Are EPYC chips difficult to find?

I had a few VM farms at home that I used to use all the time; less so now (less need, more power at work to use, etc).

Are EPYC chips difficult to find?

Limited supplies, lots of demand (especially on the enterprise side right now), hard to find, etc. Unless you want the mega 64C beast. I can get those for MSRP... but that's one hell of an MSRP.

Who's making moves to get ready for the new release of cards?

Since I'm waiting for water blocks, I got a 2080TI last week (just arrived) to hold me over until the 3090 blocks are ready. That way I can pass the 1080 on to the wife. She'll get the 2080 then, the 1080 will move down another notch.

First time WCing in... 16 years? Help me get started - can you 'bypass' the GPU until later?

Reviews say it's Bitspower and a few other high-end parts; Anand really liked the quality, although they had some weird comments (refuted heavily on reddit) on the injection molding. Good pump too apparently.

Perfect; Corsair says it'll fit the LGA 1200 socket too. PMed. Now I need to track down a couple of additional fittings and some more tubing from them and I'm good to go (and coolant). I wondered what he was going to do with that system.

Yeah but a water lock for a GPU that I’m keeping for what, 4 months? That doesn’t seem smart. No one is producing the cards with existing blocks anymore it seems.

    $70 H370 ITX remains - EVGA Clearance Sale? on H370 ITX, Z370 Micro, Z370 FTW, Z370 Classified K - $70 to $100

Value if you can find a buyer. I don't see many selling or buying of them at all - thought about that instead of Z490 when I couldn't find processors, but no one is selling the things other than retail, and they ain't worth that.

I assumed I'd run a produced liquid - those are safer, no?

    GPU - diminishing returns reached

I just picked up a 2080TI FE on good deal from the forum here; my wife needs my 1080, so that was a good excuse. Still planning on the 3XXX though as I want to WC it, and not going to track down a block for a 2XXX this close to release. I figure I can sell the 2080TI for $600 in a few months.

First time WCing in... 16 years? Help me get started - can you 'bypass' the GPU until later?

Mostly because I want to. I haven't challenged myself with a build in years- I also haven't done an all-out build since the early 2000s either (Athlon 1200 + AMD 760 board with DDR). It's to make it quieter at the same power level (bigger fans; slower speeds), and then able to handle high...

Hold out for 10900k, grab 10700, or just go with a discounted 9900K?

Planning on dual 360mm rads at least, but I'm also planning on adding an RTX 3090 or whatever it ends up being too. Might go with a third Rad for that. I figure that 1080mm of radiator space should do the job. :p

I actually have a 10900k on the way!

Hell, you still can't easily find x570 boards - but plenty of AMD cpus out there. Vice versa, can't find intel CPUs worth a damn, but boards? On shelves everywhere.

I actually have a 10900k on the way!

Not quite sure what you mean by laggy? Xeons aren't precisely inefficient at the moment either, just not as many cores as EPYC but way better than they used to be (and since AMD has been missing from that space for so long, it takes time to move - unless that's what you meant by laggy)...

Picked up the 10700K. First K proc I found in stock, and it'll be just fine for what I want. Now I'm working out the WC details :)

First time doing WCing since a kit back in 2005 - was one of those cheap-ass thermaltake or whatever kits you buy from frys. Lasted me a year before it alged up and died. Anyway, doing it right this time as I have both time, space, and the energy to. System Specs: Z490 Aorus Master 10700K...

Graphics Card Autopsy - MSI 980 Ti "Golden Edition"

Bad build perhaps? Or I wonder if they went cheap for some reason... I can't imagine a slightly bigger cap is that much more expensive... I tend to trust your analysis.

Hold out for 10900k, grab 10700, or just go with a discounted 9900K?

Let me rephrase: I'm buying a pair of 1TB drives or 2TB drives for certain, since this is a gaming only system I won't need any more (the workstation and NAS have all the storage). Since the board (but not the CPU) is compatible with 4.0, but I'm considering upgrading to Rocket Lake in the...

6700K with a 512G 3.0, but I want to leave it in to pass that system on without modification to my wife to replace her bulldozer. I'll be buying new drives for certain, just trying to decide if it's worth investing in 4.0 for the future or if only 3.0 would work. Meh, given that I don't...

Hold out for 10900k, grab 10700, or just go with a discounted 9900K?

Snagged (supposedly) a 10700k. :) Ordered the aorus master with it; now shopping for cooling (think I want the EK AIO). Going to go for as high an overclock as I can. Question - with PCIE 3.0 support only in this gen; will a PCIE 4 NVME drive work for now until rocket lake comes out?

MSI X570 Tomahawk review: possibly the best $200 X570

Prestige x570 Creator is top on my list I think, followed by the Ace, and then the Crosshair from ASUS. I don't trust Gigabyte with AMD boards - too much bad luck (love their GPUs and Intel boards though).

MSI X570 Tomahawk review: possibly the best $200 X570

Unless you’re on the edge of the prosumer space. I’m planning on running 3-4 NVMe drives, gpu, sata SSDs, etc. I’m right on the edge between X570 and jumping to thread ripper

Hold out for 10900k, grab 10700, or just go with a discounted 9900K?

I'd go Z490 just because at some point that's more future proof - if Rocket Lake/etc is worth it, I might upgrade - or at least it's a better board for future uses (if I turn it into a server/etc) :) And this is why I'm looking at the 10700. If I've got to build one, might as well be current...

Hold out for 10900k, grab 10700, or just go with a discounted 9900K?

This is also true. The only reason I'm really looking at Intel is because I want to keep ~one~ intel system around for my use (I do sometimes need to actually do cross-architecture stuff), and since they're best at gaming, I'll make it the gaming machine.

Hold out for 10900k, grab 10700, or just go with a discounted 9900K?

So good results? Microcenter got the good Z390 board back in stock, but I'm still torn on things. 10700 would be a decent bump up for me, and last till whatever comes next - while my 6700K would be a MASSIVE gain from my wife's FX-8350 for VR (what she uses it for). And the 1080 is a jump...

Hold out for 10900k, grab 10700, or just go with a discounted 9900K?

I'd argue that the drastic increase in core counts, better IMC, PCIE 4.0, etc make the Zen2 architecture pretty significant - although a lot of that (especially the PCIE stuff) doesn't matter as much when you're on desktop, like I said. Then again, I just shipped systems with 20 NVMe drives and...

Hold out for 10900k, grab 10700, or just go with a discounted 9900K?

Clockspeed isn't a jump, at least to me. That's just... well, meh. We've played that game over and over again throughout the years. Let me know when we hit 10Ghz and I'll pay attention; if ever. Nehalem and Westmere were a massive jump in architecture; at least from what they enabled -...

Hold out for 10900k, grab 10700, or just go with a discounted 9900K?

That's why I'm still debating between TR and 3950X for my workstation. I can use the cores, but debating if it makes enough for that. This is gaming though. Those are minor improvements when compared to the major jumps AMD made in the same timeframe. That's the issue. One side is coming up...

    GPU - diminishing returns reached

Alternative suggestion: Optimization for new hardware takes time too - so they're finding more things that they can do on the 2XXX that they couldn't on the 1XXX, and the 1000-series is already had most of its optimizations. (Also, the game devs have more time to find tricks/things they can do...

Still on my GTX 1080 for this; waiting on 3090, will upgrade to that. 1440P G-sync at 144hz is fine on a 1080 right now.
