There are 3 ways to run it. -RPi -Virtual Machine on an x86 based server -Container(s) I've deployed both directly on the RPi and on VM. The VM is an "all in one" package that actually runs their own proprietary OS. (I think it's now called HomeAssistant OS, previously HASSOS) The entire...

Diehard Nexus/Pixel user goes 12 Pro Max

I'm thinking about doing the same thing. My USB-C port on my Pixel 3XL has been broken for over a year and it's driving me nuts I can't connect it to my car for Android Auto. Any recent regrets from the people who made the switch here? How is Apple Carplay? Can I use Google Maps on Carplay?

802.11n Device Slow on 802.11ax Router

Can you individually set data rates per radio on a consumer router? If so, set the lowest data rate on the 2.4 ghz radio to be 65 mbps and allow all data rates higher than that. Also verify that any 2.4ghz specific antennas on the router itself are firmly connected. This will significantly...

802.11n Device Slow on 802.11ax Router

The issue is most likely with the data rates set on the new router. That one device will bring down the rest of your network in terms of speed. I would recommend replacing it or the WiFi card that's inside of it.

    RIP CentOS

My guess is that they they will just modify the terms of their existing development program to allow home use, more simultaneous installs and a more liberal enforcement mechanism however they will still state that for-profit companies will still have to pay I'm sure. Anybody who migrates from...

    RIP CentOS

Hahahaha. How nieve do they think we are? I'm sure IBM set revenue/margin targets for RedHat as a BU that left them scrambling looking for untapped revenue. Lowest hanging fruit were all of the "freeloaders" using CentOS in production but didn't need official support. So yeah, I'm sure this...

    RIP CentOS

Agreed on Oracle. I'd have no problem running Rocky on personal servers but selling it as an enterprise solution to internal stakeholders is going to be challenging to say the least. That's why I think SUSE may be the better way to go. I looked at RHEL's advertised pricing and licensing model...

    RIP CentOS

Agree with you on Ubuntu. Problem with Debian is that it is a community supported OS. That's why I think SUSE is the next logical choice. Uses RPM packages and uses the same binaries as SUSE enterprise linux. If you need to switch from openSUSE to SUSE enterprise, it should be as painless as...

    RIP CentOS

With IBM killing CentOS, what will the IT professionals here be moving to as a replacement? FYI - IBM unilaterally changed End of Support for CentOS8 from 2029 to 2021. End of Support for CentOS7 remains at 2024 but for all we know, they could change that to. Thinking of evaluating openSUSE to...

    2.5G Ethernet Switch Question

2.5/5GB switches are already starting to become more and more common place in the enterprise switching market. On average, the 48 port units cost about $1000 more then their 1G counterparts but I imagine this price delta will come down for the next 5 years. Given how you can run 2.5/5G on CAT6...

    Apple M1 SOC platform discussion

A lot of vague claims regarding performance and marketing speak. I feel like Apple is tightening their grip on their entire ecosystem and will get to the point that you can only install applications via their App Store. Not sure how this would work with enterprises, MDM, and custom proprietary...

Generally speaking. CAT 6 vs 7

Nobody uses CAT 7 or 8 (which is not even a standard) in the real world. Use CAT 6a with minimum 2” flexible inner duct that has pull strings back to a central location in the home. Limit angles of the tube so you can actually pull something through it. You could use solid conduit but it will...

Hugely disappointed with the screen size on Pixel 5 and the fact that it's only FHD. The screen on my Pixel 3 XL is better sans the refresh rate. Anyone else feel the same? I don't care that they didn't use the top end SOC, as long as the phone is smooth but I'm really bothered by the fact...

    WIFI 6 for gaming?

This depends on many factors and your overall application. But in a properly setup environment, the differences are typically very hard for the average user to see. If you are referring to MU-MIMO - while WiFi 6 AP's support MU-MIMO on both the downlink and uplink sides of broadcast, many WiFi...

Softbank selling ARM to Nvidia, finally after year of speculation...

I don't think NVidia is buying ARM to focus on Windows and the PC business. Quite frankly, that would be a step backwards rather than forwards - there's a reason why Apple is dumping x86 for Macbooks, the same onus should fall on Microsoft to get with the times. This is all about the next...

    Let's Talk IPV6

IPv6 is not going to become prolific until there's a financial reason to do so. This will happen when some random company needs a /24 for a project and finds that it now costs tens of thousands of dollars in the secondary market due to simple supply and demand. Although most of the major CDN's...

    PF Sense test box build

Does PFSense see both NICs? You have to specify which is LAN and which is WAN during setup. You then have to assign the static IP address, default route, and a static DNS server on the WAN interface.
