In my experience the best Windows laptops have always been the upper echelon of noteboooks from the HP ZBook, Dell Precision and, to a lesser extent, the Lenovo Thinkpad P line. All are mobile workstations that with decent specs will cost from $3k to over $10K.
Well, Apple just today agreed to a $500 million penalty payout in court over deliberately slowing older phones without informing consumers, in violation of law.
Apple has been described as an anti-consumer company: they sell locked down hardware with few options to upgrade, not counting the...
HP ZBook 15 G6 or ZBook 17 G6. 5 drive bays in the 17 inch model for all of your storage. The computers have Dreamcolor options which are arguably some of the best screens in laptops. Mil spec build quality and come standard with 3 years business on-site technical support warranty.
In my little imagination I wish they could return to the wreck of the Enterprise-D, salvage it, refit it, and give Jean-Luc his ship to command again. The way the Enterprise D was totaled is a disgrace imo. That, and NEVER, EVER leave Riker in command of a starship.
I've been sitting on the fence since forever. My only VR experience is with Samsung's Gear VR on an old Note 4 phone. I have a computer that's VR-ready but something keeps holding me back from making a purchase. Can anyone guess when we'll reach "Ready Player One" level of immersion / reality...
According to the Manjaro install troubleshooter guide, if you switch to discrete graphics mode in BIOS the distro will install fine. Of course, I only read that after my install froze about 4 times in a row. If you want switchable graphics there are instructions to enable install but it looked...
Hey, 'System76' is the laptop retailer who bundles the OS with its laptops. They test the Ubuntu-flavored Pop OS with NVIDIAs latest Linux drivers and bundle it with the OS if the release tests stable. One can run either Intel or NVIDIA graphics from the 'power' GUI menu. Switching graphics...
Hey folks, if anyone is interested, Pop!_OS works right out of the box with Optimus-enabled laptops: I have it running on an HP ZBook. Just download the NVIDIA iso version for the Dell mentioned above.
Well my concern would be the keyboard and the screen flex-cable issues. The keyboard seems to be the most unreliable part: it is not whether if it will break, but when. The entire laptop top deck has to be replaced if that happens.
I went with an HP ZBook instead. No regrets. Good luck with...
I saw the movie. It was alright. Samuel Jackson was good, as usual. I loved 'Goose' the cat. Ben Mendelsohn was good. Brie Larson was not particularly good, although there were a few moments with her banter with Jackson that were nice. Captain Marvel is all powerful and doesn't grow at all in...
I bought the Topre Type Heaven and, while it is okay, it cannot compare to the Realforce Topre in feel, imo. I now use the Topre Realforce 87U which is the best keyboard I've tried.
I did own a Unicomp keyboard. It arrived with something rattling inside and the workmanship seemed a little...
I use this bag for 15" laptops. Currently 'unavailable' from Amazon.com, lol.

After hanging on to the Apple ecosystem for ten years I returned to Windows computers in 2012 (having used PCs prior to my Apple stint since 1990). The most jarring thing about Apple for me was allowing its professional software to suffer by virtue of no upgrades or outright discontinuation /...
omg: I have almost ten years of hand written research notes, patient notes, journals, you-name-it, filed in Onenote. Its search function that can read my handwriting scrawl is super. The last time I looked at Win 10 Onenote it didn't have a tenth of the desktop version's versatility and...
I just tried the Quadro 2000M from my Lenovo Thinkstation in the HP Z820 and it works fine. I normally have a GTX 1070 in the HP. Hope HP tech support gets things get sorted out for you.
That's weird. I have an HP Z820 and I've swapped a few cards on it. The HP workstations have 6-pin molex power cables. You will need a 6-pin to 8-pin adapter for NVIDiA GTX cards. Also, make sure your computer power supply has enough power to run the new cards. Other than that I'm a bit stumped...
We are the custodians of the planet. I wish we could do better. I find the caustic reaction to the science of it kind of strange, personally. I have people gulping down twenty tablets a day without question as to the science behind those tablets. People have a lot of trust in the science that...
Well according to the latest research games are good for you! Above 25 hours a week gaming seems to be the cut-off point where the cons of gaming outweigh the benefits though. This is an area of active research. They're using games to help people with mental disorders like depression...
This is about their laptops, I gather? Are their mobile workstations like this as well? I'm liking their new desktop workstation line compared to HP's. The build quality is very good.
When I went to work at one of Scotland's major hospitals I was appalled by the number of patients with COPD, restrictive lung disease, and lung cancer all ascribed to exposure to the burning of fossil fuels (coal). I don't know much about the coal industry, but from my narrow viewpoint of a...
Uh, guys: I tried out Windows File History yesterday again (the lure of freeness). Um, how do you know what it is doing? Crashplan has a little activity window, but File History doesn't. Well, after having a backup (presumably) running during the day I shut down the computer for the night. Lo...
Thanks for that link and for your thoughts. I don't really delete files by accident but crazy has been known to happen. I actually never thought about having Windows backup do it directly to OneDrive, lol! That would be great. Looks like I'll have to stick with Crashplan for now.
I have a OneDrive subscription but I dunno if I would describe it as a backup service. I mean, from what I understand, it syncs stuff mainly - like Dropbox. If I delete a document from a local OneDrive folder doesn't it sync that deletion everywhere? Crashplan keeps deleted files just in case...
