Looking for something like the J5040-ITX, but available now

Here's an update for your interest. I decided to install an LSI 9211-8i HBA in IT mode, which will control the 4x 2TB HGST drives. For the OS (and /var/lib/unifi-video MongoDB database) I decided to get a single Kingston DC500M 480GB SSD, which is an enterprise drive that has PLP. It will be...

How can I change F@H power level based on idle?

OK, I wasn't aware that WUs couldn't always resume from where they left off. Is this also the case when using the pause/resume buttons as well, or is it just to do with the power level switching? Ideally, the software would run in Medium until it became idle, and then it will wait until the...

How can I change F@H power level based on idle?

I want to fold at "medium" when I am using my computer, and at "full" when it is idle. I can't see a way to do that?

Looking for something like the J5040-ITX, but available now

I went ahead and just got the J5005-ITX, as far as I can tell the board itself will be essentially the same, and the difference will just be in the refreshed CPU. In any case, it's lightyears ahead of the D2550 that is in the stock NVR.

Looking for something like the J5040-ITX, but available now

Possibly, but I have to keep in mind the TDP because this is going in a very small 4-bay cube case from supermicro, which only has one fan. I don't want to push it too high and affect stability, which is why I was targeting newer/more efficient stuff. Like I said, I honestly don't know how to...

Looking for something like the J5040-ITX, but available now

Yes, thanks for pointing me in that direction. Although their site kind of sucks, I've discovered some interesting embedded AMD options, some of which have a PCIe slot that I could use an HBA on. https://www.asrockind.com/overview.asp?Model=IMB-V1000...

Looking for something like the J5040-ITX, but available now

Interesting board - not sure how that SoC compares to the J5005 or J5040? However, it has only 2x SATA ports and no expansion for me to add an HBA card.

Looking for something like the J5040-ITX, but available now

Yeah, not only is it fairly old, but it seems to be out of stock lately. Problem is, I don't really know my low-end parts that well, so I'm having a hard time doing comparisions.

Looking for something like the J5040-ITX, but available now

Anyone? I know the board I mentioned above is only 10 watts, but I can probably go as high as 40 watts or so without having cooling issues in my chassis.

Looking for something like the J5040-ITX, but available now

I really want to build my new NVR/NAS box using the Asrock J5040-ITX board, but it hasn't been released yet. Can you guys help me find the next best option that would have equivalent or better performance without breaking the bank? I'm less concerned about the power draw, but keeping it low...

What RAID to use for a new NVR/NAS combo?

Protect does lock you into their hardware as far as the NVR goes, but the old Video platform, while not very maintained, is still available for custom server builds. Thanks for the input, much appreciated. The randomness was what I was concerned about. At this point, I'm thinking RAID 10 for...

What RAID to use for a new NVR/NAS combo?

This is going to be for a commercial UniFi Video setup, so I can't run on a pre baked NAS OS. I have used their Atom-based NVR with its 2TB 2.5" drive, and it had lackluster performance when dealing with more than about 15 cameras. The NAS actually won't need a lot of space, I might allocate...

Best 4-bay hotswap case for NVR/NAS?

Thanks guys, good note about the PSU. Now to see what kind of screaming deal I can find on the supermicro case - next I need to figure out what to put in it. Maybe I'll post in another section about that, wish asrock would have released their j5040 board already.

Best 4-bay hotswap case for NVR/NAS?

I'd like to spend less than $200 on the case. My overall budget is $1200-1500 including 4x 4TB storage drives, but less is better.

Best 4-bay hotswap case for NVR/NAS?

I'm looking to build an NVR/NAS setup, and I want to get either a short-depth 4-bay 1U chassis or a mini-ITX cube formfactor for it. There seems to be many options, but with a wide range of prices and potential issues. I've been looking in particular at cases from Chenbro, Supermicro, and Norco...

What RAID to use for a new NVR/NAS combo?

I'm building a new NVR that will also do some light NAS duties. Obviously this is a write-intensive application, but I also need decent seek performance for playback. I want to build a 4-bay hotswap setup, and I would like to know what you guys recommend for the RAID type? I've heard of a few...

    Need recommendation on replacement laptop

I've decided on an HP EliteBook 830 G5. The main limitation is that it does not have an SD card slot, but I guess I can live with using an adapter for that. It has a barrel charge port, however it is also able to charge via USB-C, which gives me 2 options in case one breaks. It has pretty much...

    Need recommendation on replacement laptop

Thanks for the suggestions. I'm not trying to stick to a particular budget like under $1k or whatever. The UX331UN appears to have the same terrible power connector that I'm trying to avoid from my current laptop. Same with some of the others. Is USB-C durable enough for this? I see many laptops...

