Case connector header, e.g. ASUS - timewasting lunacy in 2022

Yah. I had an old one from ASUS, but the pinout was wrong, the "missing pin" was in the wrong place. Was that ribbon cablel home made?

advice about how to work around some challenges in Phanteks Enthoo Pro case

I need some advice on how to easily mount both HDDs and SSDs into my new Phanteks Enthoo Pro case. I just upgraded my rig to a Phanteks Enthoo Pro case https://www.newegg.com/black-phanteks-enthoo-pro-atx-full-tower/p/11-854-004. Basically I did a "transplant" of my ASUS X570 Strix-E...

I misspoke. Sorry about that. EDIT: I just checked the manual for my motherboard. No + and - signs for PLED.

Case connector header, e.g. ASUS - timewasting lunacy in 2022

I'm transplanting my desktop system into a new case, so it's like a new build. The motherboard is an ASUS X570 Strix-E, which I bought in 2020. I have no idea if my issue applies to non-ASUS boards. Once again, the hardest, most frustrating part of connecting up cables to the motherboard is...

got a reminder of just how much faster a system is with SSD

Yah. If Microsoft were smarter than it is, the Windows 10 and 11 installers should refuse to use a spinning drive for the OS. And tell all the hardware OEMs that they have to have a SATA SSD or better yet an NVMe drive as the minimum spec for any machine running Windows. Friend of mine has...

got a reminder of just how much faster a system is with SSD

I know someone who is cheap, cheap cheap to a fault. And cheaper on days when the moon is full. Last year this guy bought a mini-desktop from HP, slow CPU, minimal RAM, and a 1 TB spinner. Sheesh it was painful when he asked me for some help. I basically told him that if he wanted me to help...

got a reminder of just how much faster a system is with SSD

I am a long-time amateur, with maybe 3 GB of Nikon NEF RAW files, some CR2 files from friends, plus way too many JPGs from phone cameras. I have shot some events like my wife's company's Christmas parties and was an unofficial "second photographer" at some weddings and the like. Tons of photos...

got a reminder of just how much faster a system is with SSD

Just put an old 128 GB SDD into an old laptop that used to have a 5400 rpm spinner. With the old spinner, boot up took minutes. With the SSD, just seconds. It's like that old laptop is now useable again.

max storage for laptop with Intel i5-1250P CPU - why impossible to search out

toast0 Thanks for the suggestion for the Crucial tool. It does show a 4 TB model, not exactly inexpensive of course. Maybe in a year or two, when prices drop, I'll buy that bad boy.

max storage for laptop with Intel i5-1250P CPU - why impossible to search out

I just got a Lenovo laptop with the minimal 250 GB of NVMe storage, and bought a 2 TB Samsung 970 NMVe drive. I replaced the factory NVMe drive with the Samsung 970, and it worked. (y) Lenovo's website offered models with up to only 1 TB capacity. I saved a ton of money his way. Now I'm...

    2.5 inch HDD NAS drives

I have these really old 2.5" mechanical hard drives, 160 and 200 GB. I don't really need them any long, but it seems like a real waste to just get rid of them. About 3-4 years ago, I finally got rid of 4 Seagate 3.5" 320 GB drives. Too little to be useful and using up a drive slot in a...

    Programming an OS

My post was #13 in this thread. At this point, I (1) understand why developers code their own OS, and (2) given all the complexities of coding an OS, I have new-found respect for them.

    Is Windows 11 really bad?

Meeho Stupid, or perhaps just not informed enough. Think of the "little old lady" who uses her computer just to do zoom calls with her grandchildren, and maybe some email. The same one about whom the used car salesman swore that she drove the car only on Sundays to go to church, and never...

    WTF is up with Xfinity

I've noticed periods of poor or no service, but those periods are seconds or minutes long, then back to normal. That said, I am not so much "staying"with Xfinity" but "boxed in with no real alternatives" for my situation.

USB type A + Type C ports: what brands are good (or bad?)

Well, to be totally honest, he "must have" these new ports. I'm not sure of his existing rig, but he said that he is running now on USB ports. Also he recently bought an OWC drive dock, which uses USB C, etc. I'm not saying that his reasoning is right, but it's his money. And fortunately, he...

USB type A + Type C ports: what brands are good (or bad?)

I hope this is the right forum for this question. Friend just asked me (his "IT guy friend") about adding an adapter card to his PC for 2 or more A and at least C ports. I did some searching, but it's impossible (for me at least ...) to figure out the answer to his question. Does he have to...

Really, really need to improve cable management in my home office with way too many cables

Agree. Only cables will go in the "baskets." That is why I'm not planning to put in a power strip, which I will velcro to the bottom of the desk. Same for my network switch.

clicking noises from my Netgear GS608 switch

These old desktop speakers don't owe me anything any longer. I've had them for years and years and years now. I just found this soundbar. https://www.bhphotovideo.com/c/product/1572348-REG/dell_ac511m_stereo_soundbar.html It hooks onto the bottom of my Dell monitor, and uses a USB cable...

clicking noises from my Netgear GS608 switch

Well, call me schmuck.  Turns out that it WAS my speakers at fault. Even with the Netgear switch and my desktop turned off, the speakers were still making noises. clicking noises from my Netgear GS608 switch

If a switch makes clicking noises, is this normal or a sign of impending failure:? I have used this Netgear switch on and off from many years now.
