Best NAS for a good price?

I'm a Synology advocate. I have a couple of the RS815. I use it as a NVR with my Hikvision IP Cameras too.

This broke my printer and Sonos, so i'll be switching it back.

Which would you recommend, UBNT or Cisco?

Getting on really well with my Unifi Switchs. You may want to swap your ERX for a USG though so you can see your APs, Switch and Gateway all under one controller.

    IP Camera DVR Software

There was a thread about this a while back you may wish to search for. I ended up going with Synology Surveillance Station. My favourite by far was the Ubiquiti software, but it only supports the ubnt cameras which weren't up to scratch (and a bit pricey/hard to acquire... at least in the UK).

Bingo. There are a bunch of Cat5e around the house (mostly used for cameras and phones), 8 speaker cables for the 7.1 system, a couple of fibre runs currently not connected and a couple of coax runs from the satellite also not currently connected. The cabinet now has sides and glass door on...

Hackers Gaining Access to a Home PC

Well technically, whilst they can't do anything while you're disconnected, there could be something (say a key-logger for example) running/capturing while you're offline which they can then retrieve if/when you plug back in.

    Best software for IP cameras?

I looked into this recently and was pretty disappointed by the lot. The Ubiquiti Unifi Video software is great but will only work with their cameras as far as i'm aware. I ended up settling on Synology Surveillance Station. It's not free and requires Synology hardware to run too, but I...

Flawless. Relatively quiet, low power consumption, nice interface (shame you do need the controller running on another device though). As an alternative you could go for the Edgeswitch, which has the builtin interface. I'm using Unifi APs too, so need the controller for those anyway.

    New build ideas

I went down the 10gbe + shared storage (synology rs3614rpxs) route and regretted it, The servers, NICs, NAS & switch were expensive, big, heavy, noisy and power hungry (and performance wasn't near that of local storage). I've now gone with a couple of incredibly low power supermicro shallow...

    48 Port Gigabit Switch Recommendations?

Finally got round to taking the network down to rewire the comms cabinet and ran the ubiquiti unifi switch 24 with nothing connected; it idles at about 25W. When it boots it's only using about 17, which seems weird, most devices spike whilst booting. Still debating ordering the 48port model...

    48 Port Gigabit Switch Recommendations?

I need to recheck the figures, but think my NAS idles around 20W now and ESX hosts about 35W so ideally i'd be looking for less but that sounds a little optimistic... I just found a post saying the Ubiquiti EdgeSwitch ES-48-750W idles at about 44W. I have a Unifi Switch 24 at the moment but...

    48 Port Gigabit Switch Recommendations?

I'm in the market too. Do you need POE? What are you most interested in? Performance? Interface? (UI/CLI) Power Consumption? Price? Noise? I've got a Ubiquiti Unifi Switch 24port 250W and tempted to go the obvious step to 48port 500W...

Your home ESX server lab hardware specs?

    Suggest me a new router

I've deployed the ERL at a few client sites with notoriously flaky power and staff who are rather careless (accidentally unplug etc) and never had an issue. Clearly, i would always recommend an elegant shutdown, but alas, no issues to date.

    10GBE question on cabling

I originally went for the XS708E- and instantly regretted it (lack of ports, poor/lack of web interface/cli/featureset). Then stepped up to a dell 8024 (24port for about twice the price of the netgear) and find it a lot better! However... that being said, wish i'd gone for fiber or infiniband.

    Ubnt wired PoE network cameras

I've got the "fake" or chinese hikvisions and have no issue with them. My old Airvision UBNT cams are supported by synology but fairly sure the UVC new ones aren't? I prersonally never had any issues with the NVR software and thought it was much better than any others i've used (the main 2...

    Ubnt wired PoE network cameras

I bought a 3-pack of those new UVC bullets and the new UVC domes. A bit disappointed to be honest, I ended up "upgrading" to Hikvision. They are a little overpriced for just 720p BUT the NVR software is brilliant, beats every other piece of software i've tried hands down (and recently i've...

1 release a year isn't exactly "active" but I guess dead wasn't strictly accurate I may give it a try at some point. I actually had a response from synology regarding the CPU bugs and have managed to improve things a little by changing the resolution for live view but still not overly happy.
