Max Payne 3: Creating a Cutting Edge Action-Shooter

This looks first class. Max Payne 1 & 2 are two of the most timeless games ever. The snowy level made me want to replay Max Payne again. Wonder if it's a flashback to the first game.

why are smart phones and tablets so slow rendering webpages?

pretty much. If you look at browser benchmarks like sunspider, phones and tablets are about 10 times slower than PCs. Code has a lot to do with it as well though, the latest ios 5 update made a dramatic improvement.

The closest I've come to violence is stamping the floor a bit when getting my ass kicked in a half life 2 deathmatch tournament .

Holy crap, it worked! Dead video card, resurrected!

Just tried the card in another PC and it works normally as far as I can tell. Strange. My PC works okay with the card I swapped from the other PC. So I dunno. :/

Holy crap, it worked! Dead video card, resurrected!

I've just done this with a 9800GTX which was getting severe corruption before crashing. This was when doing anything with 3D (even Windows Aero) or video playback (like youtube) It no longer has those problems, but it is however running games at half speed. Frame rate is literally half what it...

    Next Generation Console Hardware Update

It's not entirely impossible that they could include an Xbox 360 CPU/GPU package onboard like Sony did with PS2 hardware built in original PS3s. From what I understand, the 360 CPU/GPU is on one chip on the latest slim models. Actually, they might only need the CPU part if it's an AMD GPU...

    Next Generation Console Hardware Update

AMD Fusion makes perfect sense for a new console. They only have to pay one license fee, cheaper to manufacture, it's a single platform that is designed to work efficiently instead of bringing an IBM CPU and AMD GPU together to work in harmony etc etc

Crytek: 40 upcoming titles powered by CryEngine

Any competition for Unreal Engine 3 is a good thing IMO. Crytek overpromised with Crysis 2, boo hoo. Still doesn't take away from the fact that CE3 is probably still by far the most cutting edge and powerful engine out there, although Frostbite is looking rather incredible too.

    Original Crysis Coming to Consoles?

What he probably meant was, Crysis wasn't possible on consoles using Cryengine 2. Cryengine 3 has the necessary optimizations to make it possible. Console versions of Crysis 2 stream all the map data etc. On the PC the whole map is loaded into RAM at once.

    Duke Nukem Forever review

My thoughts having now finished the game... It's a 5 or 6/10. Some reviews that scored lower were far too harsh, full of fake moral indignation and venom that was just either unwarranted or just missing the point. I'm glad Gearbox got it out, I really did want to play it for a long time...

Negative DNF Reviews Lead to PR Blacklist?

Some of the reviews have been way, way too hard on Duke. It's not a very good game, but it's not as terrible as some would have you believe. To be honest I've had more fun playing it than any Call of Duty lately. Some reviewers (who need to get over themselves) just seem to have taken it upon...

    Duke Nuke Em Demo

Demo was a bit disappointing as it's the same as the one that was demoed last year, so I'd already seen videos and read previews of it all. Graphics are unimpressive and rather inconsistent in terms of quality, but I already knew what to expect. They do the job. I think it's a pity that a lot...

Was John Carmack a really good programmer or...

Just to add to this: http://www.confettispecialfx.com/rawk%C2%AE-graphics-demo-for-sandy-bridge I predict that Valve are making some Sandy Bridge-specific optimizations to Source, hence their hiring of an optimization guru who has worked on GPUs at Intel :)
  24. M

Was John Carmack a really good programmer or...

I don't think it's a coincidence that he was responsible for Intel's Larrabee architecture, and Valve have been praising Sandy Bridge's GPU design lately.

Yep, but stuff that simulates all the facial muscles and skin wrinkling etc is probably quite CPU intensive.

    Now THIS Is Facial Animation!

Probably the most convincing facial animation tech using traditional motion capture. Wonder if we'll see a realtime approximation of it anytime soon. Until then, the technique used in LA Noire might be a better way (and would probably look much better on a PC)

    FEAR expansions vs FEAR 2

FEAR 2 was far better than the expansions IMO. Extraction Point was okay apart from totally ruining the story. Perseus Mandate just sucked. There's also a standalone expansion for FEAR 2 which is supposed to be alright, haven't checked it out. As far as story continuity is concerned, doesn't...

Valve: no new engine anytime soon

Apparently most of you can't read. What Valve actually said is that they are going to continue to develop and improve Source, just like they have been doing for the last 7 years (see http://www.valvesoftware.com/company/publications.html). People calling it a 2004 engine need to get a clue, and...
