I'm looking into VR for Half Life: Alyx. I don't have Facebook but can create a throw-away account if needed for the Oculus Rift S (where I'm leaning) or the Link. Reviews say Valve Index is best for HL:A but screw the pricing and eBay gouging. May wait for Reverb G2.
So looks like ADT customers are getting Nest hardware for new installs. As a current ADT customer I'm cautious. The moment they try to force Nest hardware or link my ADT to my Google account I'm gutting the hardware and cancelling services.
Google invests $450 million in ADT, gets exclusive...
I initially didn't install the GPU cooler correctly and had hard shutdowns when GPU folding (hitting 90C) had to stop for a while. Finally got some Grizzly thermal paste and some aluminum heatsinks and reassembled, fodling quite nicely now. At 58C under GPU load now and stable. The orientation...
Noticed Boinc wasn't running after checking on it today, who knows how many days I was off (hopefully no more than a few). A lesson in checking in on your folding rig! Been busy with work and house projects, I usually check daily. :/
Anyone else get a check from the AMD class action lawsuit for the FX series CPUs? Coworker and I got ours in the mail. A whopping $34 for buying a 8320 (still have it on shelf) back in 2012, 2013 maybe.
Update: Installed everything and wow, this case is quiet! I hear a low hum at most. CPU temp dropped also, average was 75C now low 60C range on folding load.
Unfortunately I must have messed up the GPU install since F@H causes a hard shut down doing GPU folding. Running Unigine benchmark puts my...
Getting back into this for the first time in years has prompted some upgrades to deal with cooling and noise:
be quiet! DARK BASE 900 case
be quiet! DARK ROCK 4 CPU cooler
Arctic Accelero Twin Turbo III cooler for the GTX 1070
Doing Rosetta when F@H doesn't have work units available, trying to...
I burned through some F@H CPU/GPU work units and am doing Rosetta while F@H is idle. I've been getting Coronavirus WUs, just depends on what is available. You could technically do both if you really want to strain your computer. I had F@H running at the same time as BOINC with BOINC throttled.
Throwing in my rig for BOINC plus F@H with the recommended config file. Have BOINC at 70% CPU utilization. CPU at 73F max with stock cooler, will keep an eye on it. I think I need a new case with some sound dampening as the Corsair 200R is bloody loud. Work from home will be interesting with the...
If this is better suited for the VR forum it can certainly be moved.
I have a buddy who is going to buy an Oculus Quest and wants a computer to do VR gaming. He is not tech savvy at all and just wants a shovel-ready computer to play VR games.
He was looking at the following computer at Best...
I griped about losing headphone jacks until I got a Samsung Galaxy S9 and paired it with the Sony WH1000XM3 over LDAC. Mathematically I understand its not "Hi-Def" but to my ears its golden and I don't need any better.
Have an 8320 + GTX 970 for my gaming rig. PubG at 1080 and all graphics settings set to performance settings net me 60-90fps consistently. My old 22" monitor is at 1280x1024 just to get 75hz. Its playable. I have never tried gaming on 144hz so I don't know what I'm missing. This will have to...
Assembled the rig today. Only have cable management left to do (wanted to wait until I verified it boots). I somehow am short a SATA cable for the optical drive so I get to figure out how to order only one SATA cable without going out of the way to MicroCenter (a good 30+ minutes for me).
This...
I am selling my well loved LG V20 (Verizon) with 2 OEM fast chargers, fully enclosed case that kept it in great shape, and arm band. I am glad to answer any questions. $127.

Thanks for the feedback. I'll drop by MC today for the CPU/Mobo combo in addition to the case (don't want a damaged case arriving.) I'll go through Newegg or even Amazon for the rest (signed up for the 90 day free Prime offer with AMEX).
EDIT: Newegg will ship to a Fedex facility. Orders placed!
Here's a quick build I cranked out with the local MicroCenter.

I posted about this probably last year but now its time to do the damn thing.
The old man is looking for a rig to work on family home videos. He will probably have VHS already converted to digital, just playing with videos and exporting to a polished video.
1) What will you be doing with this...
Thanks for the feedback folks. I'll work on overclocking this guy. I've been saving my pennies so maybe I'll jump on a new build around Black Friday/Cyber Monday time.
I grabbed Battlefield I for $10 so I'll see how this behaves on my rig.
EDIT: Already have a Hyper 212+ for cooling so...
This is what I have for RAM. Never got into overclocking, not sure if this RAM can be tweaked or if swapping it out would be better. I can drop this stick into my Hyper-V rig and juice that to 32GB.
I have two FX rigs, one is my current gaming rig and the other I use for a Hyper-V test rig. See below for specs:
Gaming: Gigabyte 990FXA-UD3 | AMD FX 8320 | 8GB G-Skill RAM | GTX 970 | EVGA 750w PSU
Hyper-V: Gigabyte 990FXA-UD3 Ultra | AMD FX 8320e | 24GB G-Skill RAM | Nvidia GeForce GT 710 |...
Heading out of town for Christmas, will leave my AMD rigs running. Laptop is coming with me and will be hit or miss for being online.
Merry C[H]ristmas folks!
From what I recall hearing about how the Air Force managed email systems this may be a good thing. They suffered the usual PST sprawl due to tiny mailbox limits.
I've supported various iterations of the Surface product, from RT to Surface to Surface Pro. I like them but would hate to have issues after the warranty is up. If a screen cracks after the warranty the best you can do is take it to the Microsoft store for credit towards a new one, which is less...
For the folks complaining that a Raspberry Pie won't run PS1 or N64 games well this may be a good alternative. Retropie should run on PC hardware from what I've read.
I tweaked the budget and threw together a Ryzen build to see if I could generate discussion.
