I have an HP Z640 workstation that has just two 6-pin cables for graphics cards (ugh). I'm looking to put in a GPU that requires a 6 and an 8-pin cable.
How straightforward would it be to just power the GPU from another power supply?
Things that won't work
1) plugging the two 6-pin...
Usually I provide myself plenty of headroom on my builds, so I have no idea what I was thinking with this one. Anyway, two computers for my research lab have already been ordered with the following, and I need to know if the Seasonic M12II-620 PSU will be sufficient, as returning it will be a...
just a PSA: best buy may have restocked on some of its thanksgiving/black friday deals. For instance, I missed the first wave of rocketfish styli, and was pleasantly surprised to see it in stock (still with free shipping, of course) just now.
so no harm in checking stock of deals that you...
Only the *blue* sd1300 is on sale at newegg for $89 after the $20 promo code: EMCZNZR26
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16830120422
pretty sweet deal. Newegg had the sd1300 for $109 earlier around thanksgiving, but this price is even more sweet.
I'm in need of a replacement mobo for a pentium d 930 (http://www.newegg.com/product/product.aspx?item=N82E16819116238).
It seems like intel doesn't care to update its information (nor should it really care for such an old product...) on its website concerning the compatibility of chipsets with...
I was wondering if anyone else who has previous experience with integrated (or discrete) graphics failures with their laptops could give some input here.
My trusty x200s thinkpad appears to have some integrated graphics issues, though I'm unsure if it's a driver problem, i.e. software, or...
We'll it's official. Google is coming out with an OS: http://googleblog.blogspot.com/2009/07/introducing-google-chrome-os.html
I hope they can get a beta version out before the fall...after all, it would be in their favor to do so, as it might slow the momentum building for Windows 7...
New T series thinkpad apparently, as brought to you by engadget
gah, I'm really upset that lenovo messed with the thinkpad keyboard. If it ain't broke, don't fix it. Well...we'll see how this ends up--at least we're only losing the oft-unused 'insert' key. Had they moved my 'home' and 'end'...
To anyone who's not heard of crayon physics, I suggest watching this youtube video first: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QsTqspnvAaI
...crayon physics deluxe is finally on steam! holy crap. Amazing game concept and even more amazing (and serene) music!
dammit, makes me want a tablet pc now...
Trying Win7 RC 64-bit right now. There's a lot of little tweaks and things that have been improved since I tried build 7000.
But I still have one issue with Aero snap (the feature for snapping windows to the sides of the screen, e.g.)--you can't snap on the edge between two monitors on a...
Just curious, what are some signs of mobo failure?
I've been having some odd problems lately that I think might be due to my mobo (see sig) and not the indv components of my system. Here are the symptoms
1) on occasion, the system will try to POST, but then shut down, then turn on, then...
For some reason, I can't access my router (westell 7500) anymore via it's IP address from a computer that is connected to it either physically or wirelessly. Any ideas why this might be the case? Could someone have hacked it?
Not sure if anyone posted this already, but I just read this on tom's
http://www.tomsguide.com/us/windows-7-uac-vista,news-3416.html
interesting type of security flaw...
Just ran into an odd problem today with my computer.
General symptoms: upon pressing the power button, the system will turn on (HD's spin up, power/HD LEDs light up) and then turn off...and then turn on...and then turn off...etc. I don't think the system POSTed because it didn't seem to be...
the computer I built for my folks has now gone through two video cards.
I've since switched to a 460W PSU, but I'm just curious, could an underpowered psu kill a video card?
here are the rough specs of the system
2.4ghz core 2
2gigs ram
320gb wd hd
7300gt (passively cooled asus...

I need an SSD for external backup purposes of about 120GB. I'm a bit sick of seagate and WD's 2.5'' failing on me, so going SSD to ensure lowest probability of drive failure.
I'll probably make a back up about once a week of about 40-60gigs.
Was thinking of getting either the OCZ core...
So I don't know if anyone has posted about this before but...
One thing that has annoyed me about linux (for the whole month I ran 64-bit SuSE before self destructing it...) is that byte-hinting is turned off.
Yes, yes I know there are legal issues with this. But let's just say...as an...
I just installed another 2x1gb of RAM into my system recently per this thread: http://hardforum.com/showthread.php?t=1364543
i.e. I now have to pairs of RAM: one from kingston, one from corsair.
After installing the RAM, I realize that I am unable to come out of hibernation in Vista...
I recently bit on some of these because they were ridiculously cheap: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16820145177
http://www.corsair.com/_datasheets/TWIN2X2048-6400C4DHX.pdf
the thing is, I have a pair of these in my system already...
downloading 3 new vista ultimate extras right now
1) Tinker (a game I think...)
2) Tinker-related sounds/sound scheme?
3) New dreamscene content pack (#4 I believe).
Go get them while they're fresh! (oh wait...they are ultimate extras...they are 8 months stale already...)
update...
I had a seagate external HD that just died, lo and behold, right after its warranty expired. Thankfully I had a partial backup of the files, but I'm still a bit irked. So I need to buy a new external HD and, given my recent poor experience with seagate, I'm hesitant to go with them again...
I've been happily chugging along with 32-bit vista ultimate for the past year. Unfortunately, this summer something seems to have bugged out: vista can't properly install drivers for my digital camera.
In the past, accessing my digital camera (canon powershot A510) was a cinch: plug it in...
