The Post Your Old/Retro Builds Thread

I noticed that the screw holes appeared to be narrower on the MSI board. It's 478 like, but proprietary it seems. Without fabrication it would seem very unlikely you'd find a replacement unless you found another identical motherboard (for parts) or had the mount 3d printed. I'm gearing up for a...

The Post Your Old/Retro Builds Thread

Looks like the retention brackets on that MSI K8T Master2-FAR are not of the standard AMD type. In fact they look a lot more like an Intel socket 478 or 604 type. This forum thread seems to support that theory. So I've been to...

The Post Your Old/Retro Builds Thread

Here's a smidge of what I'm tinkering with currently. Dual Xeon 5080's (Pentium EE 965 x2) That's right. Netburst with 4 cores and 8 threads. 3.73ghz. With a Fury X installed it handles itself quite well in Doom 2016

DAN A4-SFX: The smallest gaming case in the world

I could have done that, yes, but that's boring. I hung a couple radiators out the back because why not? I got the idea from Dan when he posted a picture of the A4 with a 240mm rad hanging out the back in the early pre-kickstarter days...

DAN A4-SFX: The smallest gaming case in the world

A couple more pics of my buiild. I decided on a 1080ti over an RX Vega due to lack of availability for the Liquid Cooled model. Hopefully you'll see where I'm going with this. Still a few more bits to get like fan grills and a PWM splitter so I can replace the GPU radiator fan with an LED...

DAN A4-SFX: The smallest gaming case in the world

I'll just leave these here... Gigabyte GA-AB350N Ryzen 1800x Corsair H110i (Only Corsair AIOs with swivel fittings on the block will work. Ones with the tubes coming straight out the top of the block will keep the side panel from fitting) Corsair HD140 and 120 RGB fans 16gb Gskill...

Kimera Industries Cerberus: The 18L, mATX, USA-made enclosure

So with only 33 hours to go and only 1/3rd of the goal met, I believe it's time to start talking about backup options. I still want this case!

Kimera Industries Cerberus: The 18L, mATX, USA-made enclosure

Just backed the Signature Edition! Can't wait to get ahold of this puppy! To clarify, you mentioned that you may give the ATX version of the case the ability to transition to use SFX power supplies through the use of a bracket purchased separately? Would such a thing be an option with the Sig...

Kimera Industries Cerberus: The 18L, mATX, USA-made enclosure

If I may add. With Pascal going with HBM2 memory, there's a possibility we may end up with somewhat shorter cards on the high end this time. This would definitely loosen the restrictions on front mounted 240mm radiators.

Looking for GPU Editors for HardOCP

I live like 30 minutes away from Chattanooga. I'm unemployed as of 3 weeks ago. APPLIED! :D This is nothing short of a dream job for me. I benchmark whatever GPUs I can afford in my basement all the time. Heck, I just spent like two days benching my old GTX 690 vs my new 980ti just a few weeks ago!

Price/Performance Be Damned - Does anyone just like tinkering with new cards?

Yeah I'm more or less the same way. Right now I'm really wanting to grab a 980 and see just how it stacks up against my 690. Even with me knowing that 980ti could be out in a few months I just want to tinker around with the 980 and then pick up the next best card when it comes out. I've always...

EVGA PrecisionX 15 is on Steam.

Just gave it a try and promptly uninstalled it and went back to the previous version. This whole steam integration thing is just stupid. Now if I want to leave it running in the background for the OSD or whatever I'll be stuck "In-App" on my status ALL the time. This has steam achievements...

Where Can I Buy New Socket A Processors?

Yeah, the biggest thing this system will struggle with on websites is anything Flash or HTML5 related. None of the old Athlon XP cpus were strong enough to decode HD video on Flash video websites like Youtube. I mean I have a dual Athlon MP box that can handle 720p flash without dropping frames...

    GTA IV Question

The most recent GTAIV patch (the one that comes with the steam version) actually makes the game run worse than older versions (like because of increased shadow quality and night shadows. If you downgrade your GTAIV to (there are a few guides on how to do it) then I don't see...

    Replacing SLI 480s

The GTX 770 is basically a rebadged GTX 680 with a slightly higher base and boost clock. The 680 in turn has slightly less performance than GTX 480 SLI. I'm sure the boosted clocks on the 770 would even things out though. With that said, I'd go with a factory overclocked 780 or 780ti for some...

    Replacing SLI 480s

I have a 690 and I love it very much, but at this point it's pretty much pointless to get one (especially for a triple monitor setup as 2gb probably won't cut it). Any overclocked 780ti will more or less match a 690 and you get the benefit if it being a single gpu with 3gb of vram. I'm looking...

What video card has served you the longest before upgrading?

Pretty much my entire upgrade path of video cards. My longest lasting by far was the 9800 Pro. For everything else I pretty much get the upgrade itch every year or two. Voodoo Rush - 1997 - 1998 Voodoo 2 Banshee - 1998 - 1999 Voodoo 3 2000 AGP - 1999 - 2000 Voodoo 5 5500 AGP - 2000...

