    Loud CPU fan on HTPC

I finally got a minute to pull out my old HTPC and look at it. See the pics below. The Noctua fan is a direct replacement. The screws (I'm pretty sure I used the old ones) screw right into the heat sink. And the power cable for the fan plugged right in. Zero issues during the swap. Let me know...

    IT Resume Thread

I've been at my current place 2 years, but they've recently made some changes and things are moving towards being more micro-managed. I'm not liking the direction things are headed. It's turning into a toxic work environment. Someone in our department was fired 2 weeks ago and another quit...

    16GB installed only 8GB usable

Well damn ... after googling a bit more I guess the max memory in WHS 2011 is 8GB. Kinda sucks, but answers my question.

    16GB installed only 8GB usable

I've been running my WHS 2011 server with 8GB of memory for a while, and everything has worked pretty good. My server is set up on a Lenovo Thinkcentre m93p with an Intel Core i5 3.30 GHz processor. I mainly use it to stream movies / TV shows to my FireTV's. But I just got my security camera...

Running network cable in 2 story home: Can I do it? Can you help?

I did this same thing to run coax & network cables from my basement to our 2nd floor and then continue a few runs up to the attic. Then the runs in the attic we were able to drop down the exterior walls into a few rooms. Worked like a charm!!!

    Help with SyncToy errors

I installed FreeFileSync this weekend. Took a little configuring, but I set it up to backup all of my network drives. I ran a mirror backup, saved the configuration and it finished without issues. I'm breathing a bit easier this morning with a backup of my server data on an external drive in...

    Help with SyncToy errors

A few weeks ago I picked up a WD 6TB drive to backup all of the media on my WHS 2011 server. My plan was to temporarily connect the drive to my desktop PC (after I do the backup I'll store the drive in my safe for a few months) until the next backup. I finally got around to running the backup...

Opinions on an APC Smart-UPS 1500VA UPS

Sounds good. I'll let them know that I'm gonna take it home!!! I will look at aftermarket batteries instead of getting them directly from APC. Any recommendations on decent brands / sellers, etc for aftermarket batteries like this??

Opinions on an APC Smart-UPS 1500VA UPS

We're getting rid of one of these at work and I have the opportunity to get it for free. I'm 95% sure it just needs a new battery. Just looking for some opinions on the UPS to see if it's worth it for pretty much the cost of a replacement battery. I would use it for backup power for my WHS...

Play Fire TV audio thru receiver

So ... a couple of weeks ago I was FINALLY able to pick up a 2nd FireTV for my living room. I cant believe that it took almost a year!!! And I'm happy to say, it was a nice easy swap. Like we talked about above, I plugged the FireTV into the TV's HDMI port and used an Amazon Basics optical...

Help with CrystalDiskInfo for my HD

Yep, after getting an explanation of the CrystalDiskInfo I agree that the HD wasn't causing the shutdown issues. But I think it was the cause of the slooooooow startup time. So we figured while we were working on things we'd just spend $100 and upgrade to a new WD Black HD and in the process...

Help with CrystalDiskInfo for my HD

Yep, he's got all his important data backed up to an external drive. Always the first step when we start looking into system issues. We did end up replacing the drive. It was the original 5400 rpm drive that came in the PC a few years ago. We figured why not completely eliminate the HD as...

Help with CrystalDiskInfo for my HD

My brother is having some PC problems. His PC takes forever (2-4 minutes) to fully boot up and recently it's been randomly shutting down. So he dropped it off yesterday for me to look at. First I cleaned a bunch of dust out of the case. Then I scanned for virus's (with Malwarebytes and...

    Lenovo ThinkCentre m92p SATA ports

So after a bit more searching around online, I found this. It appears that the Red SATA ports are SATA 3.0, the Orange SATA port is a SATA 2.0 and the Black (which is labeled as such) is an eSATA port. So does it make sense that it'd be best to keep my OS drive and the new HD drive that...

    Idiot check on Mushkin SSD

I'd still do the RMA. The drive may work for a bit and then have similar problems and you'll have to go thru the RMA process again at that point. You've already got it ready to be RMA'd. Do it and you wont have to worry if the issues will return.

    Lenovo ThinkCentre m92p SATA ports

I recently swapped a Lenovo ThinkCentre m92p motherboard into a CoolerMaster case to use as my WHS 2011 server. I added a Dell H200 6Gb/s Raid Controller card for the 4 server HD's. And I also used 2 of the SATA ports (SATA 1 and SATA 2) on the motherboard for the SSD OS drive and for the DVD...

Play Fire TV audio thru receiver

Yep, I'll definitely go with the Gen2 Fire TV. And only having to get an Optical Audio cable cheaper than buying a whole converter. It is also a simpler option, which is always good!!!

Play Fire TV audio thru receiver

You are correct gimp, I am looking to buy a Fire TV in the next couple of weeks, so I'll end up with a Gen2 model. Looking up info on them got me to thinking about how to connect everything ... thus this thread. Any thoughts on this??

Play Fire TV audio thru receiver

Ok, thanks for the info gimp!!! It seems pretty simple now, but just something that I've never used, so definitely appreciate your help. I currently switch from DTV/CBL (for audio for my cable) to MD/CD-R (for audio for my HTPC). So glad to know it'll stay that simple to change back and forth.

Play Fire TV audio thru receiver

Well damn!!! Ok, I see the Optical Audio Out on my TV now. Must have missed it because it's flush and has a cover on the port. And it's also good that the receiver has the Optical Audio In. So, I can do the "FireTV HDMI to TV, then optical out from TV to receiver", which makes things easier...

Play Fire TV audio thru receiver

Play Fire TV audio thru receiver

I have done a bit of googling on this, and I don't think that it's really that complicated, but I'd like to get some [H] opinions. I currently have a HTPC in our living room and a WDTV Live in our bedroom. I'd like to replace each of these units with an Amazon Fire TV box. The HTPC and WDTV...

Want to upgrade my WHS 2011 PC

Hey, just figured I'd stop back here and post a quick update after my server upgrade this past weekend. I came across this article last week: https://forums.servethehome.com/index.php?threads/moving-hds-to-new-whs-2011-build-after-motherboard-upgrade.12240/#post-117001 I followed the info in...

    Lenovo Thinkcentre m700 SFF pinout

I was able to power on the new PC. So the "orange and white wires to pins 1 / 2, the green and white wires to pins 6 / 8 and the blue and white wires to pins 10 / 12" was correct!! I haven't checked the font USB ports, but I'd assume that the info saying to use "pins 3 to 12 and leave pins 1...

    Lenovo Thinkcentre m700 SFF pinout

Ahhh, ok. You said you saw "info on the other side of the board" and I thought you meant on the underside, not the other end of the motherboard. I just looked over the motherboard again and don't see anything that looks like it would be pinout info.

I did check on the front of the board for any pinout info next to the pins and there's nothing listed. I already mounted the board in the Cooler Master case and I didn't check the back side of the board before getting it into the new case. If it comes down to it, I can take it out to look at...
