dabs is selling them here:
http://www.dabs.com/products/intel-xeon-e5345-active-4QPJ.html
It's the active cooling...
All's well that ends well - machine running as normal again, all components in. Very odd though, dunno what caused it in the first place.
Might well have been the loose motherboard. Have used larger screws so it's well anchored to the case now. Touch wood it won't happen again.
Thanks...
Thanks plasma but don't think that's the issue.
The core components are back in the case (bigger screws for mobo :-)) and i reconnected the power button and it's turning on and off just fine now. So that's v good news. I'm going to start adding one component at a time until hopefully...
enginurd you're my hero. Did as you advised and it powered on and posted.
Mobo, psu, video card and cpu are in working order so the issue is elsewhere.
It may well be something as simple as a broken power button on the case!
So next step - get it powering on inside the case?
Thanks...
Hi,
Hoping somebody can help me, I'm fairly desperate at this stage.
I have the rig as seen in my signature. It was turned on without any problems last night. Turned it off in the normal way, then this afternoon when I pressed the power button nothing happened. Literally nothing, as if...
I'll second that. Dell support is absolutely woeful. The number of hours I have wasted on the phone to them is not funny.
Dealing with Apple support has always been prompt and efficient (and not outsourced to India either!).
I'll be buying a MacBook Pro in the next couple of weeks, once...
Quick question - just wondering if it's possible to use DDR400 RAM in a motherboard that only supports DDR333?
The reason I ask is because I have a gig of OCZ memory and would like to use it in a new small form factor system. The motherboard in the barebones system I'm looking at only...
Just another note about my CPU - it's revision D, not E.
Could that be the reason for my problems? I read elsewhere Revision E chips go a long way to solving some of the memory issues.
Thanks for the replies. I'll probably end up waiting till the video card arrives before doing anything, don't want to go spending anymore money unless I have to - this upgrade is costing me enough.
sm8000, I presume the PCI card won't even fit in a PCI-E slot - direct form factor?
An odd question but I'm wondering if it's possible to use an old PCI video card (voodoo 2) on a PCI-E motherboard?
I ask because I'm upgrading my rig from AGP to PCI-E but won't be getting the video card until a few days after my new mobo arrives. I'm going to be reinstalling the OS so if I...
Hi,
I have 4 sticks of OCZ 512MB PC3200 Dual Channel Platinum Series. In my current rig (in my sig) the 4 sticks together don't work - system becomes unstable. I'm running with 2 sticks atm and no problems.
I'm upgrading to a PCI-E system with the following mobo:
Asus A8N-SLI Premium...
Wow, amazing this topic is still going strong. Over 100 pages and 250,000 views!!
Looks like the issues with the 2005 will never be resolved. Does the 2405 have similar backlight bleeding issues?
I upgraded from 1 to 2 gigs of RAM on my K8N Neo2 this week. It has not worked out well. I've got 4 sticks of 512meg OCZ 3200 Platinum Revision 2. The RAM was recognised fine, worked fine within Windows and I thought everything was rosey.
Then I was playing both GTA San Andreas and Unreal...
Also, just to add, I directly swapped the old 2 sticks of RAM with the new 2 sticks so there was only 1 gig installed and everything works fine. So the actual new DIMMS themselves don't seem faulty.
It just seems to be the combination of 4 DIMMS making up 2 gigs that is messing things up...
Thanks for the replies.
I removed the two new 512 sticks and all the problems are gone. UT and San Andreas run fine. So it's definitely the RAM that's causing the issue but I'm at a loss as to how to resolve it.
Here's what the MSI site says about RAM configs on the K8N Neo2...
Hi,
I upgraded my system's RAM on Friday from 1 gig to 2 gigs (I do a lot of heavy image editing) and since then I've had a few random crashes while playing certain games.
I had 1 gig of OCZ 3200 DDR400 Platinum Series on a MSI K8N Neo2 Platinum mobo and bought another 2 sticks of the same...
Getting a refurbished 2005FPW is pointless. Why would you want someone else's returned monitor? It was returned because there is something wrong with it and Dell are passing the problem on to you. Dell can't do anything to fix the monitors because the panel is manufactured by LG and the...
My ACD 20" doesn't show Post/Bios/Windows loading screen with my Sapphire 9800 Pro 128 meg.
Check this forum - http://discussions.info.apple.com/webx?14@808.wNqGa7CmMfd.0@.ef97391
There is a long topic in there somewhere where PC users have posted whether or not their video cards post on...
I've used both and based on what you've said I'd go for the Apple. It's a better screen than the Dell. As the other topic in this forum shows, backlighting is a massive problem with the Dell and dealing with their customer support to get replacements is just a nightmare. With the Apple it...
I did a google search for details on flashing the video card BIOS but nothing jumped out at me. TBH it's not something I've heard of before, motherboards yes, video cards no. I searched Sapphire's site and there's no mention of BIOS updates for the 9800 Pro.
I wouldn't be keen to experiment...
My 20" ACD arrived today and I thought it would be worthwhile posting a comparison between it and 2005FPW.
First off, you gotta hand it to Apple, they know how to design and present a product. The ACD is a beautiful piece of kit, lovely aluminium finish which makes the 2005 look positively...
This is funny!
Just watched the latest episode of 24, and guess what?
Look familiar?
Is that the 2001 or 2005?
And is that backlight I see in the top left corner! ;)
It takes around 3 hours or so for the monitor to display any major backlight leakage. My one looks great too when I turn it on for the first time each day but once it warms up that's when the problems start. Hopefully your unit is flawless as you say, a rare happy ending for a 2005FPW owner! :)
I've been running HL2 at 1680x1050 on the 2005FPW, all settings to high, no AA - it runs beautifully and looks gorgeous. My specs are in my sig. With my video card my rig is probably just a tad slower than yours.
Ramuman, your post is music to my ears. I ordered the ACD 20" today to replace my 2005FPW which I got last week and is going back for a refund. I was aware the panels are the same make and was a little worried I might run into the same backlighting problem (despite several ACD users saying...
I agree, it is overpriced and lacking in features. But it's the only alternative 20" widescreen out there.
Over here in Rip Off Ireland, the 2005FPW is usually 920 euro inc Tax before any discounts. At present there is 20% off which is why I got it but discount coupons are nowhere near as...
$399? wow! That's some deal. Sell the sucker on Ebay and make a nice profit! ;)
Just spent the last hour playing HL2 as well for the first time at 1680x1050. I was very surprised by the performance on my 9800 Pro 128meg. Was expecting a major drop in FPS but with all settings on high (no...
yeah i know the 2005 has more features over the ACD and is better value. Things like extra inputs, settings, PIP are all nice features but having used the 2005 for the last few days they aren't really features I can see myself using.
First and foremost i need a high quality picture and...
Well I've pretty much decided my course of action. The Dell 2005FPW is going back for a full refund and I'm gonna go for the 20" ACD. It's a couple of hundred euro more expensive but from what I've read on other sites it's a sweet monitor, not plagued by backlighting issues. I'm willing to...
You think this is acceptable for a $800 monitor?
Even if I hadn't known about backlight before getting the monitor, I would have noticed it almost immediately. How could you not - anything dark is affected. Going from a CRT, where black is black no matter where you look on the screen...
If you want my advice - don't bother. Look elsewhere for a monitor. Ok you won't find a 20" Widescreen at that price, but it's not worth playing the backlight & dead pixel lottery, the odds are stacked against you.
My one is going straight back for a refund early next week.
I know, I thought that was grounds for optimism when I first saw it. Maybe UK construction would be superior.....HA! Fat chance!
Thanks for the good wishes, I've got every crossable bit crossed.....
