    New Issues with Previously-Stable 2500k

Keep us posted if you do RMA the PSU. I'm curious what the CS is like, and what criteria they use to authorize an RMA.

    New Issues with Previously-Stable 2500k

My current board, a Gigabyte Z170 UD5 TH also had sporadic crashes for a good 6 months before a BIOS update fixed it...it was also ridiculously tough to troubleshoot, I swapped almost everything (even RMAed the CPU) and finally came to the conclusion that the C-states set in BIOS was causing the...

Ever see a cooler defect like this? (no pun intended)

So I bought this BeQuiet! Shadow Rock Slim on eBay...the seller claimed it was new, and it appeared to be by the look of the box and film at the base. But wait! I got a refund as the seller was unaware and it didnt make sense to pay the shipping back (US back to Canada). I tried opening a...

    Motherboard with 5+ PCI ports

not the most elegant solution, but you can try 3 of these (+2 onboard PCI) if there is space to fit all the risers http://www.dx.com/p/pci-e-to-dual-pci-bus-slots-adapter-card-dual-port-usb-to-pci-mainboard-panel-set-black-blue-376620

The iFixit kits are pretty good for small electronics. People say quality isn't the best but I'm pretty happy with the tool selection.

    Best ~500GB SSD?

Sammy 960 Pro or Intel 750 (400GB since there's no 500GB) depending on who you ask.

Torn between 7700K or Ryzen 1700

I skimmed the thread. Can't directly comment on the bottleneck issue, but experience says that the GPU is the proper upgrade. I built my friend who is a die hard Battlefield player a similar system a few years back. It's a i5-4690K @ 4.4GHz so just barely faster than yours. Went from a GTX...

Why is my computer crashing when I use Excel, is it hardware or software?

That looks like excel 2010. I remember there were a few major under the hood upgrades for 2013 because when a friend of mine made the upgrade, there were no longer problems with handling more than a certain number of cell formats at once (the limit of unique formats per document was raised)...

    Hard drive disconnecting issue

Ah, that was pre-B3. I remember having to return a first gen P67 board to Newegg for the recall. Turnaround time was a full 1 month.

Do you have a reference link? I'm just curious. Or is this the pre-B3 stepping problem that had a recall?

Need a new SATA boot SSD. What's the current Gold standard?

Were those failures 840 Evos or 850 Evos? I know the 840 Evo has a bad rep, but havn't read much about 850 Evo failures. I thought the reliability of small node planar TLC in the 840 Evo was addressed with larger node 3D TLC in the 850 Evo. That said, my goto is the Intel 710 for SATA. It's...

    Build #8 [Let's do this]

If you're going into $200 territory on PSU you can do better. 750W-800W is already more than enough for your future SLI needs so step down the wattage and upgrade to a better series. Corsair's best is the AX (Seasonic OEM) and AXi (Flextronics) line so check the 760 and 860W versions of those...

    Build #8 [Let's do this]

Noctua's NT-H1 that comes with the cooler will outperform AS5. There are reports of Gelid GC Xtreme being the best but the difference is negligible from my experience.

    VR Capable Build

Interesting. I see where I had my limited info mixed up. I saw the 2160x1200 res on the Oculus and assumed 2160p (4K). So it's not much more than WUXGA aside from the supersampling requirements. Do you think a GTX 1060 would be sufficient once the new drivers are out?

    VR Capable Build

Not sure what you're getting at, but I've always been under the impression that VR was equivalent to 4K but on a much smaller display. If that's not the case, please enlighten me.

    VR Capable Build

They're not liars. For many people, 60fps is the minimum framerate to hit...I think 30-40fps is perceptible vs 60. What's wrong with SLI for VR? I thought Oculus supported Gsync?

How much better are the new processors compared to my i7 920?

Come to think of it, I think my wall was 3.8 or 3.9, not 3.6. But the chip has been long sold.

    Any pelican case builds/mods?

That would be a sweet build. You'd probably need some kind of support structure to keep the VGA in place though since the PCIe slot would be the weakest link if the case sustains impact.

    CPU Upgrade Question...

Keep in mind most modern games that demand graphical power also have large installation packages, so you may want to upgrade the SSD to a larger one.

    VR Capable Build

VR is going to need a 4K capable GPU and thus far a single GTX 1080 still can't make it to that level (60fps+) on most if not all titles, unless you're ok with hovering at 30fps or tuning down the details. You should check some benchmarks. 2x8GB RAM is more than enough for games. If you're...

    upgrades on an old build

SSD, double the RAM, and a good heatsink for OCing. Other than that, the CPU and VGA are plenty fine for 1080p gaming.

New build, kind of lost with what I need (platform)

If you have an upgrade itch with the money to spare, it's nice to upgrade the fans to quieter ones. Noiseblockers and Noctuas run 25$ a piece but they're well worth it if you value silence.

Need help with a laptop purchase.

Unfortunately I think the reality is that you will not find what you are looking for in your price range. You will also have to consider that the laptops may not come with a Windows license which will run $100 each on their own unless you have student discounts or university copies.

PC hard reboots in certain games within an hour, runs stress tests all night

I asked if it was a Gigabyte board because I struggled with a pretty mysterious problem with hard lockups (no BSOD) for 6 months. The only fix I stumbled upon was to disable C-states because I suspected there was something wrong with certain voltage transitions either thru the UEFI or on the...

New build & video editing software crawwwls

Admittedly I haven't video edited in a long time, but if your CONTENT is 1080p, your setup should have no trouble at all with it. Try running a graphical benchmark like Unigine Heaven and compare the result to what others have scored for the 970 just to check your VGA is performing as it should.

    Raid0 on NVMe - M.2

I'm surprised I missed that since Anand's articles are the ones I've followed most closely for many years, and I honestly don't know. I remember I couldn't find a definitive source for RAID1 TRIM support the last time I looked maybe about a year ago, and have since brushed it off as an...

    Identical monitors - mismatched color

Just to add, the Spyder5Pro can take ambient room light measurements into account and you can specify your own color temperature and gamma. The default recommended white point is far too bright for me so I just set the brightness/contrast I like on the monitor and let Spyder do its thing. If...

    Identical monitors - mismatched color

I use a Spyder5Pro. It creates an ICC profile which, if I understand correctly, is loaded into the video card for certain aspects of Windows and other color managed programs. I must have spent an aggregate of over 50 hrs over the last few years trying to understand why colors look different in...

New build as a reward for myself, and for showing off and bragging rights!

Well at this point, the Z270 boards are out so I would have to look them over. But I would have done things very differently. Off the top of my head... SSD - Intel 750 400GB, or 1.2TB with added cost as mentioned earlier Mobo - MSI MPower Titanium (something along that name, not sure if...

    Cas 14 vs Cas 16 DDR4

As a general rule of thumb for DDR4, shoot for a performance index of 2 (frequency/100 : CL) within your budget, or pay a few bucks more for >2. Keep in mind that RAM overclockability will also strongly depend on mobo UEFI compatibility and the CPU's IMC quality which will be a crap shoot.
