Well it looks like my offer for a E3-1280 was accepted so I'll be using the intel board.
Comparing both, seems the E3-1280 will have a lower typical power consumption compared to my i7-870 Asus setup.

I actually haven't through about much about passthrough at this time.
My plans for the hypervisor is:
-Gain experience with proxmox/and possibly xenserver
-VM's to create:
--PFsense possibly
--Game Server
--Pi-Hole ad blocking server/DNS
--Few Windows Server OS's to setup AD/DHCP and such...
Hey everyone, I have a few i5 series desktops in my home that I acquired from a local college. I was selling off a bunch of them but turned one into a gaming pc a few months ago and now I want to convert it into a proxmox/hypervisor node.
The units I have are fairly current and have either of...
Thank you for all that Allenpan.
As per your recommendation, I purchased 32gb of corsair memory and just received it today. The motherboard accepted it and the system booted up just fine.
I have an i7 870 waiting to get installed and waiting for the delivery of my quad NIC.
Thanks for the help
Thank you for that.
With the CPU, it's identified that it will run 16GB Max, so just curious...what do they base that limit on and how can you run 32GB? Has the system been stable with the memory?
I'm planning on using it at a server for proxmox
Thanks for the reply.
The card that I used was an experiment that I am quite pleased with. Netac 64gb. class 10, UHS3 card.
P500 64GB(Class 10,UHS-I U3)-Shenzhen Netac Technology Company Limited
Netac P500 64GB Micro SD Memory Card
We will see how this performs over time, the card was a low...

Hey guys, I've never tested nor done much with microSD cards in regards to comparing them for speed but I purchased a Firefly 6S a few weeks back and wanted more space so I recently purchased a Class 10, 64gig, with...
Hey guys, I'd like to have my networking gear and a server or two in my basement but I'm having difficulty with device placement because of heat conditions in the furnace room.
My basement is all finished, including the furnace room as depicted below. I want to keep my HP media server, router...
Sorry, as I'm not a n00b with computers, I am a n00b regarding data and servers haha
So I'll do my best.
Currently my EX490 home server has:
-Intel Q9550s core2quad CPU
-4GB DDR2 memory

I am moving files from SMB share to SMB share...such as \\ServerName\Videos...
Good morning everyone,
I am on my old HP EX490 media server doing some much needed maintenance of the files on it and I've come across something quite disturbing to me.
I am moving data from one shared folder (videos) to my other shared folder (uTorrent) and the transfer rate is about 4.09...
Heya guys, so a quick overview of my home network.
-EX490 MSS server with an E8400 processor and 4gig ram, 8tb of storage. Connected to my E4200 router via ethernet.

Hey guys, I've been experiencing some really odd issues on my home network that tend to bring it down to a crawl for a few minutes then traffic gets relieved.
So what I have setup:
E4200v1 with DDWRT on it.
2.4ghz/5ghz bands as one SSID.
Devices that I constantly have on and...
Hey guys,
I am looking at doing some read/write tests on a few SSD drive's this week. Rather then hooking them up to my desktop, I was wondering if I could do the tests using my x220?
My x220 has a usb 2.0 port and I do have a USB to Sata cable.
I am guessing that my limit is the usb...
that's interesting.
I've also been looking for a quad NIC.

I don't think there is much demand for aluminum consumer grade router cases.
Thanks for the replies guys.
As I am new with Radius, does it have to authenticate with AD? We did light radius work back in school but I cannot remember how it was setup.
I initially thought I could host a VM running an OS that will run the Radius services for authentication. It seems like...
Hey guys,
I am trying to be a bit more creative with my home network and build up on some knowledge as my current workplace does not challenge me at all.
After upgrading my old E4200 to the most recent DD-WRT version, I've been thinking more about security. I always use strong keys...
Its not that old and I'd still think it's usefull.
I have upgraded from a E8400 core2duo cpu to a i5-750.
It's not the latest and greatest, but it's great for those on a budget.
Hello, it's me again.
I've been a bit confused on how to hookup the front I/O USB 3.0 connector.
It's the blue, 20pin cable. Would that attach to my motherboard? I've never seen a connector like that on a motherboard.
Thanks KrylonArt,
So those fan headers, would they connect to my motherboard I'm guessing? or would it connect to some kind of fan adjustment device?
Since I have 3 lines, does that represent 3 fans at the front of my case?
Hey everyone,
I have searched in regards to my current issue without any luck finding a resolution.
I recently purchased a Fractal Design Define R4.
After installing my components, I needed to hookup the cabling that comes from the front of the tower.
There were a total of 5 cables.
1) One...
Here is my current desk.
Ikea Bekant corner desk. I don't want to stand while using a PC so its the regular model.
Excuse the mess. Just finished painting/setting up and assembling the desktop.
Tsumi,
Before I moved the card was in my old tower and worked like a charm.
CaptNumbNutz,
I wasn't able to locate a 2-sata to 6-pin connector, my friend thought he had one but didn't. What he did have was a EVGA 850 B2 power supply.
I brought it home and installed it, along with my 5750 card...
Thanks for all the replies, it helped me understand a bit more :-)
Now to the actual issue at hand.
I went out and I was able to only source a non-Y Sata to 6-pin connector.
I installed it a few minutes ago and my pc would not boot. The power LED goes on then shuts off shortly after, the...
So guys, as I am fairly new to this...what would happen if I did decide to run this card, overclocked with the single sata-to-6pin connector.
Since it would be much more watts running then what would be safe bet, would that cause potential cables from melting/overheating and such?
Just curious...
Arcygenical,
Thanks for the reply and helps clear it up a bit. For the 5750 being used in full load (90w), would that be playing a more recent game and working the card good or is that a representation of overclocking it?
So from what I understand, if I was able to get one of those Y-Sata to...
Tsumi,
Specs:
-Enermax Modu 82+ PSU
-Sapphire HD 5750 Vapor-X
I've looked locally and I can't seem to find a Y-Split Sata cable to one 6-pin adapter.
