Windows 11 available on October 5

Think I've only installed using a CD or mounting an .ISO file. Guess that is why it always installs in MBR. Remember when the USB booting started and it did UEFI or some such. Never messed with it. Now that I've found an easy way to change MBR to GPT after installing Windows, figure I'll...

Windows 11 available on October 5

The 7700k was released only 1 quarter before the 7900x so not sure what the difference is. And other 7700 versions have now made the list. The accepted CPU list by MS has a sort of spongy floor. Back in June or so, the list was pretty limited--7900x not on it-- by mid-August more CPUs were...

Windows 11 available on October 5

I don't ever recalling Windows asking how I wanted to install it--using MBR or GPT--maybe I just missed. Anyhow, changing it seemed like a daunting task. Searched around and found the simplest way. Did this before upgrading to W11. Converting MBR to GPT in an existing install of Windows 10...

Windows 11 available on October 5

Microsoft has re-released the PC Health Check app. Check to see if your hardware can run Windows 11. After updating BIOS, GPT, secure boot and such, it said my hardware could run Windows 11. Also confirmed by a third-party app. Downloaded 11 and installed. Played with it for a time but...

Jeff Bezos to Shoot Himself Into Space

Keep thinking of the Wright Brothers; lot of these same sentiments said about their endeavors. They didn't hire other people to fly their prototype--and look where we are today. Just history repeating itself once again. And with a lot more money involved.

How can I remove this "view" kinda hard to explain, but look at pic please...

I think there is no simple way to disable the header. The attached link is one of the ways people have found but it seems like a lot of work. Some say all MS wants you to do is set Bing as your default search engine and the header goes away. Also something about pressing F11 to toggle it. I...

Help me decide on a low end monitor

My vote is for the 32" Acer. Wouldn't go smaller than at least 32" for 4K. I use 32" 4K and my old eyes don't thank me very often for that. Things are a bit sharper but also smaller. The 1440p IPS is sort of a sweet spot for monitors right now. Unless you want to spend the really big bucks...

Build myself or use a system builder?

Certainly I suggest building yourself if parts can be had. That is the kicker at this particular time in history. Otherwise, have always been impressed with: Not sure they are the best or cheapest but their website is full of information and gives...

    Nvidia rtx 3090 discussion

Got a PNY 3090. That is my goto brand when all else fails. Think this is the third/fourth PNY I've used. Do lots of folding@home and it runs cool compared to 19 threads of the CPU running at full git! (one thread is reserved for the GPU) Kept hearing all this noise and thought it was the...

    Who is buying a 3090?

Tired out of waiting and paid through the nose a while back for a 3090 off Amazon. Kept watching the prices go up $100/week or more and decided to jump in. Would have been smart to jump a couple of months sooner! Have lived long enough to witness trends in hobbies and other things--cars...

    new build - the basics

Not sure your budget so knowing that could change things. Agree with BlueLineSwinger on the overclockable processor. And LGA1151 socket is EOL for Intel. LGA 1200 would offer an upgrade path for later. For now maybe an i7 10700 processor (c.$350) which adds more threads than the 9700 for...

Missing Gpu cable for Nvidia Titan V / Geforce GTX 1080

If the PCIe cables are indeed missing could Hematite not use molex to PCIe or Sata to PCIe for connecting the graphics card? Hoping at least one or two of those cables are still with the power supply.

I've used two PNY cards; a GTX 580 and the current card in the system 1080Ti. Both times, PNY was the only source for new releases after the initial supplies ran out--will certainly consider them this time round as well. Never a problem with either card.

    1809 update constant restarting

Trust me, 1809 was borked from the get-go. Think I finally had to use the Update Assistant to get it to take--either on laptop or desktop--don't recall which now. These semi-annual updates are a bit much--always break the way things are set up or undo some settings. Detest having to go...

    1809 update constant restarting

Radeon VII Gets Pro Driver Support

This is more in line with what I had hoped for Radeon VII--a workhorse and beast that would do compute, AR and graphics design for way less than a professional graphics card--yes, the poor man's Titan if you will--with most of the guts of the card dedicated to the processing and not to RTX, DLSS...
