Corsair TX750 fan rattle and RMA craziness

I had a early Corsair 750 many years ago. It had a noisy fan. I just swapped it over for a Be Quiet fan or similar. Took half an hour. It's still running 10 year later in a old system somewhere. I still buy Corsair.

What to do with HD 7750 1gb

I've started putting in some older cards and they just dont want to work with newer boards or systems due to BIOS etc. I'm now tossing anything pre 2015 really.

Is this guys method of applying thermal paste a good idea? Wrap cling wrap over your finger and then use it to spread the paste?

Used this method and all sorts of others in the past. The vagaries make the method irrelevant really. You can do the same method 4 times in a row and get different results every time. As long as the temps are fine and the system isn't wheezing or cutting out...done. It does make me eye roll...

Should I install these drivers from Windows updates ?

If in doubt do a version number check on the ones you have installed in Device manager. If they are quite a bit newer go for it. I've done it plenty of times for customers machines and no issues.

    Ddr4 vs ddr5

Thing is if you go DDR5 now...you'll be looking at DDR5 7000+ kits this time next year. When I bought my DDR4 setup the best was 3200... Buying now it''s peak speed DDR4 or early days slow DDR5... (though DDR5 is probably faster)

Do NVMe's SSD's today provide real-world performance advantages over SATA SSD's?

I wasn't talking about games. The question was what bottlenecks NVMe (or any storage) ...it's micro files.

Do NVMe's SSD's today provide real-world performance advantages over SATA SSD's?

I would say the real issue with storage is the trend towards microfiles. You now have software that for some reason has to store its data in tens or hundreds of thousands of KB range files. You can have 7000MBps transfer speeds but that stuff is going to copy at 10KBps all day long. As for day...

got a reminder of just how much faster a system is with SSD

Nah all the ones I get in are the HP 32GB ones that have soldered SSD/RAM. They are all in normal mode, not S and impossible to update. I have to copy the data off, rebuild and slot in a 128GB microSD and use that for the user data. They must have been pushed to the UK or something. Thank god...

got a reminder of just how much faster a system is with SSD

Windows has a lot more cacheing and data compression algorithms going on since Windows 8 days. It's moving little bits of stuff around between RAM and storage a lot more. I think a lot of it was due to them wanting to compete with Chromebooks so it had to handle running with 32GB of storage and...

    DJ Application

I had to organise a xmas party a few years ago. We had a DJ in our group who said he would do it for £250! I had seen what a DJ constitutes nowadays and its just hitting play on a playlist. Had he been a full 80's style Technics DJ I would have considered it. So instead I created a 8 hours...

    ddr4 4000mhz 2x8 vs 3600 2x16 dual vs single rank FOR GAMING

Alway remember seeing folks putting up their dual channel bandwidth and latency benches back around 2015-2018 and then I'd put in my quad channel X99 DDR4 3200 figues and it would be WTF!?! Still holds up reasonably well today.

Anybody plan on grabbing one of the new RX7xxx Navi cards on launch?

Hmmm went from a RX480 to a 6700XT that I paid £200 over the odds for 18 months ago. I wasn't that bothered as I'd had a decent inheritance so was flush. But haven't really pushed the 6700XT. The main reason was I wanted to hand the RX480 to my brother to use. Probably be a 9XXX series for...

Question about how robust is a SSD RAID 1 on an AMD motherboard ?

I would have thought different spec SSDs in RAID1 would be less critical than say in RAID0. Essentially as its just writing the same old data to two different drives. It's not like two identical HDDs or SSDs performed exactly the same either. As long as they are the same size. Sure for...

AIO or air for midrange system?

I had an Artic Cooling 4 fan 240mm AIO in my X99 rig for several years. Worked well. But then I got tired of it and fitted a single fan Noctua D15 and could not be happier. Quiter and performs as well if not better. Less power use too. I would not look at AIO's as my first choice going forward.

What is a good pagefile size for 32 gb RAM?

Yeah just set it to Windows managed. If you are that worried set it to 2048min to 4096max and forget about it. Windows doesnt just use the pagefile like it did 20 years ago. Its a bit more sophisticated now. There was a period (and I read a couple of MS papers on it) that MS essentially just...

Is a WD SN850X good for gaming/system OS?

What is a good pagefile size for 32 gb RAM?

For a long time I gave up on using pagefiles as I was running 16-32GB of ram. So I would just set a 200MB-200MB set pagefile on a SSD and leave it at that. I would have one cos some older stuff likes to know one exists. Then I started playing Fallout4 a few years back and it would throw up a...

Do you think it is worth spending $60 about to upgrade old laptops with SSD drives instead of Hard Drives ?

Yeah anyone that advocates using a HDD for your main drive no matter what other hardware you have is unacceptable, should hand their tech enthusiast credentials in at the main desk. "But I need a 12TB swapfile!"

Do you think it is worth spending $60 about to upgrade old laptops with SSD drives instead of Hard Drives ?

Yes the practice of 99% of normal domestic and small business users. I have seen it so many times. Lots of RAM but HDD = crappy sluggish performance. But even a cheap 4GB laptop with a SSD upgrade works far better for day to day usage than the former. I get asked to upgrade RAM in so many...

Do you think it is worth spending $60 about to upgrade old laptops with SSD drives instead of Hard Drives ?

You still have to pull that data off the HDD into RAM first to get there. Actually I just had in a 16GB laptop that had a 5400rpm HDD in it. It was a total dog. You would be tearing your hair out. Trust me, that dog didnt perform at all till the SSD was swapped in. It may as well have had 2GB...

Reviving SSD with only 16% health per HD Sentinel Pro?

Just throw it away man. You can buy refurbed Intel drives on Ebay for almost single digits with 100% health. I thought you where the guy happy to buy 20TB spinning rusts but not $20 for a SSD. o_O

How much does the SSD matter for gaming?

Get a PCI-e X4 card if you have a spare slot and put a NVMe on that. Works fine in my X99 system that only has the one M.2 slot. The Steam drive sits on the expansion card. The Asus ones work really well. Don't get the really cheap ones.

Do you think it is worth spending $60 about to upgrade old laptops with SSD drives instead of Hard Drives ?

Well RAM isn't the best first option if funds are tight. Try running two laptop setups - Windows 10 4GB + SSD and Windows 10 16GB + 5400RPM HDD Then tell me which worked the best. I know which one I'll grab and have my work done far quicker than the other.

Sorry...I still don't get you. Are you one of those people that appear on this forum that feels the more TB of data you have, the more impressive you are as a human being or something? Having lots of data is a millstone no one really needs in my opinion. Hoarding masses of data is an illness...
