What to do with a really old laptop ?

I would hook it up to a 100Hz CRT and a good mouse, and use it to play Quake 3 during family LAN parties. That's what I do with my 10 year old laptop when the whole clan wants to get in on it.

Intel Iris Xe DG1 Graphics Card Review [Gamer Nexus]

It's kinda weird to be talking about a brand new GPU that can get beaten senseless by a 7 year old 750ti.

So I finally tried a couple of AIOs...

Tech Jesus does a good job. I also thought the EK looked very robust internally, except for the signs of corrosion (?) that were present in his sample. I would like to get my hands on one personally, but buying, testing, and returning is not really my MO. Just to add some more data, in terms...

So I finally tried a couple of AIOs...

The conclusion I drew from this experiment is that the crossover point at which decibel for decibel, watt for watt, degree Celsius for degree Celsius, an AIO and a large dual-tower air cooler are on equal footing must be at around the 240mm radiator size. At that size, I would expect whichever...

3dB=twice as much acoustic energy, 10dB = twice the perceived loudness (except at the lower and higher ends of the spectrum, where it tapers to more like 6dB = sounds twice as loud.

I see the GTX1650 Super isn't going to be restocked; what then will be the equivalent?

Wow, I have to stop posting before having my morning coffee.

GTX 960 (slightly slower) RX 470 (very close) RX 570 (slightly faster) RX 480 (faster) GTX 970 (faster) RX 580 / GTX 980 / GTX 1060 / GTX 1650 Super (much faster)

So I finally tried a couple of AIOs...

I think the fans account for most of the differences among them. I don't think there is too much variation in pump output, but I suspect the EK might be a smidge more than the rest. Any other variation is probably going vary with how the individual cold plate mates with the individual CPU. I...

So I finally tried a couple of AIOs...

Thank you. I have dropped a temperature probe in there before, and the air entering the heat sink or radiator tends to run no more than 1C above ambient under heavy CPU load. Under a heavy GPU load, this increases to about 4C, since even blower cards dissipate some heat through their PCBs. I...

It would be good if it came with a 5-year warranty on the cooler, like the average retail AIO does.

    best long lasting thermal compound?

haha, heat gun and IR thermometer sounds like better plan. I'll try it on my 5820K or my crappier 5960X first.

    best long lasting thermal compound?

Yeah, that is true. Core #3 (or #2 depending on how you number them) is a real PITA. Every time I improve my cooling, it improves by less than the others. It's also the first one to crap out if I'm testing an overclock. Maybe I should throw this chip in my toaster oven and try to reflow the...

It should do fine with the front fans as intakes, but with a case that big I would probably want a 420mm mounted on top.

    best long lasting thermal compound?

Yep, exactly 24.5, I just ran these tests back to back. One thing that is possible is that this stuff might need some time to cure. The MX-4 was on there for most of a day, while the MX-5 was just applied. My idle temps already look a touch lower in a very unscientific anecdotal way.

    best long lasting thermal compound?

Your MX-4 must have been old. I just tried MX-5, tested the same way I did last night for the AIOs (Prime 26.6, small FFT, 5960X at 4.2GHz/1.18V). Ambient is 24.5C MX-4 Average Cores: 57.5, 56.4, 63.6, 59.5, 61.0, 59.6, 60.6, 57.5 Average Steady State Package Temp: 63.6 MX-5 Average Cores...

It would, and that 970 heat sink doesn't look adequate.

"Safe?" overclock and undervolt of a i73970x

A replacement chip will run you about $150, so it's up to you whether or not to let the dog off the leash. For a 32nm chip, I don't think those voltages are particularly risky anyway.

So I finally tried a couple of AIOs...

Yeah, I'm liking this EVGA. This is the third one I bought, but it's the first one I actually threw in my own machine. The Arctic is a nice enough unit, but the reason it's topping all the charts is because the P14 PWM fans it comes with are friggen great. Very, very quiet and awesome static...

    best long lasting thermal compound?

I got the best results ever when I ran out of paste and had to scrape my empty tubes and mix it all together. A mixture of cooler master bundled stuff, TG kryonaut, and phanteks bundled stuff. It took me almost 30 minutes to spread it on a big Haswell-E IHS because I had so little of it in...

And they actually did beat my air cooler. Due to me not being able to make up my mind and trying unsuccessfully to cancel an order on Amazon, I ended up with 2 AIOs on my front porch. An Arctic Liquid Freezer II 280 and an EVGA CLC 280. Naturally I had to figure out which one was better. I...

Help me with my wild 5800x please

If the radiator is setup as an exhaust, your CPU runs warmer, but your GPU and other components run cooler. Which way is better overall is case specific.

Help me with my wild 5800x please

If the fans are spinning up when they should, then I would try to remount the cooler. I don't own one myself, but I setup a 5800X for a family member with a 280mm AIO (EVGA) and it got to around 73 after one run of Cinebench R20 with a 4.7GHz/1.3V static OC. It would have probably climbed up...

I know, and I get it. It's widespread, and it's well within the rights of the company. On the same token, it's my right not to celebrate or reward the practice. NVidia appears to be selling more GPUs than ever for more money than ever. Now they are creating segmentation, ostensibly in order...

That's really cool, I guess I hand down computer parts in age order too. My 7 year old is the one actually using the 960 (so I guess it's not really a spare afterall).

Cooling advice needed please - 5900x/3090 system

Then your temps are normal. They go up and down with the ambient degree for degree. If you install the extra fans, that will probably drop you another 5C give or take. Either way, they are not dangerously high.