780/Titan owners, are you switching to 780 Ti?

I've been playing with the idea of "upgrading" from a GTX 690 to a 780ti ACX. I love my 690 very much, but it does have SLI issues with a few of the games that I play most often. Of particular note are Bethesda games. Fallout/TES do not play nice with SLI at all and usually result in graphics...

    New 780ti arrived!

Very nice results there! For comparison my GTX 690 @ 1110mhz earns a graphics score of 13560, just barely higher than your 780TI when overclocked.

Gigabyte GTX 780 Ti GHz Edition

Amazing that this card has enough grunt in one GPU to match and even exceed the GTX 690 in most games. I love my 690 to death, but I may have to have one of these. SLI has some issues in a few games that I play the most. Skyrim, for instance, disables HDR completely in SLI mode and water...

Is 290X as hot and power consuming as GTX480?

I still have a system running a pair of 800mhz GTX 480's and it has been rock solid for years. If the 290x is anywhere near as rock solid as the 480 is then I don't think we'll have too much to worry about on the longevity side of things. It would be nice if that guy that was making custom...

14-15" laptop with graphics card / backlit keyboard

Hmm. I wonder how big the battery is on the Razer Blade. The Clevo appears to have a 6-cell battery with 62.16WH. Also I believe I read somewhere that a BIOS update was in the works to further improve battery life. Maybe with some optimizations we'll start to get some better battery life out of...

14-15" laptop with graphics card / backlit keyboard

I've had mine for a few weeks and I can say that unless the system comes under a significant load the fan isn't noticeable at all. Every now and then the fan will kick in while watching a YouTube video or something, but it's not really that bad. Battery usage is around the 3.5 hour mark...

14-15" laptop with graphics card / backlit keyboard

Too bad you aren't looking into Clevo/Sager notebooks because the Clevo W230ST / Sager NP7330 is practically exactly what you're looking for. It's 13" with a 1080p IPS screen (which looks gorgeous and scales well even at 900p), a GTX 765m, an i7 4700MQ (in the base model), and it even has a...

MX1000 to G700s=Sweaty Hands, Inferior Build, HELP!!

The textured surface definitely takes some getting used to. When I went from my MX518 to a G500 one of the first things that I hated was the textured surface on the side of the mouse. I almost sent my G500 back because of that, but I forced myself to use it and eventually I got used to it. The...

Does anyone use the DPI increase buttons G500 for gaming =) ??

Yeah, I typically use DPI + for melee bashing and DPI - for grenade throwing in FPS games. I try to put as many actions on the mouse as I can so I don't have to take my fingers off of the WASD keys and stop moving for a split second to perform an action.

    Resolution sharpness PC vs console..

In the case of the PS3 you're not even getting a 1080p upscaled signal. Upscaling to 1080p never really worked on the PS3 so it just pushes out a 720p signal for all games unless they natively render at 1080p. On sub 720p games it will upscale to 720p, however.

GeForce FX 5900U - A retrospective by you, the forum user

I should throw an interesting twist to this thread and pull out my HD 3850 AGP and run some tests... :D Or maybe I should dig out my 5950 Ultra and see how well it runs when being paired with a modern quad core cpu... That board with the Penom II x4 965 that I tested the 7900 GTX on just so...

GeForce FX 5900U - A retrospective by you, the forum user

Yep. It doesn't help that SLI scaling back then with those cards wasn't anywhere near as efficient as it is now with newer cards. Anyway, I popped an 8800 Ultra in the same system as I tested the other two cards and watched as it breezed through Tomb Raider at 1600x1200 with no problems...

GeForce FX 5900U - A retrospective by you, the forum user

Nope, PS3 Tomb Raider rendered at 1280x720 just like the 360 version and actually looked sharper thanks to a less aggressive FXAA algorithm and better texture filtering. It takes running at 800x600 on normal details (max you can get from a DX9 setup) to get anything resembling playable out of a...

GeForce FX 5900U - A retrospective by you, the forum user

I own an FX 5950 Ultra and I've tested it in a number of systems against a number of graphics cards and I pretty much got the same results that everyone else is talking about in this thread. For everything up to DX 8.1 it's actually a pretty good card. It's a beast at UT2k4 and even Killing...

PS4 Online Multiplayer to Require PS Plus Subscription

At least they're not restricting literally everything to PS Plus members unlike Xbox Live Gold. Want to watch netflix/hulu/youtube/etc and download movies/music? Xbox Live Gold required. Want to browse the web with IE? Xbox Live Gold required. Want to get instant access to game demos...

Wolfenstein: The New Order Written version of the Gamespot preview. Another tidbit is the health system. It seems it's using something akin to the Resistance: Fall of Man system. Players have a base health of 100 and it will regenerate only in increments of 20. So...
