    3600 to 5600x or 5800x

Slade: you're absolutely correct and the extra NPC hit is exactly what i was alluding to. If we look at say Cyberpunk benchmark comparisons, reducing settings also reduces NPC's in the scenes improving performance so extra cores might come in handy in future titles if devs decide to take...

Hit a Folding (Stanford) milestone? Post it here:

Ya, I just found a newer PPD database and I see RX570-590 up to 490K. I knew the other one was old as it didn't have newer Nvidia PPD's after the CUDA update. Flushed that one from my favorites list. If he keeps the CPU's off and takes your undervolting advice he should be able to keep on...

    3600 to 5600x or 5800x

I disagree. With less IPC of the Zen+ in the consoles it's likely to be MORE important for devs to leverage the extra cores for performance when needed. This likely won't be for awhile yet until they figure out how to utilize the extra resources but previous limits are gone so now it's...

Hit a Folding (Stanford) milestone? Post it here:

Agent_N is giving solid advice. For instance my HTPC is folding 6 CPU threads for 25-30K ppd for 80-90 watts. My OC'd GTX1060 is using 150 watts but is getting me 800-900K ppd. I only started up the CPU for the recent TAAT challenge and have left it running for shits and giggles for an extra...

    3600 to 5600x or 5800x

Once you move up to 1440p the 5600X and 5800X will perform virtually the same in most current games as they don't utilize alot of threads. That said, SoTR spreads work out fairly evenly and does show improvement with more than 6 cores and seeing as how the new consoles have 8 cores/16 threads I...

Sound card to improve on ALC887

When my HTPC onboard ALC892 packed it in I went and got a Xonar SE. It's got higher SNR than the onboard, 5.1 audio, headphone amp with configurable gain and an optical SPDIF output (which is what I needed). No driver issues that plagued early Xonars and it was inexpensive. Worth a shot if you...

Folding@Home bigadv EOL 2nd Anniversary Challenge: The Race is over.

Motq you're showing 32M ppd right now so I'd imagine the needle on the power meter must be zooming around in circles, power target be damned. Then again maybe you've got a small "arm"y of Raspberry Pi's but with only 8100 WU's I'd say its mostly GPUs. Remote farming? BC Hydro might have decent...

Hit a Folding (Stanford) milestone? Post it here:

17 years to the month: 1 Billion pernts! Date of last Work Unit 2021-01-28 02:56:31 Total score 1,000,423,099 Total WUs 87,447 I was planning on ramping down a little after the milestone but we're in a challenge with TAAT so I'll keep it to the floor until its done.

Folding@Home bigadv EOL 2nd Anniversary Challenge: The Race is over.

Stanford added CUDA support to FAH. That's why the big increase across the board for Nvidia cards, close to double on everything NV. Radeons use OCL so no change for them. Probably better to steer team Red to BOINC

Folding@Home bigadv EOL 2nd Anniversary Challenge: The Race is over.

Count me in. I was gonna ramp it down a little once I reached 1B which should be mid-contest but instead I'll see if I can scratch up a useful GPU or 2 from the parts bin - just until the 30th. edit: have an RX580 which was going to sell and found an EVGA GTX750-SC which should fold fair enuff...

Mowing over high PPD folders from yesteryear

Ha! Well I'm not close enuff to the stove for that but it'd be nice if I was from the fridge - easier to get beer. Eh maybe not, wouldn't get as much exercise if it wasn't for coffee and beer fetching during these lockdowns. I do however just swivel my gaming chair 135 degrees and move about 2...

Mowing over high PPD folders from yesteryear

Ah yes, the pizza boxen. I never had one but I did have an AMD X4 mounted on a mobo tray (removed from a case I junked) perched precariously on a stack of cardboard boxes in the corner of my office. Naked and headless with the 2.5" HDD hanging by its wires over the side, it folded until the...

Mowing over high PPD folders from yesteryear

I came from SETI@home as well. Ran it anonymously in screensaver for awhile before becoming 'official' with a username. Then I changed to the Horde. Decided it was more worthwhile to improve health than look for E.T. (a buddy had muscular dystrophy). Once it went BOINC and I had more resources...

Mowing over high PPD folders from yesteryear

Way back I had a dual Pentium rig. It was an ASUS mobo but I don't remember the model number. The CPU's went on a daughterboard which plugged into a large slot on the mobo. I managed to get 2 P-233MMX's on it. I also managed to find some high capacity SIMMs so it had 320MB of EDO! Mind blowing...

Mowing over high PPD folders from yesteryear

Heh, I had a Q6600, AMD X4-965 & 1090T (4 GHz all 6 cores) all OC'd and had to endure getting a buzz-cut from some of our heavy mowers back in the day. I miss the old days with the tall talk and beer, tamales and popcorn. As for F@H now, I still crank on a GPU once in awhile for a few days a...

Folding with Nvidia cards = WOOOOOOOOO

Folding with Nvidia cards = WOOOOOOOOO

After reading this post I went and checked my 1060 running FAH on the HTPC and can confirm an improvement. Went from ~525K to 790-800K . I have my 1050 tasked with GPUgrid atm and I use the 1070Ti pretty heavily for gaming but if I get spare time I'll unpause FAH on it.

    World Community Grid

Similar story. Only SSD to die was a 120GB OCZ but it was the previous model and they sent me a Vertex for warranty replacement. It was the controller that went kaput. Vertex became the boot drive in my old main PC for over 6 years before I swapped it for a 250GB Sammy. Still works fine with...

    WCG THOR Challenge 2020

OK, I just read this thread in the wee hours of Sept 8 but I'm going out of town for a week. I'll fire up the HTPC and add it to WCG while I'm gone. Server plugs away 24/7 but power is at a premium here so my other rigs are usually idle or off. edit: wow it's slamming the 6 threads I gave it on...

RTX 3000 series for distributed computing.

AIB cards will prob have different fan choices more like we're used to seeing and then it's just the status quo. Good case/airflow choices should mitigate the issue.

3800xt from 3700x causing random reboots

You also might want to try DRAM calculator for Ryzen by 1usmus. It will give you min/recommended/max voltages as well as all kinds of subtimings. For instance my GSkill 3600 CL16 (which I manually set) would very occasionally become unstable. I set the SOC to 1.05v as recommended and saw...

RTX 3000 series for distributed computing.

Just go stealth then. Get a case with a solid side panel instead of a window, replace any tool-less thumbscrews with real screws and lock your toolbox. It's just one more GPU, "harmless" you might say. What she doesn't know … ;)

RTX 3000 series for distributed computing.

I would guess its architectural. For instance concurrent FP and Integer ops, etc. and some projects benefit from it as frequency didn't improve much if at all. My 1070Ti & 1060 will do 2GHz+ easily and the 1050 1.95GHz with little effort .

Good video, very pertinent. thx for the linkage AA .
