I've looked at the samson racks before but thought they were short depth for audio equiptment.....
On amazon.co.uk is says the depth is 15.9cm!!! Can you confirm the depth please as I'm looking for a nice cheap rack.
Thanks!
Thank you all so much for your input, its EXACTALY what i needed!!

Hi,
I'm pretty new to virtualisation but build a server in my garage which is going to be a test server and i want to install ESXi and run a few vm's.
Is ESXi free or just a free trial?
I then need to access my server from a laptop in my house, do i use VM Sphere for this? Is this also...
Bit of an update, ive realise that there is a coaxial ariel socket behind my TV in the living room that isnt being used. I'm hoping that the ariel socket is cabled up and "should" go to the loft.
If this is right, im going to look at removing the faceplate, tying cat5e cable to the coaxial...
Internet speed is only 3.5mb but the reason i want the extra speed/efficiency is for streaming media and running various services from different locations of the house/garage and dont want the bottle neck.
I dont mind spending cash if required and i'm now looking into the possibility of running...
Thanks for your reply babe.
My house is just over a year old and the mrs would outright refuse the suggestion of wiring cat5e/6 which is a shame as I've always wanted a wires house.
There are only really 2 runs which need to be sorted which are living room to bedroom and then to garage...
Thanks (babe!)
Here is a very rough map (will do a propper one when i get a bit more time)
OK, bit of a brief walkthrough. My router is a standard sky router which only has 10/100 ports, im looking to replace this with a router with gigabit ports and dual channel wireless.
The devices in the...
Hi, can anyone help me out with my network?
I have a home network setup which consists of hardware in my living room, bedroom and garage.
I'm looking for any pointers which would improve my network setup and im still learning so understand that my setup may not be setup very efficiently...
Just ordered this CPU cooler, looks like its perfect for Xeon's according to the reviews!
Intel STS100C Thermal Solution (Combo) for Xeon 5xxx Series (Socket 1366) Processors
Bit of an update.
I've decided to install this board in a 2U server case to give me extra room for a suitable heatsink/fan and also room for drives etc rather than a cramped 1u supermicro case as it would only fit 1 drive.
So, im now on the lookout for a reletavly quiet but decent cooling...
Hi guys,
I just got a great deal on a Supermicro X8STi motherboard (LGA 1366, DDR3 max 24GB) which i plan on using for a ESXi server.
I got this for £39.99 delivered but they also included a Quad Xeon E5530 and some thermal paste.
Now, im looking for a 1U heatsink/fan. I have saw some...
Still havent found the time to install the NIC and setup the ESXi box but i'll be doing that this weekend.
Also, just had a massive stroke of luck.....
I was selling some old cisco gear on ebay (only sold for like £35 collected for a bundle of routers and switches) and when the buyer...
Network card arrived today. I'll get it installed through the week and setup ESXi to try it out.
Just been looking at server racks and I came across "Samson" racks. They look pretty cheap and get decent reviews. I know they are for audio equiptment so full length server racks will hang out of...
Found out that the motherboard in my ESXi box had an upsupported 10/100 nic.
Just ordered an HP NC360T dual port gigabit pci-e network card. Got it for £20 delivered so will keep in line with my low cost setup.
I think I need baby steps first. I do like the sound of that but would like to fully setup my lab first and do some break/fix troubleshooting to get some hands on experience, then i'll look into the more indepth stuff.
Had a bit of free time today and linked up all my machines through the vigor UPS.
Went to install ESXi on my tower but it said it couldn't detect a compatible network card. There is a gigabit nic onboard but I assume it's not compatible with esxi? Can anyone recommend one? Would a dual or quad...
Yeah, that's the type of advice/projects I'm looking for. Although I was considering selling the super micro motherboard to get a bit of funds together to put in my upgrade fund for maybe some more memory or storage for my servers.
Got an arrangement with the wife that all purchases have to be...
Hi all, quite new year but thoroughly inspired by the networking section and my determination to learn about networking.
I'm really looking for a bit of help and advice on how I should setup my servers and some projects to run to help with learning.
Now i'll try to explain my setup...
Hi
I'm looking to build a cheap as possible ESXi box and wondering if my spare parts would do the job.
Now I know I would need a memory upgrade but is the rest ok?
Intel Xeon E5420 2.5Ghz Quad Core (Socket 771 but modded to fit 775)

Sorry, i dont think im explaing it very well.
I have a HP N40L which runs Server 2008 R2, i was going to install VMWare and install a Windows 7 VM on it and just plug my monitor into the N40L and use that VM as my new desktop pc but have the server stuff running in the backround. Or install...

Hi guys, pretty new here but i thought i would start a blog to show my plan for my server room/lab.
I'm basically building it with old hardware more for learning with hands on expereince than anything else.
I have been gathering freebies and cheap hardware together in an attempt to get a...
I have some angle brackets that will fastern the lower leg to the table below. Going to do that to each leg so it will be secure. As i say, its only going to be 3 tables high so no "leaning tower of servers" etc.
Quite a lot of the Ikea stuff is 19" wide, their product designer must be a...
That ikea lack rack in the picture is not mine, its taken from a website. I'm going to build one 3 tables high. bottom table for height, next up for servers then top one for switches etc. I wouldnt dare stack one 5 high like in that pic, not when i have a 3 year old who likes to know all about...
