    transient power consumption spikes

I mean... yes, but not in a meaningful way 80+ Gold for example is rated for 90% efficiency at 50% but you still get at least 87% efficiency at 100% load. The efficiency difference between 50 and say 70-80% load which still gives you plenty of headroom is probably closer to 1%

Will Zen 4 be the real deal and a worthy upgrade from Zen 3

With so many cases having options for front and top mount radiators, I wonder if AIO's take advantage of this and offer dual radiator solutions.

Gave up and bought the GTX 1650.

I don't think PCI4 will make any appreciable difference with either of those cards TBH. You'd have been better off buying something second hand. 1650 is a pretty anemic gaming card.

    Modern GPU Stability Test?

There's no magic bullet to stress test a GPU, there's also no guarantee that it's the GPU causing the crash and not instability elsewhere in the system.

When should you replace an SSD?

The machine in question runs QuickBooks where I do my invoicing and occasional HTPC duties. The company file is stored on the SSD but also backed up to another drive as well as having a cloud based backup. Loss of the drive will not be detrimental and will not cause any consequential data loss...

When should you replace an SSD?

I don’t disagree. I understand the failure mode for SSDs and not worried about the cost of replacement. Just wondering when is a good time for replacement before a failure occurs. I don’t want to replace SSDs every month but I probably don’t want one that’s 10 years old housing critical data either.

When should you replace an SSD?

I've got an aging SSD that still works fine, but showing 81% health in Crystal Disk Info. Is there a general consensus on when to replace an SSD? For example, in my vehicles I don't wait until 0% oil life before getting an oil change.

NVIDIA reportedly wants to cut TSMC orders for next-gen RTX 40 GPUs 5nm wafers amid lower demand

Cant wait for the usual suspects around here to chime in that miners snagging cards has little to no impact on supply/demand.

    Gaming laptop longevity (vs desktop)

Quick update on this. I used the "intelligent under volting" feature in the Omen Gaming Hub utility which gave me a -0.035v offset. Also got a cooling pad. Both these combined yielded in ~12c drop for both the CPU and GPU. Not too shabby

It's really damning that none of the internet's talking heads are bringing up how AWFUL Nvidia's drivers have become

No problems here, but I don't use either of the two features you're having issues with.

    Gaming laptop help

Unfortunately, there's no easy way to tell what TDP manufacturers have the GPU set to. You'll either have to read reviews from people who own it and are savvy enough to have checked or you have to buy it and run something like HWinfo to find out. For that particular model, the 8GB of ram is...

    Gaming laptop help

Also keep in mind sleek and light comes with a lot of sacrifices. You probably won’t find 115 watt GPUs in thin and light gaming machines. You’ll also be throttling both the CPU and GPU.

    Gaming laptop longevity (vs desktop)

Bought a gaming laptop a week or two ago (i7-11800H/115watt RTX 3060/1080p @ 144hz) I got a chance to really put it through it's paces over the last couple days while I've been out of town. Performance is great, better than expected. I didn't realize just how much power they've been able to cram...

    Gaming laptop help

Keep in mind the 3070 in a laptop is not the same as the 3070 in your desktop. It's not uncommon for a 3060 to out perform a 3070 in laptops if the 3060 is a 115w variant vs an 85 watt 3070. Unfortunately, with Ampere, simply looking at the GPU model when it comes to the mobile variant, doesn't...

Will Zen 4 be the real deal and a worthy upgrade from Zen 3

AMD released 3D VCACHE not because 5k series wasn't significantly better than the 3k but because they were responding to Intel. In addition, the 5800x3d showed significant gaming improvements in many games. A non 3d Zen 4 might not be significantly better than a 5800x3d in those situations, so...

Will Zen 4 be the real deal and a worthy upgrade from Zen 3

Quite content with my 3900x at the moment. Unless some killer game comes out with absolute shit optimization that hugely benefits from single core performance, I’ll be sticking to this setup for several more years.

GPU prices — is the worst behind us ?

It’s not nearly that simple. If the 3050 is one of the more powerful cards available that is NOT being snagged by miners, it creates a demand for it that would otherwise not be there since everything else is being picked up by miners. Affecting both price and availability.

4-5 year old gaming PC vs modern gaming laptop (comparing performance and power consumption)

I figured some may appreciate or find interesting the quick little test I did. Laptop Specs: i7 11800H RTX 3060 115w variant Time Spy Score 8196 (Graphics: 8035/CPU: 9252) Power Consumption: ~200watts 4-5 year old gaming desktop: R7 2700 (non-x) Vega 56 Time Spy Score: 6721 (Graphics...

Just bought my first gaming laptop in ages. Have some questions regarding battery managment.

There's a "battery optimizer" option in the bios which is already enabled but there's no customization options at all. Just a simple on/off toggle. I suppose it'll have to do.

Just bought my first gaming laptop in ages. Have some questions regarding battery managment.

So my wife is dragging me to an out of state conference with her because she doesn't want to go alone, so I decided this would be a good excuse to buy a gaming laptop to keep myself entertained. It's an HP Omen 16 with an i7 11800H, 16GB RAM and the 115 watt derivative of the RTX 3060. This...

    Ubiquiti Dream Machine question

How many here have experience with this and what is your opinion of it? My deployments are largely using Sonicwalls with Ubiquiti WAPs+cloud controller. RTX 4xxx / RX 7xxx speculation

freeing up PCIe bandwidth doesn’t seem like a huge deal considering it’s never even close to being saturated. The more I’m reading about direct storage, the more it seems like it’s going to be marginally Faster at load times and not much else.

Agreed, the fiasco with 40 series cards will continue. If corrupt world governments (and I include the US in that statement) decide to make Monkey Pox the next COVID, this will be the case indefinitely. If they stop with the manufactured crisis’ we may see some sense of normalcy by 50 series...

There’s no debate. The claim “it’s always been this way” is patently and verifiably false. I’m also in my 40s. Hardly young. I didn’t read the rest since you said you weren’t going to argue.

EVGA B stock GPUs on sale now! $1199 3090 FTW3

That has most certainly not always been the case. Yes, they always sell out and yes there are scalpers, especially at the beginning but that usually lasts for a month or two before supply catches up with demand. Cards selling for 3x MSRP over a year in, demand out pacing supply for nearly the...

EVGA B stock GPUs on sale now! $1199 3090 FTW3

Doesn’t mean anything. 4K is absolutely not a walk in the park for 30 series cards unless you’re limiting your gameplay to CSGO and capping your frame rate. I’ve yet to see a single review where the conclusion is a 3080 or better scoffs at running 4k games.
