Simple MS Word fields question -- driving me crazy

Anyone? Hello? I'm stuck in the MS-Word dark ages and I can't get out.

Simple MS Word fields question -- driving me crazy

Overall I'm pretty competent in Word, I think -- autogenerating reference text, using fields, etc. -- but one simple issue is driving me nuts. I'm trying to automatically insert exhibit letters/numbers in-text so they'll update as I delete or add references, e.g.: Updating each letter...

    Aaargh. Obsessively customizing Firefox toolbars?

I can't believe I'm posting this. OK, maybe I'm off my OCD meds, or maybe it's that my laptop is cursed with a 1024x768 screen, but I can't quite get my FF3 to look the way I want it. To wit: On the second toolbar, I'd like the Google Toolbar elements (on the right) to butt right up...

You dirty son of a bitch! Why would you recommend that game to me? I don't know where Tuesday went. Or Wednesday.

    Games for gimps

I can almost tie my own shoes again! On the downside, EE2 was a losing proposition -- apparently my left hand has Down's. I just can't keep up. Good call on the KOTOR, though. Forgot how genuinely epic that game was. Galactic Civs 2 got really good reviews. I'm surprised I hadn't heard of it...

    Games for gimps

It probably looked about like that, only my bike is way less awesome. And I wasn't smiling so much. KOTOR could work. The pause button will come in mighty handy. I'll also have to look into turn-based strat games. I haven't played one of those since Alpha Centauri.

    Games for gimps

Apparently it was one of those new model ejector seats. I didn't even know the bike had one, but I can't otherwise explain how I managed to separate myself from the bike by a good 20 feet. Unfortunately, it's the mouse hand. Nothing broken in the other hand; I just scraped the palm clear off...

    Games for gimps

This weekend I decided to try out the ejector seat on my mountain bike, so now I'm left with a busted wrist and two weeks to kill. Any recommendations for decent games which don't require coordination or timing? I've been looking at Rise of Nations, something along those lines.

    Basic network setup issues

Thanks for the advice, all. Gotten everything working. Here's a rundown in case anybody else has the same problem: From one side, the problem was a firewall issue. From the other, somehow my network guest permissions were changed. In XP Home, there's no option to fix this directly, so you...

    Basic network setup issues

Annoyingly, that works. There's still a weird delay when navigating shared folders -- the window hangs for 5-15 seconds -- but at least things are accessible. Thanks a bunch. So at this point I just add the DHCP server and machine IPs to Zonealarm's trusted zone?

Thanks for the input. I tried that, but no luck. The problem seems to be that I can't access network computers at all. I keep telling myself this should be easy.

    Basic network setup issues

A bit more detail, if it helps: Under My Network Places\Microsoft Windows Network\[network name], I can see the names I assigned to both computers, so there's at least some recognition of the workgroup. Opening the local machine (on either system) works fine, but trying to open the other system...

    Basic network setup issues

I've got a water-cooled rig, I've got the appropriate ports forwarded for various apps...but for the life of me I can't set up a basic wired/wireless network. I've got a Buffalo WHR-54G-HP connected to a DSL modem; a WinXP Home desktop wired into the router; and a WinXP Home laptop connected...

Bioshock lived up to the hype, and then some. Scores like 9.5/10, 10/10

System Shock 2? Buy it buy it buy it. Best, most immersive, most compelling singleplayer experience I've had in front of a computer. I still remember the first time a hybrid came lurching around the corner, swinging a pipe at me while whatever portion of it was still human begged me to...

Running Fallout or Diablo 2 fullscreen?

Thanks, that's looking like a workable solution. I had thought pixel interpolation was ugly at higher nonnative resolutions, but damn it's hideous when dropping down to VGA!

Running Fallout or Diablo 2 fullscreen?

One more thing. I've got my 21" CRT hooked up as a secondary monitor, and can set that as low as 800x600. Unfortunately, I'm too stupid to know how to tell WinXP to run a game on the secondary monitor. Ideas?

Running Fallout or Diablo 2 fullscreen?

I'm stuck with my old laptop while you bastards are playing Bioshock, so I've returned to some old favorites -- Fallout and Diablo 2. Problem is that Fallout runs at an unchangeable 640x480, and D2 runs at the same though there's apparently some sort of LOD hack that gets you to all of 800x600...

Different router for a stronger 802.11g signal?

Gah. I've been reduced to taking measurements and doing middle-school trig to find a signal path, but so far all I've determined is that I've forgotten a lot since seventh grade. I've also found by walking around, laptop in hand, that I can get a perfect signal everywhere except my newly...

Different router for a stronger 802.11g signal?

Yikes, those are a bit expensive. [edit: referring to the external antenna, not the Buffalo gear] I'm holding off on any major purchases as I plan to move in a few months. So you're saying that a different router, one with multiple antennae, wouldn't make for a stronger signal? What about a...

Different router for a stronger 802.11g signal?

I'm trying to set up a workspace for my older laptop (an Averatec 3225 with a generic integrated 802.11g adapter) but the Belkin F5D7230-4 router I picked up seems to have trouble powering through the 1930s adobe walls of my house. The workspace is only 20-30 feet away from the router, but the...

Unidentified WinXP service: "sugo3 Status Monitor Service"

Well, I think it is -- based solely on some filename associations. Is there some way to verify which file the process actually refers to? After all, if "C:\Program.exe" doesn't exist, it's got be executing from somewhere else.

Unidentified WinXP service: "sugo3 Status Monitor Service"

Weird. I just did what I should've done from the start, which was to use Google Desktop to check for related files. It looks like the process is related to the new Samsung laser printer I just installed. Thing is, HiJackThis reports that the service's owner is unknown (in contrast to, say...

Unidentified WinXP service: "sugo3 Status Monitor Service"

After installing the latest annoying Quicktime update, I went through the Apple-purging ritual, deleting the unrequested Quick Launch icon and disabling the qttask service. This time I noticed a new service I hadn't seen before: I ran Ad-Aware and AVG scans, neither picked up anything...

    Warm storage deals at newegg Open Box WD4000AAKS $112 + S&H Seagate ST3500630AS $115

"Open box" doesn't exactly mean refurbished. According the Egg's FAQs: I'm guessing the "15 days" bit means that's the generic maximum Newegg will warrant an open-box item for, because the product page for the 7200.10 states that Seagate will back it for the full five years. Decent deals...

Google Top Brass Gets $1 Salary

Where on earth did you get that idea? As of 2006 the richest 1 percent of Americans paid about 30 percent in federal taxes, and maybe a few percentage points more in state and local. Not trying to start a debate on taxes or whether or not they're fair, just pointing out a fact.

Google Top Brass Gets $1 Salary

If I was a multi-billionaire I'd spend a couple bucks on security too. Kidnapping for cash isn't too prevalent in the US, but it's not unheard-of, and more to the point the Google guys are public figures and there are always nutcases out there. Then again, why the company should foot the bill is...

Jack Thompson demands an early copy of Bully of he'll sue

That's entirely it. A federal Appeals Court last year affirmed that video games are protected expression under the First Amendment. That means that, no matter how many times Mr. Thompson sues or gets on CNN, a court can't ban or prevent the sale of a particular game. The only thing he can do is...
