    DIY: Tablet Mounting Solutions?

A friend of mine did what Kueller suggested. He used shapelock and a surplus lamp arm. It's no humanscale product, but it works well.

    Question about Silverstone FP58B

It is a case modding part, it is beyond like adding more ram. I did it the way I did it because it was the least expensive. A USB external which happens to be slot load only cost me $20 vs an $80+ drive listed as a "laptop replacement part." The rep points out that you can buy the adapter, while...

    Question about Silverstone FP58B

I bought an external USB samsung slot load drive SE-T084M. I harvested the drive from the case and connected it to sata. It uses mini sata for power, so you'll need an adapter. I got the adapter by cutting it from my spare antec isk300 and soldering a molex to the end of it. I left the face...

    8-pin EPS to dual 6-pin PCI-E converter/cable or DIY?

Crimp, soldering, heatshrink, twist caps, whatever you want to do to make your own cable. Each pin is rated for ~10-13A and each wire ~16-22A. With four wires you could carry over 700W. I haven't done this specific mod myself, but I keep the connectors from dead power supplies to do things like...

    A new stalker ?

I recently just played through the original stalker again using the complete mod. Replaying the old ones is still fun. I signed up for the Survarium alpha when I was trying to see if there were any simple coop mods for stalker.

    Identify this Lian Li

    Identify this Lian Li

I would say that's a RocketFish as well. It looks like a PC-A71B lacking its front door and hinge brackets because someone removed them to suit their window mod. That case did not have external 3.5" bays, but the RocketFish did.

    L connector for ATX 24-pin?

If that's absolutely what I needed I would do that. Heatgun or solder suck. There's no silicon or some package involved so it can't really go wrong. Just don't melt the plastic. Digikey or mouser may have black or other colors.

Can a laptop be charged from the 12v car jack while running?

That'd be the answer. DC-DC is more efficient. If anyone can find such a device meant for their laptop. It would provide a boost from 12V to 19V for several amps. The laptop can't be directly plugged into the car's 12V because it is not a constant voltage (alternator) and not high enough voltage...

Post your "rate my cables" here

I cut up and sleeved the wires in the stock psu of my Lian Li PC-Q12B. Photo is rushed since this is my torrent box and I wanted it back online asap. I still need to dim/replace the power led so I will get back to it!

    Power draw limit on molex?

You would think so, but LAN parties never have the man power or training for this kind of micromanagement. I'm not sure why they pick an arbitrary number and think anybody will know what it means and take actual precautions to not exceed it. The fact is every attendee with a desktop is going to...

Plugging in an LED is insignificant next to the power of the Force. But yes, 10-11A would be it.

I found an IBM PC XT in my university (photos)

Apologies for the inaccuracy, but I can no longer edit the thread title. I was not fully aware of the significance of it being hard/software compatible vs actually manufactured by IBM. When I was first taking photos and creating the thread I had not powered it up yet to see "DTK". And I assumed...

Weird question - How to power electric car seat?

If the chair doesn't have a power system then a capacitor would certainly be necessary to discharge inductive recirculation. This same behavior would happen on the battery in a car, so it depends how raw this system is or if the designed capacitor is missing. It appears power seats can use 25A...

Weird question - How to power electric car seat?

I would start by looking up the part numbers and try to find electrical wiring diagrams. They would help indicate which wire is which without having to risk damaging anything. Also it would help to know how exactly the motors are controlled. If it's all integrated within the chair then wiring a...

I found an IBM PC XT in my university (photos)

That's awesome! Yeah this thing has 7400 logic chips in it (primitive enough), building your own "cards" for it looks very possible. I'd love to put a hdd controller in this and a network interface. I need to go out and find an XT of my own. Or find the proper person to ask on how to have this...

I found an IBM PC XT in my university (photos)

Thank you for your offers, if I can get parts I'll definitely try them out in the XT. I'm not currently in the Bay Area. I was at Weird Stuff awhile ago and they seemed to have gotten rid of a lot of older cards. Maybe they just moved the aisle. I have never used 10base2 before and don't really...

I found an IBM PC XT in my university (photos)

I didn't know XT and AT were electrically different! I thought the 5-pin DIN meant they were all the same. Supposedly some Model M's will work, but at least now there will be no surprises. Someone designed a converter using a PIC12. I suppose I could try and secretly borrow a floppy drive out of...

I found an IBM PC XT in my university (photos)

*It has come to my attention that it is important to point out that this is a clone, and not directly manufactured by IBM* This is pretty cool so I thought I'd share. Antec ISK-110 + gaming?

SODIMMs and 2.5" drives sell very easily; they'd go fast on craigslist. There's not going to be an elegant solution for gaming hardware in that case. Good luck with jury-rigging.

Name This Connector (APC UPS repair)

Sata to PCI-e or 2 Molex to PCI-e?

PCI-e provides up to 75W. Dual 6-pin PEG is 150W. 225W, that's already half of that power supply just from the video card. If your card ever draws more than 350W the wires themselves will melt if there's only one molex adapting that 2nd 6-pin. Technically it should only want up to 6.2A through...

Name This Connector (APC UPS repair)

If everything else checked out and that cosmetic is all that is wrong with it then just skip the connector. Solder the wires directly to the PCB. My understanding of this device is that this connection doesn't need to be plugged and unplugged on a daily/weekly basis.

    Antec ISK-110 + gaming?

If games in a compact space are the priority for this I would say sell that stuff and get a console. If building something is the priority you won't get much gaming with just 90W. That chassis was specifically designed for a business/media use since it has a VESA mount. It could still make a...

So "the death of the PC" - how does that translate for custom rigs?

Our memories agree. -- Okay. 2013 all desktops have ceased and we're forced to move onto something else. How many new kickstarters do you think would appear to make the most optimized games ever for Ivy Bridge and GTX 600/HD7000? The hardware we possess right now can still be developed for...

    Motherboard or Power Supply Failure?

It sounds like you might not have enough resources to repair this on your own. Time to buy replacements. :) A this and that here and there and you can do more involved troubleshooting with more systems. Start with a new power supply, no one can ever have too many of those; I have I think 17.

    Motherboard or Power Supply Failure?

With mysteries like this it helps to have parts to swap. Do you have a lower powered video card to try? Will it post with the video card removed? Disconnect the motherboard and connect as many things as you can to the power supply then force it on. Load the power supply with 6 fans, 4 hard...

the OTHER right angle SATA cables

I have dozens of spare sata cables. I'll see what can be done with a knife and soldering iron. But yeah a left L probably doesn't exist since it would collide with the power connector. Usually on the motherboard end you want it straight out as the connectors are all next to each other. So you're...

the OTHER right angle SATA cables

There's an adapter that other thread found. $4.25 is rather steep when you still need a cable! I'd kind of like some of these 90 deg right cables too. Obviously it can't go left because that would hit the power connector. This was all I could find, but it's someone reselling in a thread and not...

    Raspberry Pi initial Impressions

I've discovered that I can take this dead ECS motherboard's components and beef up the capacitor and fuses on the raspi from it (also because I'm cheap). Raspberry Pi initial Impressions

I've heard about problems with the USB power for it all. It sounds like it will take some planning for the best (cleanest and most efficient) solution. Raspberry Pi initial Impressions

Could one of you explain what this means? It needs more external hardware? Is there access to a fast enough bus for connecting such chips?
