Depends.
Any Indilinx controller drives will have better write/sustained write speeds and comparable read speeds to the Intel drives. Intel does much better at random reads/writes, though, and generally has better IOPS performances. For the most part it won't matter, but check out some of the...
Managed to snag a retail X25-M for 248 after shipping :)
Still not as low as I would have liked, but hey, they had it in stock, and I don't know if waiting will do me any good for the short amount of time I have left. So I figured it was worth it.
Can't wait to start playing with it next week.
I've seen several bulk/supply sellers that offer the retail 80 GB for around $240 with free shipping, and the OEM version for about $5 less than that. Granted, they're all out of stock right now, but just have to keep checking on them.
Looks like I'll go ahead with an Intel 80GB G2 as soon as I can find a good deal. Problem is that it looks like most stores are experiencing stock shortages, so anywhere it is in stock has a higher price. Hopefully this will change as new shipments come in over the course of the month.
I'll check on that as soon as this current rebuild is finished (~20 hrs). Unfortunately I can't check the drive information while it's connected through the Intel RAID, so I'll need to remove them one by one and check on my other machine.
I currently have a 4x1.5TB RAID 5 setup off of the Intel ICH10R. I use it as a general media storage (avg filesize ~250 MB).
Ever since I put it together, I've been having random drive failings. While I have reason to suspect it may be the drives themselves (Seagates), the general activity...
Well, it's February. Another month and my Win 7 RC will start shutting down randomly. I'll be upgrading to the full version, of course, but rather than have to mess with a clean install twice, I'm looking into SSDs now so I can have everything working extra nice.
That said, I don't have the...
The OS will be going on a new SSD (when I get one), so that shouldn't be an issue.
If everything is stored with the mobo, then all is well. Just wanted to make sure everything would be fine before going ahead with it.
Alright, I currently have a RAID 5 array of 4x1.5TB on Windows 7 RC. I'm using Intel's matrix storage RAID controller that was included on my mobo. In light of the coming automatic shutdowns etc for using the RC, I'm planning to upgrade to the full version. However, MS prevents you from simply...
Hello,
I'm currently starting to look into the world of high-fidelity audio, but want to make sure that some of my bases are covered. I realize that most audio equipment is used to play directly from CDs since the waveform is perfectly preserved on them. However, the vast majority of my...
2. The receiver's main use would be as a source for a variety of other components, not meant for just audio use. Looking for multi-zone, some amount of upscaling ability (including legacy analog), and of course solid performance. My price range looks about right for those kinds of features, but...
I intend to move on to surround sound later on.
My immediate budget is actually something I'm not entirely sure of. I usually decide how much money I'm willing to put towards something after I've put in adequate research. At this point I've only decided on $500 +- $100 for the receiver, as...
Hello all,
Currently I'm trying to figure out how to go about my audio purchases. Namely, I'm trying to figure out what my priorities should be based off of what I'll be doing and where I'll be. I'm fairly new to much of the equipment in the better end of the audio spectrum, and this is also...
Ironically, since posting this I have not been able to reproduce the effect. Maybe it only starts to show up after extended use?
I have some decent headphones that I can try out after it starts happening again. I can also swap out the speakers to a different source, but that will also have to...
A simple MP3 player is no good; it simply doesn't have the capacity I'm looking for. Switching out the head unit presents its own problems, but more that I don't want to increase the clutter up front.
Part of the reason I'm trying to do things this way is for the challenge in it. I do have a...
Hello all,
I currently own a '99 Mercury Sable with a Clarion 6-disc CD changer installed. As much as I love to stick with CDs for my long trips, it can only ever be a fraction of my full library available at a time.
Thus, I'm trying to come up with my own way to set up a HDD player in...
Hello all,
My current audio setup is a Creative Audigy 4 Pro card hooked up through a Logitech X-540 speaker system in Vista. My primary uses for it involve music listening and watching movies, although I do game occasionally.
A while back, I noticed that certain parts of audio would gain...
