Last time I had this number of drives fail was due to a faulty PSU. Problem ceased after replacing it. Bear this kind of thing if you continue to see failures post moving on from REDs.
Two VMs connected through the same vmware vSwitch shouldnt use the uplink at all so buying a new switch shoulnt be necessary to solve this problem. Once you are transferring out of the vSwitch, i.e say a router-on-a-stick type config where theres a router firewalling subnets, a better switch may...
I'm no expert but I just tried a quick iperf test between two VMs on my 6.5 install out of curiosity as Im pretty certain I read in the vmware host config book that VMs connected to a vSwitch weren't limited to 1gbps. These VMs are both Debian stretch, 1CPU, 1GB Ram with low utilisation on a...
I assumed it was people buying them in order to be able to resell their hardware after dispensing of the original packing materials. The cost on buying the empty box is should be recouped in a better sale price....
Trying to silence a server chassis is likely to give you yet more migraines! You might also find the Noctua's don't push enough air to cool the drives adequately in the bay's, look at the static pressure as well as the db measurements. Those cases are designed for high pressure fans for a reason.
my three UAP AC Pro's just showed up today rather unexpectedly. Wasn't expecting them until much later this year. Seems supply is improving. Ill get some perf data this weekend.
you'd be nuts to use RAIDz1 with disks that large, the chance of another failing during a rebuild is quite likely - unless your data is easily replaceable, i.e from your backup array you have off site. Given you can mitigate a high % of risk for a small sum ($150?) its not worth it IMHO. Go...
Further googling suggested I tried this ghetto mount with the old fan from the CPU cooler....dropped temps by 10 degrees to 45.5degC now. Still interested to hear if theres anything else I can do to improve upon this?
Recently upgraded my file server and am having some trouble with PCI card temps.
Its built an old cooler master Stacker case which has served me well for the last ten years and I wonder if its time to look to upgrade or if another fan in the right place could help?
The system is used in a...
Offering: The 1280Ml v 2.0 heatsink is 45mm x 45mm x 10mm, mounting holes 55mm apart.
Wanted: Summary of differences between version a, b & 2.0 (which mine is)....any ideas which is the latest and what changed between them all?
im pulling a 1280ml out in the next few days I can measure for you...assuming you have decent case airflow, why do you need to change the default heatsink - Im sure Areca will have specified it correctly?
I just checked mine with 18 1Tb drives connected its CPU @ 50degC.
This is my "old" media server. Dragged it out of storage and it powered up, luckily it verified ok...once I figured out I couldn't initiate a check from the HTML login via the onboard port of the Areca card, hat do to it from the BIOS login.
Anyway, I think I built this around 7 or 8 years ago...
Also make sure the drives had the 1.5GB/s jumpers removed (if present and appropriate). I missed one in my 16 drive array, probably when I had one fail and it seemed to affect performance although admittedly I didn't benchmark before after so can't say for sure.
Can I please just check with your experts that there are no outstanding issues with the 1680ix-24 and Seagate 1TB 333AS and 1TB 340AS drives before I place my order? I saw there was some middle of 09 but have they been cleared up now?
SD04 and SD15 firmware on the 340AS
SD15 and CC1F firmware on...
I just ran HD-tach out of interest on my array and it produced the following graph - is this normal? Any comments?
System: Q6600, Server2003, Areca 1231, 11*Seagate 1TB drives
I read all the great stiff about Intel Burn test being better than prime, got my system stable @ 100 passes of IBT but it BSOD with 30 minutes of prime95! Making my system stable under Prime is MUCH harder than IBT which might indicate a memory issue with what Im using (upgrade on its way!).
I...
theres some awesome game that are coming soon so if you trade it you are unlikely to play them.
Id keep it and I expect youll find time to game on it when something takes your fancy.
Sorry to hear abouty our loss. Its a shame Microsoft cant backup your saves on line somehow...that would be neat
the p6t seems to be capped at a ma rate of 12000kb/s from DVD - my old Gigabyte DQ6 used to hit 16000 i recall so ripping speeds are slower on the newer ICH10R chipset currently. Theres a thread i started over n xtremesystems about this already.
Hopefully a driver fix will allow us to get max...
yeah, I have a backup of all the documents, pictures and other odds and sods. I think I even have backup of the 1.5TB of FLAC'd audio files but what I dont have a backup of is the 5TB+ of DVD rips! It would **** me off to have to redo all them again.
I just dont really know whow to backup...
Dont you just love computers!? Every year at this time I take advantage of the time off work and upgrade a few components, ensure firmware's are up to date and generally make sure my systems are reliable and fully functioning.
On Tuesday the 23rd I ran a check on my Areca 1231ML 7TB RAID 5...
Thanks for keeping us informed, the new chipsets sound like a worthwhile upgrade.
Re perf hit with RAID6 - I would have expected the extra drives latency to have caused the slowdown, not the parity generation so maybe there is something more cleverer than I know going on under the hood of that...
tried the rest button, no joy.
Also tried connecting another device (printer) to the unit but no luck either so I guess it is busted.
Thx for your help guys
Ian
I found the compatibility thread here http://www.hardforum.com/showthread.php?t=1290494&highlight=apc
Sounds like the issue is with some PSU's other than the corsair ones, it sounds a bit techy but from what I can see and understand, the Corsair HX620 should work with this APC unit.
I...
Hey guys, thanks for the input.
Dan,yes I connected the battery, this is the only thing I could see would be a potential gotcha.
Michael, I installed the software, connected the USB lead and the unit reports everything is green, battery charged 100% and no power outages, everything looks as...
Hi guys,
I wanted to protect my server from power outages so purchased a APC RS1500 redundant power unit. http://www.apc.com/resource/include/techspec_index.cfm?base_sku=BR1500
Either Im really thick or the unit is DOA and I just want to confirm this is the case before I package it up to...
Hi guys,
I could do with some expert advice before embarking on expanding my RAID array.
Im using a Areca 1220 8 port RAID card with 5 * 500Gb disks configured in a RAID6 array, 3 data disks = 1.5TB plus 2 redundancy drives.
Option 1
Given I have 3 ports spare, I think I can just an...
