I want to make a little ESXi sandbox. I already have a storage machine, and have all the parts except the chassis to make this new one:
X10SAE
M1015
I don't Need to use the M1015, but I wouldn't mind, if it fit. SATA should be fine too.
Any problems with a

I got a ignorant question.
What windows tool/dialog can I use to set permissions on a share/folder? I can't figure out how to connect/mount as (solaris user) root. I don't remember how I did it before. I don't think I ever set up an id map.
Storage server connected to AD domain.

I had built a little 2 way mirror datastore on 4 old 350GB spinning disks, and it's working fine (maybe a little sluggish sometimes). But one of the drives just failed and it's time to replace.
I'll probably just get 4 x 256G 840 pros because I know they work. But just wanted to check if...
Just got an SAE today and realized it wouldn't boot, at least I couldn't get it to, without a graphics card (using a xeon). I guess there's no IPMI either?
A corsair RM650 fits in the bracket in the front corner, but the fan would be right up against lid of the case. And the AC port is on the wrong side (toward front of case). Is this just a silly case, or can I find a better supply?
here's one with the supply sitting in it
I'm syncing to a service that only allows ssh/rsync
They use zfs, but zfs recv on their end isn't ready yet
I can't win this month
Can you figure out how to make duplicity work on OmniOS?
So I switched over to Gea's latest OmniOS VM. I can shutdown/reboot without a kernel panic.
BUT I'm still getting random panics. I have a thread going on the Illumos list trying to figure out what's going on.
How do you get OmniOS to shutdown (from vmware tools)?
Mine always ends up at the grub screen and then counts down and reboots.
edit
I kind of suspect my kernel panics* are esxi5.1 vmware tools related... How is OmniOS on 5.5?
I'm on esxi5.1 Update 1. I can't see anything in the two patches...
My SMB users are getting temporary hiccups. Windows complains that the mapped network drive is no longer available and then if we wait a minute or two and don't touch anything, it comes back.
Is there a common cause for this? I'm not having any luck with google. I can see a CPU spike in vsphere...
I'm having CPU spikes on my all-in-one that temporarily kicks people off the SMB share.
OmniOS is on a SATA datastore and then sharing out two pools. One for a few VMs and one for SMB for users to work on.
I installed Zabbix on a VM and I think it actually that VM that is spiking the CPU...
16 bays.
6 x 4TB RaidZ2 + spare + 256 samsung 840 pro for cache.
not sure what i'm going to do with the other 8 bays. made a two way mirror from 4 old drives and VMs seem to run fine off that pool, but I should put in some SSDs instead. I have zfs sync disabled on the little VM pool...
Can I team network interfaces easily from free version of esxi? I have cheap HP switches, but they do support LACP. All the vmware documentation I can find talks about a networking option I don't have.
edit: never mind. I can do IP hash load balance and non-LACP trunk in my switch. I'm afraid...
I've been running a 6 SATA disk ZFS system off a Jetway Atom board... and it's time to graduate to real gear now
I'm looking to base a sytem off the SC836A-R1200B chassis and X9SCL+-F motherboard.
The whole HBA/SAS/Expander thing is still confusing to me, so I want to ask
With this case's...
I got a new WD15EARS and it still couldn't replace. Still says different sector sizes.
I am on 151a7 now. Maybe I shouldn't have done that first?
Any way to fix?
Here's the one error I can find that might be related

I recently finished sending a snapshot of my pool to another box, but now I want to use napp-it replication. Is there a way to rename the snapshot so I don't have to resend everything when I first turn on replication?
I sent nas1:tank/work@daily to nas2:tank/work@daily
Having trouble replacing a drive...
A year or two ago, I built a RAID-Z2 with 5 WD15EARS. One of them recently faulted, so I bought a WD15EZRX and tried a zpool replace. It said "devices have different sector alignment"
I started searching around and tried everything I could find. Can't get...
I just got finished setting up static IPs (and aggregates!) on two IO machines (see my post about 3 posts back). Just follow the OI wiki. One thing that didn't seem to work like it says is the edit /etc/defaultrouter part. I had to use route -p add default. Make sure the disable nwam or it acts...
The root drive on my backup NAS died. I have another ZFS NAS running and it has copies of the rootsnaps of the dead disk. Can I restore the snapshot to a new disk over external USB from the working NAS and then install it into the busted machine?
Doesn't that board only take 4GB RAM?
The one thing I don't like about the JetWay Atom board I used for my ZFS thing is not enough ram and not ECC ram.
I don't understand backplanes...
If I get an SC836A-R1200 case, and put an IBM 1015 in there then I can just connect card to backplane with two SFF-8087 and I can use all 16 bays (as SATA) ?
There wouldn't be any Expanding going on right?
Would all the status lights still work (using SATA...
Ugh, for some reason Domain\Administrator doesn't work. I finally noticed the User "NAS" that I had put in AD a long time ago and used it to join at of course it worked the first try.
OK. I tried all that and every other possible variation. Here's the output in napp-it
Try to join domain :
step 1: Timesync with ad-server 192.168.1.221: 10 Apr 18:55:17 ntpdate[7245]: no server suitable for synchronization found
step 2: set dns entry in /etc/resolv.conf:
step 3: set...
so, I built 2 new domain controllers and demoted the old one and now one of my napp-its won't join.
I deleteded it fomr AD.
Maybe I can't type the right things into napp-it AD menu. Any guesses. All ADs now are 2008 R2. One thing I notice is it says. "No server suitable for synchronization...
