    crucial ballistix RMA

Just had one of my sticks die on me last night. I'm in the same boat with the original packaging. I JUST threw it away a couple of days ago too, thinking that I'd never need it. My plan is to buy a different brand of RAM as a replacement. Then, I'll use that packaging to RMA my ballsticx. I...

    Corsair 550VX power supply question.

Yes, the 8-4( = 4) pin is compatible with the p4 connector. My 550vx is silent. Honestly, as long as you have one case fan in your system, no matter how quiet it is, it will drown out the sound of the PSU. Runs everything in my sig.

    Durable Laptop?

My buddy asked me to find a good laptop for him. The key feature is durability. Basically, he wants it to withstand being knocked off his desk without breaking. He's only going be using it for basic computing--e-mail, dvds, etc, so performance isn't a real concern. I was looking at a Thinkpad...

I think my hard drive is dead. Tips before i RMA it

I had that same drive die on me too (the PATA version, though). But my problem, from what I could tell from the noise) was the head grinding against the platter. I took it out, let it sit for a day, and than ran it upside down. Was able to keep the drive working for the few hours it took to...

    MSI NX8800GT 512M OC GeForce?

Any thoughts on whether to keep the plastic cover that goes over the fins? On one hand, it seems that it helps ensure that air from the fan blows over the fins; on the other, the stock cooler from Zalman doesn't have a cover and you think they knwo what they're doing.

will the corsair 520HX be enough for my system?

Yes. I have the 550vx, and it runs everything in my sig. Granted my cpu and vid card are not as power intensive, but there's not too much of a disparity. Plus, I'm not even anywhere near straining my psu, so there's plenty of headroom left. A 520 should do you fine, with room to spare.

    Anyone up for giving advice?

In a few years from now, you'll be buying a new computer. Even if the quad-core can handle games 3 years from now, the vid card won't. And likely, whatever vid cards are available 3 years from now won't work with the motherboard and power supply you buy now, so you won't be able to upgrade. So...

Socket 478/775 heatsink mounting hole pattern/dimensions...?

Don't know where you can find the dimensions for the mounting holes, but I would try looking at newegg. If they sell HSF that mount on both socket 478 and 775, then they must have the same locations for the mounting holes.

    best small 775 heatsink ?

From what I read, you can use this bolt-down kit with the TX2. http://www.sidewindercomputers.com/lgbowiscsp.html I was going to get it myself, but I'm cheap and my temps aren't so bad that reseating is necessary.

    best small 775 heatsink ?

No, they're telling the truth. It took me about 30 min to install my TX2. I was glad of the intel heatspreader, b/c without it, I definately would have crushed my core with the shitty angle and intense pressure that it took to get the TX2 on. Here's a tip: take off the plastic shroud for...

You can stop asking about ClubIT. The rock: on par with the 'Egg. Only down side is that they don't lower shipping when you buy more than one item in an order (e.g. if a mobo ships for $7 and your vid card for $8, you pay $15, whereas with the 'Egg, they'll prob. lower it to $12 or something)

e8400 and what kind of memory is best for it?

Way to read the thread. 1066 is overkill for a HTPC that's not going to be overclocked. I agree with the above posts re: just buy the cheapest you can find. DDR2-666 is all you need. Your FSB:ram should be at 1:1 (no performance gain from running RAM faster). SO, if you are going to stay...

    Intel Build Check Please

Why a G35 mobo? You have a graphics card, so you don't need integrated graphics. P35 is the same but w/o the integrated graphics. FYI, you'll need a 64-bit version of windows to see all 4gb of RAM, 32-bit versions only see up to 3.6GB. DO you absolutly need the quad-core cpu? Consensus is...

    e8400 problem

Taking a stab at answering your grammatically-shitty question, I'm guessing that you need to go into the BIOS and make sure that the voltages and memory timings are set to the correct specs given by corsair. Read the core 2 duo sticky in the OC/cooling forum about how to change such things.

Good quiet affordable, e8400 heat sink?

I'm running a Coolermaster TX2. During the holidays, they were $2 after rebate. It's taken me to 3.9GHz now. Though my load temps are at 67°. I'm hoping that it just needs to be reseated. Only downside--it's a 92mm fan, so the noise is noticeable, though it's quiter and lower pitched than...

    What is Crossfire?

Crossfire = ATI's version of nVidia's SLI. Both allow you to link 2 installed graphics cards for added performance. A mobo will only support Crossfire or SLI, not both. Thus, if you want to link 2 Nvidia cards together, you must by an SLI enabled mobo. And if you want to link 2 ATI cards...

    Everest and BIOS differences

Gigabyte's not the only one. My MSI board does the same. 2.2V on the RAm in BIOS, speadfan reports 2.0V. CPU volts are about .02V low as well. Good to have this question answered. I'm fine tuning my OC now and I may need that extra .2V on the RAM.
  39. L

See, I don't know if you can trust the coretemp reading. For example, CPUZ say my VID is 1.088, which sounds about right, while coretemp says its 0.98.
