We ended up going with option 4.

    Data Center Network Design

Here are all three options. Option 3 means using core routers for the ESXi hosts to access storage.

Access and distribution will be Arista and core is Brocade.

    Data Center Network Design

I just wanted to see if this network design makes sense or if there is a better way it can be done. The current setup doesn't include the distribution layer, but there is also only one cab with servers and storage. So right now cab 3 goes directly to cab 1 and cab 2. Since I will be adding a 4th...

    What Tool for Automation?

My bad. I just assume going to ansible.com was the way to go and saw the pretty looking Red Hat Ansible Tower. I now see other instructions for setting it up on CentOS.

    What Tool for Automation?

Free is definitely preferred. I do keep hearing about Ansible a lot, but it doesn't look like they have a free version.

    What Tool for Automation?

I am looking for something like Puppet or Chef that can be used for automation. It needs to be agentless, and preferably free or at least not very expensive. I would like it to at least work with Windows and VMware, but support for Linux and network devices would also be nice. I was considering...

Windows 2012 R2 Failover Cluster with Virtual RDM - Cluster Across Boxes?

The VSS issue turned out to be a VMware issue with multi-pathing. They disabled multi-pathing and now it is working correctly.

Windows 2012 R2 Failover Cluster with Virtual RDM - Cluster Across Boxes?

So although virtual RDMs support snapshots, it is not recommended with bus sharing? What app based backup would you recommend? I believe the physical storage is 3PAR, but they are using DataCore SANsymphony.

Windows 2012 R2 Failover Cluster with Virtual RDM - Cluster Across Boxes?

Backups... Have a customer with many physical RDMs and on more than one occasion the VSS writer could no longer take snapshots and therefore Veeam Agent backups would fail. With a virtual RDM I don't have to worry about Microsoft's VSS writer since VMware snapshots can be used with a typical...

Windows 2012 R2 Failover Cluster with Virtual RDM - Cluster Across Boxes?

Thanks for the article, but that seems to be the same as the 5.5 article I was reading. Virtual mode only for cluster in a box and physical mode for cluster across boxes. VMFS also only supports cluster in a box. Cluster in a box is only good for guest OS failures and maintenance. No protection...

Yes. I thought that was pretty obvious from what I wrote. ;)

Windows 2012 R2 Failover Cluster with Virtual RDM - Cluster Across Boxes?

It seems difficult to find a solid answer to this question. VMs are running on vSphere 5.5 across multiple ESXi hosts. VMware documentation says both physical and virtual are supported in this configuration but physical is recommended. The same documentation also states, "Clusters across...

DC Server and snapshot removal, dc issues

How can you clone an ESXi boot drive?

Get an external cloner where you put the source and destination drives in it. Makes an exact copy. I had issues with the EFI partition and the external cloner did the trick.

    Veeam temporary snapshot not removed

I commented about this in your other post about the DC. Same applies here. Most likely your infrastructure, but would need more information.

DC Server and snapshot removal, dc issues

I disagree. While I would probably never do a full restore of a DC, the granular recovery options with Veeam is a nice feature. As for the snapshots being left, there is probably another issue you may not be seeing that is causing that problem. I had this issue quite a bit with Veeam 7 when...

    Supermicro X10DRH-iT support CentOS 6.8?

Need to know for sure that this motherboard with an LSI 3008 HBA will support CentOS 6.8. On Supermicro's website, they only list version 6.6 and 7.0 for 64 bit support. https://www.supermicro.com/support/resources/OS/C612_X10_list2.cfm Version 6.8 isn't even listed, so I am guessing it was...

Windows 7 VMware template - how do you guys keep the size down?

Curious, what kind of storage are the VMs running on? Using something with compression and deduplication should drastically cut down the amount of space used.

Fed up! How can we disable / block ICMP (ping) on ESXi 6 hosts? We need an expert!!!

Interesting... Definitely above my networking/security skill set. I am curious of use cases for this.

Fed up! How can we disable / block ICMP (ping) on ESXi 6 hosts? We need an expert!!!

Then maybe it my lack of understanding. I read it as the OP has hosts on subnet 1 that he doesn't want to respond to pings on subnet 2. We use ACLs to block ports and ICMP between subnets all the time.

Fed up! How can we disable / block ICMP (ping) on ESXi 6 hosts? We need an expert!!!

Switches and routers we work with most definitely filter ICMP.

Fed up! How can we disable / block ICMP (ping) on ESXi 6 hosts? We need an expert!!!

Why not just have the network team take care of this at the switch/router level? Pretty easy to do and also where it should be done.

First fault in 3 years, purple screen - time to upgrade vSphere?

I would think you can at least send VMware the core dump file and they can tell you what caused the PSOD. They are simply just reading the file.

    High CPU Usage

I am curious as to why you would recommend using paravirtual? It is my understanding that paravirtual should be used with higher IOPS such as databases, not for RDS. LSI 9271 with CacheCade or all SSD on ESXi

Well, just to update myself since there hasn't been any responses. ;) The LSI 9271 with CacheCade that I was watching on eBay ended up selling. LSI 9271 with CacheCade or all SSD on ESXi

For one, I have never used CacheCade before, so I am curious on how good or bad it is. I was looking at used LSI 9271 with the CacheCade license. A little background, I have two servers that are several years old. Both had LSI 9260 controllers. On one of them I swapped it for the LSI 9266...

PowerCLI to set multiple NICs on VM

I am moving VMs from one vCenter to another. Since we use distributed port groups, the network adapters show up as "invalid backing". For VMs with a single adapter it is easy to update with a script. What I would like to do is update all the network adapters via a script. I am thinking there...

    Tintri on its way!

We got another Tintri, this time the T850, in a different datacenter. I migrated 385 VMs, about 16 TB, and the performance is great. Storage is still sub-millisecond. Prior to the T850 the VMs were spread across two NetApps with 5 disk shelves and the latency was horrible.
