    Picking a home router

DDWRT has been a pile of dung living off of its history running on the Lunksys WRT54G for over a decade. If you'd like to migrate into this decade, look at any of the superior forks such as Shibby Tomato the supported hardware for shibby's tomato is here: http://tomato.groov.pl/?page_id=69...

    ESXi vCPUs multiprocessor limits?

The accuracy of the info here for VMware and ESXi is all over the place. So let to throw in my 2 cents... vCPU allocation has changed in the past couple of versions of ESXI. The latest best practice for ESXi 6.5 is to NOT touch cores and to allocate sockets only. ESXI 6.5 doesn't do what...

    Server load problem

See if you can load the entire MySQL db into cache. 160MB is nothing. That should be an easy change and should removed some read latency and CPU overhead. It may also cause your CPU to be driven higher, but your resulting performance should scale linearly as well. After that you really...

    Server load problem

So you're entire instance is running within 1GB of RAM? That doesn't make sense. With that small of a database you could load the entire db into cache and have few fetches outside of updates. It makes me wonder what else is going on. What processes are eating so much CPU?

    Server load problem

How many CPU cycles are you consuming peak? How many CPU cycles are you consuming avg. during your high load period? How large is the database, your web page is reading from? How much of your current storage is being consumed? What's the RAM usage of your instance look like under load? I...

Intel NIC settings...a tweak too far?

I'm not going to argue if you should enable jumbo frames, as you'll probably not get out of it what you are looking for. But operationally the proof is in the testing. Assuming QOS or VLAN tagging it not involved did you test at 1500, 4000 and 9000? Did you enable and match the maximum frame...

VM with passthrough "freezes" entire ESXi box when shutdown/rebooting guest

You should look into the various options of implementing vSGA verses vDGA and vGPU. VMware convienently only tells you about it in the Horizon documentation but there's nothing stopping you from using it without horizon licensing. You'd have to load the VIB manually as well.

Intel NIC settings...a tweak too far?

........And that would be because something in your networking chain does not support Jumbo Frames or at least the frame size you selected.

WiFi Woes - Cannot Seem To Get Whole House Covered

You are not mistaken, it is completely possible to that your setup works that way you suggest..and it should. But your comments do not conflict with that fact that in the end the client controls what AP it decides to connect to. Wireless is complex. To anyone that doesn't understand the...

Streaming Exclusivity Wars Risk Driving Users Back to Piracy

I think it may be partially about the price. If service A allows me to watch so many hours of content for X number of dollars, I might be willing to pay for it. Example: CBS drops the price to $1.99 enables live streaming and offers 7 hours of non live content a week. I might buy into...

Running a cable from the existing router/AP to a single Ubiquiti UAP-AC-LR, ceiling mounted centrally on the 2nd floor, with the output power turned down should provide magnitudes better coverage for the 1st and 2nd floor. Those of you with Ubiquiti - Are you as frustrated as I am?

I believe this is a newer issue, new since firmware 1.9.x That's 1 reason my ER-PoE was running 1.8.5. Supposedly there's a hotfix 4 in alpha for 1.9.7, but they want to hold on to it for 1.9.10 or 1.9.11. You may be able to downgrade to 1.8.5 and retest, but please make certain you...

Those of you with Ubiquiti - Are you as frustrated as I am?

Yes. You just jogged my memory. There's a known issue where the ER will not update it's DHCP address until the lease time has expired or you restart the Router. There's a dependency on DNS that's also contributing to this issue.

Those of you with Ubiquiti - Are you as frustrated as I am?

I owned a ER-PoE it's basically a ERL with a 3 port switch chip added on. Things go wrong very fast when you try to route across the switch ports, treat the collection of 3 ports like they are one route and things are fine, try to route between those ports and you'll see CPU go up and...

Those of you with Ubiquiti - Are you as frustrated as I am?

Ubiquiti's stance is their products are inexpensive enough to have spares. It's a valid line of thinking, but I agree that is not comforting when the spare has not been kept up to date and you've been tasked with restoring services.

Those of you with Ubiquiti - Are you as frustrated as I am?

DHCP is either reserved or not. DNS is either static or populated by the client It kind of sounds like you were using DHCP and then created reservations for your machines. Then you did not either force or update DNS registration or restart the router, leading to the condition you saw.

    Fixing Unifi AP performance

If your DTIM was set to 1 and you had 1 issue, and changed it to 3...that issue went away and a new one appeared, a DTIM of 2 might be an option. But if 1 doesn't fix it, and 3 still doesn't fix that issue. a value of 2 will probably not give you the result what you are looking for.

For some users a value of 1 will fix their issues, some other 3. It's completely possible you end up discovering that a value of 2 works for your environment. My goal was to let you know the new installation default value is now a DTIM of 3, and that a DTIM value of 1 resolves some issues...
