Ok, I've encountered the booting problem again. This time, however, unplugging my optical drive did not solve the problem. In the process, however, I believe I have nailed down something interesting that might be causing or influencing the problem. Maybe someone will be able to help:
I...
What I did was use a different molex than the one I was using before. The one from before had a couple of fans and something the front I/O for the soundcard plugged into it. While the total draw on the PS should be the same, it'll be more evenly spread across connectors. Might make a...
Thanks to you I now have sound. From TV, from other media, etc. Seems to work all the way around. :) I really appreciate your help!! Still something curious, but something that's been from the very start. The controls on the ATI TV don't control the sound in any way. Thus the remote for...
My BIOS version is the original one, 1.00, and the newest is two revisions later, 1.03. I tried flashing with it, but I get a "Verify Error" and can't make it flash. I tried 1.02 instead, and get the same error. 1.01 is not available to use.
Any ideas on flashing the bios? I've found...
Should I uninstall the drivers and all the software for both the video and soundcard? And should I unplud them both and plug them back, or would that be unnecessary?
On the BT problem: No router, I've tried with the firewall off, and my ISP swears that they don't block or limit anything...
Thanks! I don't have the problem fixed, and I'm still at a loss. Now two more questions have arisen. One that I should have remembered before, another somewhat new problem.
First, (and this was a big problem in the past), sometimes my computer decides not to boot and I get a "insert system...
1: Hate to ask such a terribly n00b question, but how do verify the windows clock setting? As far as I remember when I set the computer up I set the correct time zone. But it makes sense now from the way you explain it that that could very well be the problem. If windows checked the clock...
whew, I got it!
I didn't have everything connected, namely on the accessory panel. Stupid me didn't even have the power on that part connected. Also figured out I did have room to connect the firewire on there after all, which is good.
So yeah, mods, feel free to delete...
Hi, I have an AIW 9600 and a Creative Audigy ZS2. Can someone please tell me the proper configuration to get sound from videos? If I hook the sound from the AIW dongle to the sound card (any of the connections), I get a popping static. Nothing else, ever. Sound works fine for music, or...
Yeah, I already got it all and put it together. I'm very happy with it. I got the ZALMAN CNPS7700-ALCU. Looks badass, and seems to be doing the job just fine.
Thanks for the help, though.
Ok, it's working! [Obviously] internet and everything. I'm really excited!
Now, on to business. Is there any trick to testing and making sure I have everything hooked up properly? I also want to make sure I have everything hooked up that needs to be hooked up so things that I should have...
I finally made the plunge with this computer.
intel Pentium 4 530J 800MHz FSB LGA 775 Processor
AOpen i865PEa-7IF Socket T (LGA 775) Intel 865PE ATX Intel Motherboard
ATI ALL-IN-WONDER 9600 100-714116 Video Card
ZALMAN CNPS7700-ALCU 120mm 2 Ball Cooling Fan

Another question.
My main goal with getting a MB that has firewire is to have a useable front panel on the case I have.
Is getting a firewire card that will supply headers for my case a viable option? Will the speeds be as good if I go that route? My thought process here is that I might...
This HS says it's compatable with Pentium-4 socket 478 3.2 GHz and above (and 775 with bracket). If I go the 478 route, I'll be getting a 3.0GHz. What's the difference in compatability?
Thanks!
What are the advantages of staying with 775 vs 478? Looks like I could easily find something to suit my requirements if I went for 478. Does it make much difference?
Yeah, but ouch on the cost for that one. Ouch!
Maybe I should aim for a lower video PCIe video card and a tv tuner? Would that be a good idea?
Or how about replacing the MB on my previous list with this board:

DFI...
What would my options be if I went with a board that didn't have an AGP slot? Are there any good video cards that have catv-in and the other stuff that the AIW has, that don't use AGP?
Can anyone recommend a board with the features of this one (namely, the requirements I've listed on this thread) that will actually be in stock anytime soon (at newegg)?
;) This board doesn't seem to be in stock, for a while.
Thanks!
I just updated the first post to reflect suggestion from this post. I don't especially like the idea of spending that much on the Zalman, but I found nothing else that seemed to be too great.
By the way, THANKS!!! for all your help, everyone!
Such as this: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.asp?item=N82E16820145579
But that looks like CAS3 also... Does newegg have Corsair VS CAS2.5?
Ah, now I see, newegg just doesn't seem to have packaged 2x1GB pieces at CAS2.5, which would be well outside my price range.
Ha, just when I'm about ready to make the move, the Abit board is out of stock.
I will go with the Abit that you suggested, however, and the processor, with the RAM and Videocard I listed. I'm still up in the air about the heatsink/fan, though.
How about the processor suggested by MrMitch? Also newegg didn't seem to list any P4 Socket 775 Northwood processors. So I'd guess I should just go with the one recommended?
Thanks! I need to look into ram more, but that's as high as my budget will allow. Should I possibly drop to 1GB and go...
I didn't have a socket preference when I picked my board, I just went with one that had the features I wanted. Looks like that board has the features I want as well (+1), so I have no problem going with that one, and it's less expensive to boot.
As for memory, is what I have sufficient...
I've posted here before, with parts I wanted to put in my computer. I've since changed all that around, and would like to get a re-critique of my parts. If someone has time on AIM, that'd be great too.
My purpose for the build is... I want something newer, faster processor, etc. I'm no...
As for the video card issue (that is, the board I mentioned doesn't have onboard video), how about if I just switch to a board that does? The main aspects I'd look for would be
+firewire header (for front connection)
+16x pci
+1x pci
+SATA
So the SOLTEK SL-915GPro-FGR should fit that...
what about the socket type? I originally configured what I'd buy to have a socket 478, but then realized I wanted to include pci-e x16, and so switched to the AG8 board. Does it make much difference? Technologically, which will "last longer". I've squeezed 5 years out of my current system...
I have done this, although my Dell was much older (from 2000, a 2400 model). Did it with no problems, all parts into a Cooler Master Praetorian. Works fine. Of course there's a lot of functionality in the Praetorian that is lost since the Dell board doesn't have all the connections, and the...
Thanks for your reply! Let me ask this: If the video card I'm currently looking at is AGP ( ATI AIW RADEON 9600 AIW), is there any reason for me to get this motherboard? I understand from my research that PCI Express x16 is the way to go now, but this computer will hopefully last me 5 years...
I have parts I'm happy with in my computer now, but the most important parts are too old. Here is what I'm looking at:
ABIT "AG8" i915P Chipset Motherboard for Intel LGA775 CPU link
Intel LGA 775 Pentium 4 530 3.0 GHz, 800MHz FSB, 1MB L2 Cache, HT link
Kingston ValueRAM Dual Channel...
