Well if its not confirmed by Nvidia, you can't really say that there is definitely going to be one can you now ;) Why would they make one though? its doesn't fill any real gaps. Nvidia has already answered the problem of the HD4850 tearing into its mid-range with the 9800GTX+

Less heat? This is the HD 4850 were talking about :). Thats one of the reasons I'm looking at the Saphire Toxic edition it has a zalman cooler that puts the temps down to like 40 idle 60 load, instead of the 70-80 idle 90 load horror story's lol :)

Short answer; there isn't one. Yet. Long answer; you probably mean the 9800GTX or GTX+, these cards do carry an increase in performance, and can be had for £130 ($260).

Don't bother with Crossfire, just upgrade the single GPU. Crossfire doesn't scale well. I don't think its worth the hassle unless you can sell the 8800GTX for enough to make it a cheap upgrade.

Why not just go for a different brand of monitor? or lose a few inches and get a 931BW instead! You don't have to waste your lives arguing with Samsung or complaining about the various build types of the 226bw or whatever. Just get a fast LCD and play Crysis!

I have a 7900gs too they do overclock well (I have mine at 590mhz core and 1500mhz memory runs any thing I can throw at it at full GFX), a GS is cheap and if your into OCing its quite rewarding.
