Voice Assistants Dying, Alexa $10 Billion Loss Expected in 2022

I can’t imagine ever wanting that. It would wait till I’m in the middle of a zoom meeting with my boss and then kick in with a tapestry of obscenity.

Mowing over high PPD folders from yesteryear

Now that I think about it, While folding, just set the power limit to 50 watts less than what you’re running now. You’ll save power (and money!) and still get more ppd. Truely win, win, win best all of worlds.

You need a new gpu for gaming? Best of both worlds - best gaming, highest folding points per watt. How can you say no?!?

Intel Finalizes 'Intel on Demand' Pay-As-You-Go Mechanism for CPUs

from a consumer perspective, I look forward to the next generation of “pencil trick”. Buy the 15300, pop the top off, use a pencil to connect a few bridges and “hello 15900k”

    Paypal Changes?

It’s free and fast for me to sling money around in PayPal, so I’m not sure where I would get improvement beyond another service paying me to use it.

Crypto Miners, Not Gamers, Were The Primary Buyers of Graphics Cards Since 2021, Almost $15 Billion Worth of GPU Sales Reported

Can’t say I give a damn about the monetization models. The spreadsheet, backed by repeatable test conditions and reasonable setup, is the important part and the rest is generally fluff. I pay consumer reports for this kind of data, and I’d easily pay double that for [H] content again.

    Paypal Changes?

I use it a ton. It is drastically more convenient to use a single payment system instead of having to deal with PayPal + Venmo + Zelle + whatever crappy system you want to use today. If someone wants money from me for something like buying the t-ball coach a present / whatever, they better take...

Apples M2 looks like a beast.

My wife has been using the same macbook air since 2011, and I was watching her use it last week and said "that is just painful to watch, lets upgrade you". The M2 air release times perfectly, and I'll be getting one.

AMD announces Ryzen 7000 Zen 4 CPUs

For personal use it is fine - it’s a NAS after all. Enterprise is using SAN onprem with a comprehensive backup strategy and cross region replication in the cloud.

AMD announces Ryzen 7000 Zen 4 CPUs

It’s not just a from a workstation perspective, though that is part of it. I assert that the most edge case possible is the person that uses ALL the integrated options that come with these boards AND are content with the fact they are basically the lowest end options. For example - what % of...

AMD announces Ryzen 7000 Zen 4 CPUs

Let’s go through your list: GPU - checks out. USB - I believe I left a qualifier in there for 2-4 USB ports. If not, I’ll give you 4 ports being useful for being integrated so you have keyboard, mouse, 1 port for a USB hub, and 1 spare. The hub can easily be moved from system to system over...

AMD announces Ryzen 7000 Zen 4 CPUs

If you just want off site storage, put a box in the remote location and copy via VPN? ( that’s what I do, backup to my parents house). Alternatively, use any one of the cloud storage services? As for the durability of writable optical media, basically every one I made circa 2005 that I used...

AMD announces Ryzen 7000 Zen 4 CPUs

FPU, Cache, DRam controller, and related items are genuinely useful and improve performance. Integrated junk audio, Realtek lan, obsolete storage tech, low end iGPU, and related items are a different ball of wax.

AMD announces Ryzen 7000 Zen 4 CPUs

Uhh, did you not read the post? I called out NAS as a SATA option, and it’s best done via expansion card.

AMD announces Ryzen 7000 Zen 4 CPUs

It’s called a NAS. One machine in the house - ideal use case for a SATA expansion card

AMD announces Ryzen 7000 Zen 4 CPUs

I already have a X080 card in my system anyway, and fully support offloading to those when it makes sense. For example, I run folding @home on my GPU because it’s way more efficient than running it on CPU.

AMD announces Ryzen 7000 Zen 4 CPUs

I haven’t used SATA in most of my systems for years now — The only system that has SATA drives is my freenas. I put exclusively NVME in everything else, so sata gets disabled and has become dead transistors. It wouldn’t bother me in the slightest to have to buy a SATA controller for my NAS, or...

I mean, that link WAS to power tweaking raspberry pis, and it was doing the same basic thing that I'm talking about here - getting rid of the junk. Disable as much of the iGPU as possible. Turn off the LEDs. Reduce networking to 100mbit. Etc. The issue with the rasppberry pis (as well as...

AMD announces Ryzen 7000 Zen 4 CPUs

Yes. I power limit my 5950s via eco mode, power limit my videocards via nvidia smi, and disable as much of the junk that comes with motherboards as possible. Points per watt is the key performance measurement when you're running distributed computing 24x7x365.

AMD announces Ryzen 7000 Zen 4 CPUs

I would say it’s detrimental if it uses any power when I have a discreet card installed. Again: It’s a feature I’ll literally never use. It’s dead transistor space *at best *. At worst, it’s dead transistor space that uses power and increases heat. Nearly any other use for that transistor...

AMD announces Ryzen 7000 Zen 4 CPUs

It’s a feature I’ll literally never use, and I’ll disable as far as possible to save power. I’m simply going to pair a high end processor with a high end video card. Hopefully this new iGPU is on its own power plane so it can be completely powered down. Given my best possible case scenario...

AMD announces Ryzen 7000 Zen 4 CPUs

Welcome to why I’ve had a GeForce 710 for years. One GPU I can move around as necessary but generally hangs out in the box not drawing idle power and not wasting transistors on my CPU. The extra die space on the CPU could, if nothing else, be better used for cache.
  27. E

AMD announces Ryzen 7000 Zen 4 CPUs

Good god why? If I wanted integrated video, I’d buy an APU. Take those same transistors and, if nothing else, make them cache. I hate buying junk I have to turn off, and an iGPU is junk I have to turn off.

AMD Announces Ryzen Threadripper Pro 5000 WX-Series: Zen 3 For OEM Workstations

I definitely preferred the release cadence back around the i7 920 days. The prosumer / HEDT part comes first, then the high to mid desktop stuff, then the low end. I’m not sure when it changed, but I have 0 interest buying HEDT 3-6 months before the new generation high end consumer comes out...

$199 Totaltech Paywall Helps Scalper Snag 20+ GPUs From Best Buy

The catch is that there is a RoI on these for miners. It doesn’t matter what the actually cost of the card is when you’re using it to make money - all that matters is how long it takes to recover the purchase price and start turning a profit.

Ford Mustang Mach E Leak: Mustang goes Electric

Doing nothing has gotten us to where we are today. Had we started this conversion back in 1990 when the first IPCC report came out, it wouldn't be such an issue. But, kicking the can 30 years down the road makes for more drastic measures to be implemented.

Anand's SSD reviews stand out immediately, especially when he was discussing the Sandforce controllers that everyone was using at the time that were way cheaper than intel. In fact, a lot of what Anand wrote was excellent now that I think on it a bit.

HardOCP.com: Status Quo is No Mo

I doubt I will ever enjoy someone explaining a set graph of graphs to me on youtube over 20 minutes, when I could just look at results and get what I need in 3 mins or less. I just don't see the efficiency angle from putting something in video form.

The new(ish) master of Orion (conquer the Stars) is a nice enough graphics update I’m willing to deal with the change in mechanics. It will also run on a 5 year old APU, so graphics card shouldn’t be an issue.
