    help troubleshooting network file trasnfers

Actually that's a really good question. I'll see what I can do, all I have that still uses wired is my desktop and my old pi3. See if I can get that to do it.

thanks for any suggestions, i've given it a solid try and i'm beating my head against the wall. although i do admit that networking isn't my strong suit. so here's my current setup at home. file sharing within my home network using windows SMB off my desktop. other devices can get at it just...

    Apple Discontinues Last iPod Model

Actually I had a Rio back in the day ...one of the first ones that transferred through the parallel port. Yeah the software was a little cumbersome, but it wasn't really much different than itunes when it came around for the sync side of things. It was slow as molasses however and yeah the UI...

    Apple Discontinues Last iPod Model

Well I can't say that I hate the iPod, but I never saw it as anything special. I just saw it as over hyped and overpriced. Just another fad. It did it's job and did it well, but there was plenty of other devices that worked just as well or better for less money. I do concede that it was itunes...

    Apple Discontinues Last iPod Model

Out of curiosity, am I the only one that really didn't like the iPod from the beginning? They came out when I was in high school. I always hated how you had to draw circles on it as if it was a knob to change the volume. Sound quality never impressed me. Thought they were overpriced. Went with a...

Upgrade or wait: mid 2022 edition

Pretty much. I'm not into most new games or eSports so it works out in my favor. My monitors are old, 1080p. For me, it only makes sense to wait as long as I can. More so expressing my frustration at the way the market has been. I would have upgraded 2 years ago if not for the insane prices.

EKWB Lays Off 25% of Workforce, Blames Lower Watercooling Sales

CPU blocks can stick around for quite a few years with many upgrades. If you're willing to do some modification, even longer. The GPU blocks are a bit of a problem, yes. There are ways....I have never used a full coverage block myself. I have an old swiftech universal block. It only cools the...

EKWB Lays Off 25% of Workforce, Blames Lower Watercooling Sales

I'm more concerned about the custom watercooling industry dying off entirely. Sure an AIO is easier and cheaper, but that's not why we do it. Anyone that goes custom knows that it can perform better and be perfectly reliable - maybe even more reliable given that you can choose a high quality...

Picking a 16TB spinner and noise

just wanted to say thanks guys. drive took almost 2 weeks to arrive, no big deal not in a rush. this is a surprisingly quiet drive! it's quite a bit quieter than my older HGST 8TB drive and that thing isn't loud either. currently copying oodles of data... thanks for the feedback. i tried to...

Picking a 16TB spinner and noise

Getting a NAS is a nice idea, but ultimately it's more money that I don't need to spend.my desktop works quite well as a media server. Yes I did look into the exos drives. As capacity increases, so does the noise. May be just product reviews, but when I continually see complaints of noise from...

Picking a 16TB spinner and noise

I'm seriously considering buying a new 16TB drive, WD red pro. Frustrated Father Accidentally Takes Down Town's Internet

Call me crazy, but my feel on this is the father relied on the digital baby sitter too much. Kids get used to this from a young age and the habit becomes harder to break. Kids and foreseeing concequences don't go together so well. And yeah should have just taken devices away. Hopefully lesson...

    Optical disk archival storage

just my two cents... i used to do my backups with optical discs. i had a LOT of discs. i started with CD-Rs way back in the day (around '99 i think) and then went to DVD and later blu-ray. what i found was that even with blu-ray i had a pile of discs taking up room in my home. i had several...

CPU first or Vid Card First?

I second that. The inlet and outlet temperatures of the water blocks will only differ by a few degrees. If you want to be super meticulous put the part you want to receive more cooling first. It won't make much difference, but hey why not. Same reason I plumbed my system so that the pump...

best program to test HDD heatlh?

Always great advice that one. No worries on the backup front, the first thing I did was to copy the entire contents of the drive to a spare usb drive. Plus I don't keep anything critical on that drive. My critical stuff is on a 8TB HGST. Backup is a 8TB WD USB drive that spends most of its...

    need a new reservoir

So I finally got the job done. Thanks for the help. First I had to wait for parts and then find time to do the job. Older kid is at school so only one to worry about :p In the end I went with a simple right angle fitting and removed the Blu-ray drive. I haven't used it in a couple years so it...

best program to test HDD heatlh?

Thanks guys. I'll check the cables today. I did find some test tools and ran a couple stress tests. Total test time was almost 2 days (!). Didn't find anything and symptoms have disappeared for now. Strange, leaning towards cable now.

best program to test HDD heatlh?

trying to compress some video, failed and now can't delete the remains of the file. unusual refresh behaviour in explorer. but all that is irrelevant. this is an old drive and i'd like to perform some sort of stress testing to ensure reliability. what would you recommend?

Games to Play with young kids

So my older son is 4 going on 5. We enjoy playing some of my old PC games together every now and then. I'm a little picky in what he is allowed to play, so anyone have suggestions? At his age, I'm really not interested in him playing hyper violent games like FPS games. But at the same time I'd...

Overclock your budget Alder Lake CPU with BCLK overclocking

I didn't have the Celeron 300A, but I had the 333. It was quite the beast also going over 450Mhz. Then I had an opteron 165 that I managed to push to 3Ghz. Good times, would love for some of this to come back. These days the returns on overclock are small in comparison, especially a video...