Hello all,
I've spent the past few days looking over all manner of cooling related tests and comparisons, but I'm still at odds about what HSF to get... I've narrowed it mostly down to the Xigmatek Dark Knight and the Scythe Mugen 2. I haven't been able to find any reviews that compare them...
The snow is visible even with no devices hooked up. But for good measure, I tested all the remaining inputs and got the same result.
After a long time warming up the snow has decreased a fair bit, but it still is far from perfect. Even if it gets back to "normal" if I let it warm up for an...
I purchased an FHD2400 about a year and a half ago, and have been very pleased with it so far. Unfortunately, I left home for the weekend, and came back to find the screen full of snow (!). Colors are off, and everything looks pretty terrible. It's out of the warranty period now, so any repairs...

I actually got everything to start back up after an hour or two of cable switching and unplugging. All it seems like right now is that the computer only shows the above symptoms when I have my 500 GB Seagate EIDE drive plugged in via Molex. Whenever I disconnect it, everything starts as normal...
I left my main desktop on campus for thanksgiving break (doing some folding), and returned to find that it was off. It powers on for about 3-5 seconds now, but after that the entire system shuts off. I tried a variety of tests and other things to get it to work, but the results are the same...
I debated whether to post this here or in the mobo section, but I figured it would probably be better answered here.
For a long while I've been using SpeedFan to report temps etc, occasionally glancing at the values it puts out for the SMART readings on my drives. The only problem is that...
I recently started looking at tablets for mostly the same reasons as you described, and my search brought me to Gateway's latest offering, the C-142XL. In terms of performance, there really isn't anything else that quite competes in the tablet/convertible notebook realm. Specs at a glance (as of...
Actually, it's odd. On Gateway's website, the picture for the system is the same between the C-141X and C-142XL. But when I venture off to ebay, the pictured design is quite a bit different. I'm inclined to believe the ebay pics more since the fingerprint reader is clearly visible on the screen...
Looks like they've added an additional $100 off to the instant rebate, leaving a base price of $1099.
This will be my first tablet, so I'm not entirely sure of which pitfalls all tablets suffer from. My main concern (although it's still not a huge concern) is the battery life. How much time...
Be very careful when you look at any sort of lag comparison tests. The numbers will always be different depending on the type of resolution that it's scaling to. The numbers I show above are just for the 480i and 480p resolution, over the component connection. Since the monitor's native...
Guitar Hero 3 (and 2 etc...) feature a lag calibration test to configure the game for proper play on HDTVs. You're supposed to strum as you see a series of targets cross over a point on the screen. Based on when you strum and where the game currently believes the target is, it calibrates an...
I did some lag tests today over some of the lower resolutions. I basically used the Guitar Hero 3 lag calibration a number of times and found a rough average of the offset for different resolutions. It's not going to be completely accurate, but it should at least be somewhere in the ballpark of...
From the research I've done, no. There are some that come close, minus a few inputs or pivot or etc, but none that have all of the same features. Which is one of the reasons why I'm sticking with it.
The problem is that I need to use slow shutter for much of anything to show up. Taking them in a brightened room doesn't help either. I took a few more shots from a stable surface (last one was handheld) at varying shutter speeds. Still none that you can make out the details of the buttons, but...
Well, the backlight bleed is quite noticable now, even without a darkened room. I'm going to stick with it for a while though, at least until the end of this quarter. I have the feeling that if I went to try and exchange it, they'd be out of stock anyway... I'll give it some time for the...
Unpacked mine today, and loving it so far...
Quite a bit of backlight bleed, but no bad pixels. I'm debating whether the exchange trip would be worth the risk of getting some bad pixels, or both. It's a Sept. model, for those curious. It's only clearly visible on all-black screens, I can't...
HDMI cables carry audio signals by default as well, but with no sort of speakers, it has nothing to output to. If you want it to carry audio through the HDMI, get the optional speaker bar. Else, just have the audio output via a different connection, to whatever your current speaker/tv setup is.
I went out and bought it tonight, although BB wouldn't take the 10% off coupon, which is a shame. Hopefully they have a sale shortly and I can go back and price match to recover the difference, but still disappointing.
As for the monitor itself, I won't be able to check it out until Christmas...
