An external usb dac is generally the way to go for high resolution audio. Optical can't keep up with usb bitrate wise and most well measuring and affordable external dacs use usb.

If you can find an evga card, you can get in the step up queue while you wait. There have been some evga 1660 cards around $350 that aren't too hard to come by.

I have warrantied items from asus without proof of purchase. Their terms state that they base it on date of manufacture using serial number. I am surprised you were not able to push the warranty through based on that.
