Thief Video Card Performance Preview @ [H]

Thanks for the review. Would be great to see some 1080p results for 120/144hz users - and this is where Mantle should shine due to improved CPU bound performance.

LoL at the GPU police xD must have shares. Good luck with your RMA, hope you get it.

Conclusion: Crossfire x2 R290X is overkill in my opinion

I don't think it's overkill OP. 1 GPU isn't enough for 144hz 1080p or 60/75hz 1440p imo. Yeah I know 1080p is on the "low" side for MGPU these days, but to produce 144fps requires more muscle than 60fps at 1440p.

    780 GTX overclock results

Best I can get is 1306 at 1.28v with reference cards in SLI, but too hot for 24/7. I run 1228 1.21v in summer and 1267 1.25v in winter (or if I want a bump for demanding games) I've slightly adjusted fan curve so it's a little steeper, but it's not far from default. I don't find them noisy...

Nice score. Can you run the current Heaven 4.0 and Valley at extreme presets please? Cheers.

Gtx680 SLI performace disappointing. Is this normal?

Use Unigine Valley to test GPU scaling in SLI

Best single slot Card for Physix

Unless you are going to use a Titan, there's no point in adding a dedicated PhysX card as it will only reduce performance.

    Geforce 770 & 780 coming in May

Set iFPSClamp to 60 in the Fallout.ini Be aware everytime you open the launcher config and change an option this will revert to its default setting.

    Down-sampling = Eye-strain?

I find using a resolution that is not a multiple for downsampling doesnt look so good. Either use 2x2 res, or 1x2, or 2x1 (width by height)

    Enthusiast setups now CPU limited?

They are only priced as such because there is no real competition atm.. but sure, dev's need to make better use of multithreading, and this should hopefully happen with the next gen of console ports. As it stands though, the way many current games are coded many games are CPU limited and run...

    Enthusiast setups now CPU limited?

Yeah its because of lack of competition on the CPU front.. It's pretty annyoing tbh as there are games that drop below 60fps even with the fastest CPU's available, let alone 120fps.

3D Vision: Your best game experiences

3D movies suck, I agree. 3D gaming is different in that you have total control of the image and are able to customise it to your liking. The same game can look very different depending on the depth and convergence settings you use.

3D Vision: Your best game experiences

You need to adjust your contrast and/or brightness to remove or reduce it. Some displays are worse than others.

Nvidia Should Be Held Accountable For OverCharging With Lower Performance.

They're not? Premium is too strong a word but in essence I think they are. AMD offer a value solution with less features and support. Nvidia offer a "premium" solution with more features and support. Thats all there is to it really. Theres a reason AMD have to undercut Nvidia in pricing...

AMD Crossfire a scam - Almost no benefit over single card

I don't believe its by design as thats just the default behaviour of AFR. Them saying they purposley deliver frames in as little time as possible is another way of saying they don't have frame metering tech. AFR, or any method of frame rendering tries to deviler them as quickly as possible...

AMD Crossfire a scam - Almost no benefit over single card

The way I see it, due to AFR and AMD's lack of frame metering the fully rendered frames are just not delivered evenly - aka microstutter. Runt frames are still fully rendered on the GPU, but delivered with very poor timings. I would be very surprised if AMD was only rendering partial frames...

Nvidia Should Be Held Accountable For OverCharging With Lower Performance.

Yeah fully rendered on the GPU, so its not cheating as the GPU still has to do the work, but its only partially rendered on the display making it useless, and reduciung the perceived frame rate as reported by Fraps.

Ha, no was just trying to say its even worse than half, at 20 scan lines (or pixels) or less.

How will games run on Nvidia Gpu's and Intel Cpu's when PS4 and Xbox3 are released

Lol, no I'm pointing out Nvidia wont have issues with directcompute when it becomes widely used in gaming. I gave you examples along with each GPU's capability. I dont own Titan, nor do I think its worth the money.

AMD should be held responsible to CF owners who bought cards based on reviews.

Then how do you explain 680 SLi results which lack hardware metering? You are right though, afaik hardware metering was first introduced with kepler on the 690. Frame metering has been around since G80 though, if not earlier, and I think you will find results that show SLi had less ms even...

AMD should be held responsible to CF owners who bought cards based on reviews.

Yes hardware frame metering, in the 690. Software frame metering has been around since G80. GTX680 doesnt have hardware frame metering for example, either.

How will games run on Nvidia Gpu's and Intel Cpu's when PS4 and Xbox3 are released

I didnt cherry pick anything, I showed you an example of good performance in directcompute when coding allows. I even stated that. Passmark is not ilegitmiate. It clearly shows the operations per second which are capable in directcompute from each GPU. What can you gather from that? A/ the...

AMD should be held responsible to CF owners who bought cards based on reviews.

Actually in the article you linked it says Nvidia have been implementing frame metering since 8800GTX. Great that AMD will offer a choice, I think thats excellent and hope Nv follow suit.

How will games run on Nvidia Gpu's and Intel Cpu's when PS4 and Xbox3 are released

Obviously in the directcompute benchmark SLi isn't used.. not that difficult to work out. It accurately shows the operations per second capable from each GPU. What you fail to realise is performance of directcompute depends on the apps specific coding. For example As you can...

I can feel input lag with vsync at 120hz, as I said its not an option. Theres no need for it at 120hz either, especially if you can maintain a solid 125 or 250fps frame cap. There are 1440p 120hz displays too btw. Radeon pros dynamic frame rate control is just an fps limiter btw, its not vsync.
  29. D

How will games run on Nvidia Gpu's and Intel Cpu's when PS4 and Xbox3 are released

Why will AMD have the advantage? Nv can run direct compute perfectly fine and have the fastest GPU available for direct compute.

Next gen high end to cost over 1k like Titan?

Thats the point. GK104, Nvidias "mid range" chip akin to Pitcairn, is roughly level with AMD's top performer, all while being more efficient and offering more in terms of features and support. The GTX680 was a big kick in the teeth to AMD, it is no different than if 7870 performed on par with...

Who knows and it will be interesting. AMD GPU + CPU could be the recommended config for gaming rigs in a year or two from now.

Lol at this thread. Nvidia charge more because they offer more, its as simple as that.

AMD should be held responsible to CF owners who bought cards based on reviews.

I don't know and thats a good question. I can only guess there are instances of groups of frames, say 3, that are delivered in rapid succession? And yes I would have thought so too flu!d, I have always seen a perceivable increase in performance with the 3 CFX systems I owned. I dont buy their...

Yeah seems to show whats going on well. Many people dont use vsync because it intoduces a number of issues. I play a lot of online FPS and vsync isnt an option. Tearing can be managed or minimised btw, without the use of vsync.

That doesnt make sense because the screen refreshes from top left to bottom right. The order is grey, pink, yellow. The yellow frame continues onto the next refresh aswell, at the top. Remember this isnt like a film reel, these are the timings at which they are drawn and dont really have a...

Actually here's a good diagram of evenly spaced/timed frames, imagine between frame 1 & 2 there is a tiny sliver (very quick runt frame)

AMD should be held responsible to CF owners who bought cards based on reviews.

During each monitor refresh the image is drawn from top left to bottom right, line after line. At 60hz this takes ~16ms. When a new frame is recieved, the monitor stops drawing the old frame at whatever point it was at during the refresh cycle. This might be half way down the screen, at say 8ms...

Runt frames are the result of frames being delivered too closely together, so the runt frame only takes up a few pixels worth of the display. In this sense, runt frames are microstutter. Imagine this is 3 frames on the display during a single refresh/scan cycle. Frame 3 is displayed so...
