Upgrade or wait: mid 2022 edition

Battlefield is literally dead now after the 2042 release and likely won't have any more releases in the series. Even the highly criticized BF5 has more players online. If you read above what I said about the MW: Remastered example, consoles have a clear advantage since the they just ported and...

Upgrade or wait: mid 2022 edition

Yeah, released like 10 years ago... I'd actually play CS if it was something like CS:S was, but of course it's full of the usual pink rabbit hats everywhere with the "cool customizing". R6: Siege really hit the spot around 2015-2016, but then the pink rabbit hats crawled into Siege as well...

Upgrade or wait: mid 2022 edition

Well, the PC shooter market is dead. Especially after Battlefield committed the classic go woke go broke suicide. Maybe something will fill the market gap in the years to come, but as of now consoles are optimal choice for simple classic shooters.

Upgrade or wait: mid 2022 edition

These don't do the trick, they require too much from fellow players, so most of the time you are just wandering around in silence with nobody communicating in your squad. Take a few potshots after 15 minutes of silence, nothing, and then quit in boredom. Something like Ready or Not would do the...

Upgrade or wait: mid 2022 edition

I'm also leaning towards just getting a PS5. When you think of it, the PC gaming market is dead currently. For example, what if I want to play a nice simple shooter where ADHD characters don't slide around like watching a rock concert with pink furry rabbit hat costumes "because customizing is...

    RTX 4xxx / RX 7xxx speculation

Nah.. At 10 years the PSU is becoming a risk -> PSU needs upgrade GPU upgrade for a 2012 PC means there's something like a 1070-1080 bought around 2017 -> GPU needs upgrade. Modern GPU's/CPU's require a high airflow mesh case -> case needs upgrade. Memory will be DDR3 -> also needs upgrade...

Ryzen 7 5800X3D Beats Core i9-12900KS By 16% In Shadow of the Tomb Raider

It's useful data for a long term builder. 720p results today show you the difference when you upgrade to RTX 5000 series later on. Excluding maybe 4K and bigger resolutions, those will be GPU constrained for a long time still.

    Dell Alienware AW3423DW 34″ QD-OLED 175Hz (3440 x 1440)

Did you turn the monitor off? IIRC it should do it while its turned off, in in standby power.

    Dell Alienware AW3423DW 34″ QD-OLED 175Hz (3440 x 1440)

4 hour pixel refresh would probably take care of it also, without causing as much panel wear as the 1500hour/manual refresh. Assuming it works similar to the OLED TV's.

    Dell Alienware AW3423DW 34″ QD-OLED 175Hz (3440 x 1440)

Does the manual say anything about automatical refresh? Then it would be better to not do manual refreshes.

    RTX 4xxx / RX 7xxx speculation

It will fit right in there, considering you also need to upgrade cooling solutions to the same noise levels as the dryer.

    Dell Alienware AW3423DW 34″ QD-OLED 175Hz (3440 x 1440)

Heck yes, simply getting rid of the dynamic interlace patterns on that monitor will be worth it.

    Dell Alienware AW3423DW 34″ QD-OLED 175Hz (3440 x 1440)

42" is too large though, no room for speakers on my corner desk. LG also released those 42" C2 OLEDs, if you can take that size.

    Dell Alienware AW3423DW 34″ QD-OLED 175Hz (3440 x 1440)

That one's also ultrawide... damn. Well, maybe 2023 brings a 16:9 or 16:10 OLED.

    RTX 4xxx / RX 7xxx speculation

Yeah why is this even happening? Who thought it was good idea to triple the power draw lol.

Thoughts on if OLED will trickle down

OLED panels can go to even 1000Hz easily. Dell stated that they just picked 175Hz for starters, the panel could do much better.

Thoughts on if OLED will trickle down

    30" 1440p would be optimal.

"Crysis 4" confirmed with new teaser from Cytek.

Photorealism is slowly crawling into PC exclusive indie titles, when console limitations are ignored. Just look at the scene here at 3:58

"Crysis 4" confirmed with new teaser from Cytek.

After Crysis Remastered ending up a worse version than the original with inferior technology because it was based on the X360 port, I'm not holding any hopes for this one.

Star Citizen and Squadron 42 are still years from launch, CIG confirms

Why would you say so? Technological advancement pretty much stopped in 2007. Crysis still looks better than modern AAA-titles. It even has MSAA, not artificial blur filters smearing the overall image.

    3080 12 GB

Probably quite close if the supply situation is better. I'd hike the 4080 to 1299$ at least though, considering the 3080 12GB was listed at eVGA store for over 1300€.

    3080 12 GB

I am thinking about simply getting a PS5 or Xbox Series X and ride it out on the couch, until some sense appears for the pricing.

    SB katana 2

Yeah it does, it won't really work for normal PC setups. It's just wrong that the only worthwhile 2.1 audio system on the market is a soundbar more fit for console/HTPC usage.
  24. L

    SB katana 2

Gets in the way of your keyboard and mouse, unless you have an abnormally large monitor setup with extra viewing distance.

They should release a 2.1 version for PC use.

    3080 12 GB

This is a worse card than the 3080 Ti, no question about it. Yet they made it even more expensive than the 3080 Ti - nVidia did it again.

    3080 12 GB

3080 12GB preorder prices are at €1600. So I think it's more likely 1499$ will be the new xx80 segment.

    Dell Alienware AW3423DW 34″ QD-OLED 175Hz (3440 x 1440)

    It's a shame there isn't a 16:9 version.
  30. L

    Samsung 34" QD-OLED

But it's not the same thing. The creep into 16:9 happened because 4:3 didn't take into account the fact that humans have two eyes. 21:9 is additional luxury for a niche, wanting extra field of view. Like those eyefinity multi-monitor setups. If you don't have desk space for the super wide...
  31. L

    Samsung 34" QD-OLED

16:9 doesn't need "reintroduction", it's the standard. 21:9 is more of a curiosity than a new standard, it doesn't even fit on most desks with decent vertical height.
  32. L

    Samsung 34" QD-OLED

Input lag issues, doesn't always work properly... 100% native scaling still has it's benefits. And with 32" being the standard size for 1440p computer monitors for some stupid reason, you would only get benefits for shrinking towards the 96PPI reference point at 30.6".
  33. L

    Samsung 34" QD-OLED

Hmm? 27 inch 1080p is 81 PPI. But yeah 27" 1440p is definitely sub-optimal, even though it's bearable. Windows fonts are designed for 96 PPI, it's a shame monitors don't aim for that. 30.6" 1440p would be much nicer than 32" 1440p.
  34. L

    Samsung 34" QD-OLED

It depends on PPI, not screen size. 42" 4K is equivalent to a 27" 1440p monitor -> it should be noticeably worse experience than the 32" you used (if it was 1440p).
  35. L

    Samsung 34" QD-OLED

Windows font is designed for 96 PPI, so the 48" would be most optimal choice in that regard. If we ignore subpixel layout issues. Which makes me kinda sad there isn't any 30,6" 1440p monitors available. It would hit exactly 96PPI and have less distinctive pixels than 32" 1440p offerings.

    Thermal pad replacement (brand discussion)

Ars Technica article: No end to chip shortages

CPU prices are already going "normal" with Zen 3 price cuts after Alder Lake. GPU prices would be already seeing the same development... if it wasn't for the cryptos. And this is a fact, without even the new production capability that is coming up in the US and elsewhere few years down the line.
