DOJ Has An Eye On Apple

You mean the stuff that the Microsoft did in the 90s that the DOJ found illegal and nearly caused them to split up the company? This is NOT aggressive business tactics, it is anti-competitive and abusing their position of power in one segment to unfairly compete in another.

The Race to Gigabit Internet Taking Off

Heh, San Diego is on the list. Good luck with that. Back in Lexington, KY where I used to live we had an independent called Insight. When we left, they had rolled out 30MBit, which including cable TV (HD, DVR, Modem, etc.) we were only paying $75/mo for everything. Out here, TWC was charging...

As you guys know I'm on Noritake's list for sample announcements. This might be useful for some of our resident modders. Basically, a simple glass capacitive 12 button touch panel. The panel includes the controller board with an Atmel QTouch controller...

Issue with only on one pc

Just as an update. Cleared cookies, that didn't help. Tried hard reset of w8. No luck. Gave up. Yesterday, upgraded DD-WRT on my router just for fun. Did a complete hard reset as part of the process. All of a sudden everything is working perfectly. So it appears it was something corrupted in the...

Issue with only on one pc

Have a strange one, refuses to load or only loads slowly on a single pc on the network. Scanned with Microsoft security essentials and MalwareBytes. Nothing found. I can't think of anything that could cause this and am at a loss of where to look. Device: Asus Zenbook OS: Win 8.1...

Another Noritake-Itron Free VFD (114x16 graphic or 16x2 char)

Yep, its back again. This time you get to chose between a 114x16 graphic display or a 16x2 character display. The 16x2 is HD44780 compatible making it very easy to retrofit into existing code. And damn I feel old, a member for a decade!

    Noritake-Itron 24x6 character VFD Sample

Received mine, was surprised that I didn't get a ups quantum view email like I had in the past. It seems that this sample has been popular. According to the website, due to this you might get a small graphic vfd instead. If you are thinking about jumping on this one, tomorrow is it.

    Noritake-Itron 24x6 character VFD Sample

Sorry for not posting this earlier. This is the third sample they have offered (plus an enormous one I got for answering a direct). It's a 24x6 character VFD. The others all had integrated drivers and controllers. That being said these are not for novices. They typically require either rs232 or...

Has Wikipedia Reached the End of the Internet?

Very true, I'm a scientist and I often read Wikipedia to get my bearings on a new topic. I wouldn't cite Wikipedia but that's not because I think it's data is incorrect. It's because when someone hours back to read my citation then article may have changed with new moire moern info which would...

    Recommend me a microcontroller...

Your color video output requirement is the difficult part. Most uc's are designed more for using a display to provide status and other real time info. Much less so as an interface. The rendering of graphics requires a decent amount of processing capability. You are getting into arm range uC...

    Hacking a Digital Picture Frame?

OK, first off it likely isn't a simple MCU. More than likely its a slightly more customized one intended for multimedia applications. I say this mainly because most smaller MCU's would suck at driving a graphic LCD. It can be done but usually they are CRAZY slow. I see that SPHE appears to be...

Apple Seeks U.S. Ban on Galaxy Nexus

I really think that in general the USPTO does not do its due dilligence on initial patent applications. Asus website also confirms that it is MVA. Oh well I suck. In apology here is the 23" Asus IPS panel ML239H that I mentioned for $162.99 after rebate (same one) plus free shipping. Link Maybe a mod can restructure my first post to put this in the title instead.

Hmm, well newegg confirms the ML239H is IPS. Odd not sure what to think. Good chance I guess that walmart is wrong. Sorry if it ends up this isn't an IPS panel. I was just trying to post what I thought was a good deal.

Asus 24" IPS-Panel and LED for $179.99 after rebate

Walmart description clearly says IPS. My apologies if the walmart description is wrong. Edit: you edited your post while I was replying. It seems like a heck of a deal to me too, almost too good. I also have found the 23" IPS ML239H for $162.99 using the same rebate form.

Quantum Dot Television Technology Becoming a Reality

Argh. Quantum dots are NOT new. IIRC, they came out of the dimensional exiton trapping experiments (so trapping the exiton in a single dimension or a point) at Bell Labs in the 50s. These have been around for years. I am pretty sure LG either already HAS a TV out or will next year that uses...

    Happy 10th Birthday, iPod

Ummm Diamond Rio and similar devices beg to differ, they were quite popular in their own right. That being said, they were clunky, difficult to use, low on storage (flash memory was super expensive) etc. Now if you want to say mp3 players as we know them today did not exist. THEN you have more...

    trying to fix a TV

Most I have seen are ONLY bad caps. Occasionally though the bad caps will take a part or two with them. Usually a surface mount fuse. The worst I have seen are when small value caps go bad and fail shorted. This usually then toasts the board.

ESD: Truths, myths, and flat out lies

THis is not quite true. If a device somehow gets a high voltage fault (say a flyback starts faulting to the chasis or maybe lightning strike) which travels through your ground you will get a momentary point where your ground is no longer at earth. It can be quite high though for a brief moment...