    Need recommendation on replacement laptop

I've got a few specific features that I need, but they aren't usually the sort of things that you can 'filter by' when searching manufacturers' websites for new machines. I'm replacing an awesome Asus UX32VD ultrabook because it has one main bad problem - the charge port has gone bad for the...

Fanless firewall based on Astaro/Sophos UTM

Ended up buying the SG 105. Might replace the spinner with an SSD, will see how quick it fills up when I enable statistics on web usage.

Fanless firewall based on Astaro/Sophos UTM

I don't really have any parts on hand that would be suitable for a small fanless build. From what I've been seeing, I may not be able to get what I want unless I go with the pre-packaged solution. It comes with a little current gen atom, 320 GB drive, 2 GB ram, VGA port, and at least 4 network...

Fanless firewall based on Astaro/Sophos UTM

I'm looking to save on some hardware, and was hoping someone might be able to suggest a solution. Right now the cheapest I can find for the SG105 appliance is about $350, although for that price you do get a very capable machine. I'm hoping the folks here might be able to help me pick out a...

Flash-backed RAID cards - consumer level?

I'll definitely keep it in mind for my next build which will hopefully be a few years down the road. For now, I have disabled "Anti-Surge Protection" in the BIOS of my Maximus VI Impact, enabled buffer flushing, and switched from Write-back to Write-through. Hopefully this will prevent any more...

Flash-backed RAID cards - consumer level?

NVM I see you said P3500 which has not been released yet; I was looking at the P3600. Any pricing/availability dates for the P3500?

Flash-backed RAID cards - consumer level?

Good point about the PCIe option. I guess a bigger build would be in order anyways, since I have only one slot now. I like having a tiny box of power that blows all the big stuff out of the water. However the PCIe option is top-tier, and Intel sure likes to show that off with their pricing. I...

Flash-backed RAID cards - consumer level?

I figured that I couldn't really go wrong with just about any LSI card, and CacheVault would be the answer. I'll have to see if i can find something at a good price. Interesting point about the SSDs, I didn't even know that that was a consideration. Are there any other (cheaper) options that...

Flash-backed RAID cards - consumer level?

Hey guys, I recently suffered a failure on my SSD RAID 0 that likely wouldn't have been as bad if I would have had a RAID card with some kind of BBU. Currently, I'm just running off my consumer level ASUS mobo and I had write-back caching enabled and buffer flushing turned off. My bad. What I...

Fastest possible video card in smallest possible space

I actually did a small build in an SG-07 already, and I wanna try something even smaller. But I don't want to use shitty SFF PSUs and single slot cards, so I picked the 110. Only reason I'm getting the big ass PSU is because it's the same price as the 600w variant, and PSUs are most efficient...

Fastest possible video card in smallest possible space

Looks like Newegg and Amazon only have pre-orders that ship at the very end of February, so the 250d is out. I'll stick to the tiny case and have fun cramming it together.

I've finalized my requirements and put everything in this wish list: http://secure.newegg.com/WishList/PublicWishDetail.aspx?WishListNumber=29469847 Thanks for all the help and suggestions. I'm going with the 760.

LOL that thing is definitely not going to fit, at least not if I want to use the HDD bays above the video card.

Storage recommendations for my Mini-ITX build

Where I would benefit from high sequential read/write is when I am modifying WIM files for my custom deployments. Mounting and unmounting WIM files takes a bit of speed, as does copying them - 5+ GB for each file.

Storage recommendations for my Mini-ITX build

I've decided to go with 840 Pro drives, because I don't think the EVO suits my taste with only a 3 year warranty. The biggest Pro is a 512, so RAID 0 would get me some more space and better sequential read/write. I found http://www.genie9.com/business/genie_timeline_pro/buy.aspx for backup...

Storage recommendations for my Mini-ITX build

Do only the Intel SSDs support TRIM while in RAID? Are there any good backup solutions that will check for modifications every few minutes and copy them to the HDDs? I can then back the HDDs up to the internet and to my NAS. Currently, Mozy backs up my SSD, but I'm thinking I want something a...

Storage recommendations for my Mini-ITX build

I was thinking SSD RAID, but I don't know how well modern SSDs will tolerate RAID with no TRIM. I could do a RAID 10 with slower SSDs for data protection and speed, or I could do RAID 1 with really fast SSDs for just data protection, and then add a pair of 3.5" HDDs for bulk storage.

Fastest possible video card in smallest possible space

Yep, 210mm isn't a whole lot to play with. I don't usually look too closely at the "lower end" GPUs, but I have to in order to build this, so I'm not up to speed on why a 670 might be better. Could you elaborate? Is it faster, or easier to overclock, or better supported?

Storage recommendations for my Mini-ITX build

Nah not a storage server, this is going to be my daily driver. Right now I have a single 256GB Crucial C300 (the first SSD with 6gbps  :D) and it's pretty full, but most of my storage lives on my NAS box (ISOs and whatever). I want raw performance.
