Paranoid fire/gas/motion alarm system based on a ESP8266

Well, I assembled the thing. I picked a much too small of an enclosure, so despite my best efforts, it does resemble an IED and not an appliance. I'll produce a wiring diagram in a few days. Code will be dropped later, I have to translate it.

Intel CPU cooler is a steaming POS

No reason to use them anymore in my opinion. There's a lot of inexpensive, better performing solutions that even carry over to new platforms. I hate them for the obvious flaws, but a big one is low tolerance to bumps/vibration when you transport a system. One will usually pop back out and...

Paranoid fire/gas/motion alarm system based on a ESP8266

Still waiting on that GSM module... E-mail notification is almost done, though. I don't like the idea of this, as e-mail is definitely not 100% reliable. The board I picked has some irritating design issues. Some outputs/inputs are double purpose and routed weird. Here's an al-quaeda quality...

Looking for headphones with removable cord

Well, I know this doesn't answer your question directly, but I'd re-consider this. A detachable cord can be changed, true, but the plug and socket are actually another potential failure point. It's very easy to replace the cord in any headphones, and you can even choose a thicker/thinner...

Is using 10-years old power supplies a concern?

About that PC P&C I'm surprised it works well for slightly another reason - if you look at the rails' spec, it's rated at 40A on the 5V rail, and "only" 34A on the 12V one. Stuff beyond K7 normally didn't need 5V as much as they relied on the 12V regulator.

Windows Sonic for Headphones: better on or off?

I don't use anything for headphones. Well, I do have the Realtek/Aorus equalizer set to slightly lower 20-200 hz due to Gigabyte forcing too high of a bass level (distortion city). I also like the Loudness equalizer in 10. I've been using a feature like this to compress dynamic range ever since...

I'm not going to buy a GPU with a hash limiter

I had no idea about that one, aside maybe from that currency that uses storage. Either way sounds like something I'd start with once I get around to studying the topic.

I'm not going to buy a GPU with a hash limiter

I guess in a way, cryptocurrency is ahead of its time. Art and paper money also have 'agreed upon' value and they are not as useful when SHTF and, say, the grid fails. They can be counterfeited, so there's that. I would probably support the idea if we finally got ITER to successfully ignite :D

I'm not going to buy a GPU with a hash limiter

My thoughts exactly. I get that it can't be counterfeited, can be verified, and has 'a value' that involved parties agreed on. But why like this?

AMD AGESA 1.2.0.1 BIOS Firmware Tested

This is about AMD bios issues, so I thought I'd throw it in here. Guys, what are your observations when measuring the actual voltage provided via USB? Asking because I'm seeing around 4.75 V when it's powering a small load (microcontroller equipped with its own bus voltage meter, consuming 1-2...

I'm not going to buy a GPU with a hash limiter

My issue with crypto is simply the amount of power it consumes. I don't pretend to know economics. I don't understand the blockchain and I haven't yet desired to learn about it. Power, though, is an issue. There are no nuclear power plants where I live and I don't (yet) have solar power - it...

    Opinions on IoT...

It would be a huge wall of text if I tried to explain, so tldr: I don't and won't use it. Short explanation: I don't take electricity for granted. I'm in an area that will most likely in my lifetime become a front line. When that happens, you can't really count on Internet access and power...

No one ever did this yet? Use Lumilor paint on a case?

I did consider something similar, electroluminescent, layered 'stickers' that you can design yourself and they light up various colors. Hell, you could probably make it display something useful like temps, but there are two hurdles: - it's a bit involved, difficult to make and easy to damage...

Paranoid fire/gas/motion alarm system based on a ESP8266

1st of May - decided to drop the motion detection portion - no point in trying to have it do everything. Complexity/parts count/power. - decided to drop IR-diode/photo-transistor smoke detection: a ready-made sensor is surprisingly costly and also real estate issues. Might re-think after...

Okay I've just noticed the USB issue. I disconnected a microcontroller board and USB went away for 10 seconds, all ports. Ports seem to have been powered, though, because my USB powered devices did not cut out. Mobo is Gigabyte Aorus A520 elite, currently running BIOS v F13g which includes "AMD...

motherboard only has 3 audio outputs but apparently supports 8 channels - does a PCI bracket or case extension exist?

Like BlackDragon said, many audio controllers re-purpose their connectors. On my Aorus board, the line-in is actually a secondary output (in this case, duplicated front stereo-out). However not all connectors can act as other connectors, and in my case the line-in-as-output feature wasn't stated...

Figured some of the old timers would appreciate this workhorse

I have a small bag of Coppermine P3s. Including the 1GHz model. I really liked the P3 and once bought a retro dual ASUS CUV4X-DLS. Was actually deciding between that and the VP6 mentioned above. Installed a pair of P3 - 800EB energy efficient ones, downclocked them to 400 MHz and they just sat...

    Crackling/whirring noise from SSD?

It's actually a common problem and can get really annoying when you take your laptop to show off some presentation and hook it up to a projector/sound system via VGA+analog audio. It's not the SSD's fault per se, the laptop should be considered as a whole. A component in the voltage regulation...

Paranoid fire/gas/motion alarm system based on a ESP8266

I'm considering dropping the IR diode - phototransistor mode of smoke detection, and motion sensor in favor of adding a GSM module to send texts when an alarm is raised. Reason for this decision would be component count, which adds to complexity, which usually reduces stability of any device...

How to create Netfilter IPTables script for UniFi Dream Machine / Secure Gateway?

Sorry, I'm not qualified about networking that happens beyond the router. I'm guessing - first guy to see your traffic is the ISP and they might have simply blocked traffic meant for broadcast or even other typical signatures of malicious activity. Regarding LAN IP -> Router WAN IP traffic -...

How to create Netfilter IPTables script for UniFi Dream Machine / Secure Gateway?

Good to hear. Well, it's actually possible that the commands you'd like to have are there, but their location is not added to the $PATH environment variable, which tells the shell (you are in a shell whenever you SSH) where to look for stuff. IIRC you can use, for example, whereis some_command...

    Am I just lucky?

Do you mean - problems with hardware, or problems with Windows 10, or problems with using certain hardware on said system? I don't really have problems with hardware most of the time as well. I don't know why. I've had a GT210 die in a random computer in my house and that's it for the decade...

How to create Netfilter IPTables script for UniFi Dream Machine / Secure Gateway?

In order to make it executable by anyone, you'd want to do: chmod 755 some_script.sh It will equate to read/write/execute by root and read/execute by others. Now, about the SH file, aside from the #!/bin/sh shebang at the top, quite honestly there is no 'format'. Whatever you can call during...

Yes, executing it after a reboot, but have the device itself call this command on its own during startup, with the rules file on the device. I was thinking place the rules file where they say scripts should reside (/mnt/data/on_boot.d), with the only additional scripting which should be...
