Why are graphic cards without a shroud bad?

I hear that graphics cards in pre-built PCs aren't as good as ones that have a shroud, but why is that? And why don't they have shrouds then?

Awesome! I wish I would have known about this a long time ago. Thought I was stuck with having to use the installer on the drive. Thank you!

How to re-install OS without pre-installed garbage?

I believe if I restore Windows 7 from the installer image on the drive that it will delete all the files on my drive. If I borrow a legitimate Windows 7 DVD, can I use my current CD key to re-install just the OS without all the pre-installed garbage and losing all my files?

Is a hard drive a computer?

It looks like drives are going to be even more like a computer. Seagate is coming out with drives that use a direct Ethernet connection instead of something like SATA. http://www.theregister.co.uk/2013/10/22/seagate_letting_apps_talk_direct_to_drives/

Shrunk a partition and got 2 unallocated

What is going on? I merged the main partition and the 230GB partition, but that 746GB partition is unusable. I can't create a partition out of it, or merge it with the main partition.

Shrunk a partition and got 2 unallocated

I shrunk a partition and expected to have one partition and another unallocated. Instead I have one partition and TWO unallocated. For some reason it divided the unallocated partition into two random size partitions. One of the unallocated is 230GB the other is 746GB. I can create a...

I need a SATA to SATA and LP4 adapter

Actually, that's an idea. I picked out what seems to be by far the most popular card and got focused on that. Does anyone know of a good USB 3.0 Low Profile card that can use SATA power?

I need a SATA to SATA and LP4 adapter

Could I take the SATA power from my DVD player, and connect it to this StarTech.com PYO2SATA 6in SATA Power Y Splitter Cable Adapter - M/F Then connect one SATA power end to my DVD player, then the other to this Sata to LP4 15 Pin Power Adapter Then the LP4 to the Anker® Uspeed PCI-E to...

I need a SATA to SATA and LP4 adapter

I need a USB 3.0 card that has a 4 pin molex connection, but I don't have any available power connectors. So I think need something like a SATA male to SATA female and LP4 female cable. I've searched and can't find what I need. Does it even exist?

I can understand that reasoning, but I don't think that's an "official" requirement of a computer.

Is a hard drive a computer?

Here's a guy who hacked the firmware of a hard drive to get it to do something else, similar to how people hacked the consumer grade routers you mentioned. Attacker breaks into computer, updates the firmware and if the admin wipes the drive and reinstalls the OS, the attacker can still get...

Is a hard drive a computer?

Apparently the WD color drives are the same drive, but with a different OS that gives it different abilities. If WD gave us the ability to choose which firmware we wanted to put on it, or we could put open source firmware on it, would that make it a computer? A lot of people view routers as...

Is a hard drive a computer?

You, the software, and the OS control the drive, your control is limited. It has all the components of an computer. Look at the Rpi. Why is that a computer? Because it can run a major OS like Linux? The computer and OS are two different things. BTW you can interact with the OS on the...

Is a hard drive a computer?

It's not a computer within a computer, or a different kind of computer? Technically a computer is useless all by itself too. They both have different requirements.

RAID seems like a real pain.

Yes, my Seagate needs to be RMAd, which is the reason for the whole thread. :o I need some USB 3.0 ports to connect the 4 bay enclosure, but I noticed some of the PCIe 1x cards require more power from SATA for some reason. I'm not going to need that if my 4 bay enclosure already has a...

    Western Garbage Green

Thanks, sub.mesa also mentions that 8 seconds might be too often to park and suggested it should have been every 2 minutes. Apparently most drives are made for around 300,000 parks and you can easily go over that with one every 8 seconds. Why are people disabling parking instead of switching...

    Western Garbage Green

That probably is a big reason why drives are failing. I need to RMA my 3TB Seagate Expansion so I need a new drive now and can't tell which one I should get. When you consider people: 1. Are putting the drives in different situations. 2. People write reviews too soon before really...

RAID seems like a real pain.

Yeah, that helps a lot, thanks! About the esata port, I got my computer just before USB 3.0 so I need to find a low profile PCIe 1x card to add USB 3.0 ports and connect the external bay to that. It has a real PCIe slot, but Dell disabled it for whatever reason. :( I'm making progress now...

RAID seems like a real pain.

Okay, I'm thinking about getting this JBOD enclosure. Mediasonic HF2-SU3S2 ProBox 4 Bay Hard Drive Enclosure with USB 3.0 & eSATA Some of the reviews mention they use it with storage pools. So that enclosure would work with SnapRAID and DrivePool?

RAID seems like a real pain.

So SnapRAID is like an open source version of DriveBender or DrivePool? Is there such thing as simple 4-bay hard drive enclosure that doesn't use RAID/JBOD where I can use SnapRaid or DrivePool?

RAID seems like a real pain.

What programs do people use to recover from a JBOD drive failing? If RAID isn't what I want, and you don't like JBOD, what would you recommend I do? Just stick with a number of separate external drives?

RAID seems like a real pain.

Okay, those seem cool. So it's software you install in Windows that manages multiple drives. Unfortuantely I think there are only two SATA ports in this Dell and they're already used. Is there any way to use one of those external USB 4-bay JBODs with DrivePool?
  30. S

RAID seems like a real pain.

A little more research and I was thinking of getting a 4-bay JBOD. I was under the impression it was just a bunch of disks. Then using software to copy one drive to another every so often. So it would be like having 4 separate external hard drives, but apparently JBOD mounts the disks as one...

RAID seems like a real pain.

It's not technically a backup, but they're both ways to survive data loss, right? So if I want to make sure my data isn't lost, I should just get a couple external drives and backup to them manually? Edit: Okay, I just did some googleing and yeah, redundancy isn't a backup. Not only that...

RAID seems like a real pain.

    1. Apparently WD Red drives are important because normal drives can drop out of the array. 2. ZFS you need a ton of memory that should be ECC since 1 bit gets flipped in memory it can corrupt the whole array. 3. If one drive fails, it's not uncommon for a second drive to fail during...

    Moore's law and CPUs

I've been out of the hardware world for a while, but I remember in the 90's CPUs were: 100Mhz 133Mhz 166Mhz 200Mhz ... Every single release was +33Mhz. How does that work? You're telling me every single breakthrough in CPUs just happened to be an additional 33Mhz, or consistent with...

    C++ vs. C++ .NET

    C++ vs. C++ .NET

What exactly are the differences between C++ and C++ .NET? It seems like I hear C++ is faster and more cross platform. If I want to learn to write Windows software, does that basically mean I should learn some kind of managed C++? Is that going to be easier writing software?
