CCTV DVR and it's software program stops communicating

Glad you found the root cause! That was a tough one to diagnose.

    How much RAM you got?

ECC UDIMMs have always been more expensive than their ECC RDIMM counterparts, but I don't think it is because of manufacturing costs (as the RDIMMs have even more ICs on them than ECC UDIMMs), but more or less a supply and demand issue since in the used market ECC RDIMMs are everywhere vs ECC...

Yeah, but the pricing on them wasn't that great either.

    Newegg - Seagate Exos X20 20TB $279.99 + $1.99 shipping

The only thing about them is that they do this weird 'white label' and 'house brand' thing with the drives which is non-sense since there's only a few drive manufacturers in the world and no one OEMs their drives.

If the router has the mac of the old dvr stored, then yes. I would reboot the router (and the dvr) if you haven't.

Neat! I had no idea Dell made adapters like these--I can't read the Dell part number--what is it?

    How much RAM you got?

To me it seems if the visuals are worth it, people will find a way to spend for it. It still shocks me today that people will buy a video card that cost more than whole systems did back in the day, especially considering how many people are doing it because back in the day, no one had this type...

Anyone suggest file sync software for windows

First, I would still do a vpn--that's the only way to go. Second, rsync has been the standard for this for year. If you need windows, robocopy with the /mt:128 switch does pretty well, especially if you have SSDs on both ends.

    How much RAM you got?

Yeah, after seeing games from the DOS days gobble memory and more and more until today doesn't seem like this will ever end.

Are you using ECC with 64 GB+?

That's some good uptime for sure, but to see the difference in ecc and non-ecc, you really need to run both in the same environment until they crash on their own. This is where I saw the difference as a non-ecc consumer system stayed up for a few months, while a server with reg ecc ram ran over...

CCTV DVR and it's software program stops communicating

And you can't get another unit like the first one, so you'll need to start over for the second unit or have them swap it again if you're convinced it's bad.

    How much RAM you got?

Just run a stoopid amount of VMs and realize how little you really need all your other computers. :D I have enough servers to do this HA style, but haven't gotten around to it yet.

Are you using ECC with 64 GB+?

Except for ddr3 ecc reg, which is stupid cheap now--less than 20cents/gb if you're looking in the right place. Is it the fastest--no. But when you're looking at something that is memory bound and you can throw 512GB-768GB at it for $100-150, it might still be worth looking into.

CCTV DVR and it's software program stops communicating

Look, there's a potential problem with anything that changed. Hardware change=suspect, windows since it always changes=suspect. If you're convinced the hardware isn't the issue, it's the software. If you think the software isn't the issue, it's the hardware. It really all boils down to this...

Rebuild your win7 system and install the dvr software from scratch.

CCTV DVR and it's software program stops communicating

So if it's not the hardware and you think it's something that's new on the software, I guess the only thing left to do is rebuild it all from scratch. :(

CCTV DVR and it's software program stops communicating

I've rarely seen any company in the last 30 years that has the type of attention to detail to confirm firmware versions are the same--especially if it is an 'updated' product. More than likely there's something in the 'updated' product that changed that broke it all. So now you can continue...

My exos experience has been the same as my HGST/WD/Tosh. Not sure what's going on since I've still been buying them in various capacities and still nothing out of the ordinary like some are posting about here. But I do make sure I'm getting genuine product--possible fakes out there? Would be...

Yes! Micropolis 170mb ftw! Today you can fit 8x 16TB SSDs in the same space--128TB--literally 12 orders of magnitude increase in ~40 years.

Time to assemble a new router

ime if you're going to buy new, the price at a b2b retailer like CDW, Provantage, Connection, etc will have similar prices. If not, the ebay listing is fakes. Ebay is good for used ime, but you really have to look carefully. Back a few years ago when I was looking for some Intel PCI-X dual...

Time to assemble a new router

This is something I looked into extensively before deciding on proxmox. Mind you I haven't even set it up yet, but of all of them it fit the bill for what I needed especially since upgrades which cause problems aren't forced down your throat. Virtualizing at its core isn't trivial but it does...

Why I still like 1 Gb Ethernet over WiFi

That's the way it used to be, but I think it was in smb3.1 that added just a 'point to point' detection (or whatever it was called) that basically allowed all connections between two points to be used simultaneously. It was a thread here when I first saw it too where someone was surprised they...

Time to assemble a new router

So if you've got that type of hardware, I would look at virtualizing the router under proxmox and then having another windows vm that you rdp into. This way, you get to still use it as a PC for some stuff (knowing that if you take the system down you take the network down) as well as have a...

Nice. Yep, they are fast for HDDs, but that's expected in the data center so no surprise there. :) I have some externals like that too that had a usb cable issue that made them seem like they were dying. Changed the cable and they worked great.

    Newegg - Seagate Exos X20 20TB $279.99 + $1.99 shipping

How were they shipped? Sounds like classic shipping damage from insufficient packing and rough handling. I've even had this happen with RMA drives from manufacturers since they just send the box with the drive in it with that custom plastic shell on both ends. No one seems to understand that...
