Reliable phones that don't bootloop, have a good DAC and a headphones jack..

I would agree -- for the most part. LG does make a pretty good quality phone that doesn't exactly crush you with amount of bloatware that some other brands do. They try to innovate also (although so did HTC and look where it got them!) as evidenced by the G5 modular design and the V20...

My ASROCK motherboard is dead, what should I do?

This is certainly the case. The vast majority of most motherboard brands are manufactured by Foxconn and all from the same facility. I have used many mobo brands in the last 20+ years - Abit, Asus, DFI, Gigabyte, MSI, ASRock and EVGA - most have been trouble-free, a few have had varying...

Oneplus 7 Pro - Screen Protectors

Going with naked OEM glass does offer a good experience especially if the coatings are high quality.

Compromise between feature set and price point. Too many whistles like wireless charging, SD slot, and IP rating would take away from their one marketing strength -- price.

My ASROCK motherboard is dead, what should I do?

While using a unit that has line conditioning to regulate voltage does help, it still doesn't change the fact that many PSUs are built with less internal protection in place. Especially with the increasing popularity (and cheaper manufacturing costs) of single rail PSUs, much of the overcurrent...

what do you do with old video cards

As mentioned, 3dfx voodoo/voodoo2 cards are popular for their ability to run classic milestone games that were optimized for their Glide 3D API. Glide optimized he's would render better performance due to their code and lower CPU usage. Some of the greatest Glide games, aside from I76 and...

what do you do with old video cards

From a performance standpoint, SCSI optical drives didn't have that much separation from their IDE counterparts. There were significant benefits from SCSI models however... Better build quality - SCSI models were generally premium components. IDE models were mass produced to meet a lower...

    OnePlus 7 and 7 Pro

Speaking of wireless charging... It looks like the upcoming Oneplus 8 lite, Oneplus 8, and Oneplus 8 Pro, through leaked spec sheets, all do NOT feature wireless charging. I guess they feel their improved 50W warp charging (how healthy is that for batteries?) will suit a fill gap for the lack...

what do you do with old video cards

Just a brief look on eBay -- there is a selling market for them! People are fething $80-$200 for some models. I have the old school 2x Plexwriters too - this is before Plextor started using disc trays. My model used the disc case for the disc then inserting the case into the drive. Pretty...

what do you do with old video cards

I hear there is even a market for old SCSI optical drives over in Europe? I probably still have a couple of old Plextor SCSI internal drives up in my attic PC parts corner somewhere. Old modems too -- Old US Robotics modems (300,1200, 2400 baud), ISDN modems....etc.

If you have it already, might as well use it...for sure. However, for what you're using it for, even that is plenty more that what the demands call for.

what do you do with old video cards

Not quite as retro as an old 3dfx or Matrox card, but an old/trusty Q6600 with a slim 8800GT OC'd is a good recipe. The GTS cards - bigger and the extra 128mb memory - takes a backseat to the GT, imo. You can still game reasonably, today, with that setup.

what do you do with old video cards

My first multi-gpu set up was a pair of 3dfx voodoo cards in sli. I did a bit of chest thumping back in the day. Lol.

what do you do with old video cards

Wow....hard to believe that there's still a global demand for 3dfx cards -- and to think, I probably tossed about 3 old 3dfx cards a couple years ago. 3dfx...brings back memories.

My ASROCK motherboard is dead, what should I do?

Yep, that smell is a the worst buzz kill. Semi common with PSUs also, particularly if left to overheat or subject to surge. Important to use surge protector with an isolated ground, like an isobar.

My New SSD drive from BHPhoto appears to have been used before?

Speaking of Crucial MX500, I've used a couple MX500s myself in the last two years. I just got my first M2 drive last week and it was a MX500. I probably should have spent a little extra and gotten a NVMe version instead but $52 for a 500gb M2 sata was a good deal. They're very nice. Very fast...

My ASROCK motherboard is dead, what should I do?

It's really incredibly hard these days to wreck a CPU. They are generally tolerant. I wouldn't be surprised, as mentioned by another, that one or more of your mobo's vrms went bad and subsequently created voltage irregularities. I'd also theorize that the root cause probably started in your...

I would have liked to have seen wireless charging. Not that I'm an advocate of preferring to charge a battery this way, I do like the idea of a contingency charging method in the event of USB port failure.

    Installing M.2 Sata

Very helpful insight. I actually did notice the note rafrind the shared SATA lanes. However, I have no sata ports in use during my struggles. I will consider a NVMe drive in future builds, but being that I wanted to dabble a bit, I went for the lower price point - however perhaps I'll use...

    Installing M.2 Sata

I'm chalking it up to a case of improper seating. I'll make more attention to this detail in future installs. I just wanted to make sure I wasn't missing any simple mistakes related to this style of storage. Is heat an issue with these drives?

    OnePlus 7 and 7 Pro

Not sure about the 6, but it appears the 7 Pro has a pretty easy path to swapping out the battery. Although given the very cheap repair parts prices ($11 for a battery), it might just be work paying their small labor fee and sending the phone to oneplus. I've owned more LG phones that any...

    Installing M.2 Sata

Hello, I wanted to use a M.2 drive on one of my builds for the first time this week. I've used 2.5" ssds for the last several years. Got myself a Crucial MX500 SATA, popped it into my new ASRock B450M Pro4. Fired it up and Bios doesn't see the drive. Removed and reseated. Still didn't see...

Oneplus 7 Pro - Screen Protectors

Interesting how the adhesive only cures to the glass protector itself and not the phones glass. How is the quality of the protector itself? Are the coatings close to OEM glass? I've heard wide varying accounts in the area also.

Oneplus 7 Pro - Screen Protectors

Yes, I agree. Between the tray guide and better quality UV light, I can see where it would justify the 3x price. I'd pay it if it only mean a superior and reliable adhesive. I'm guessing that Whitestone version is a one and done installation attempt? Meaning if you didn't get a good install...

Oneplus 7 Pro - Screen Protectors

My apologies, I was referring to removal of some of the off brand versions. Some threads have suggested that, unlike the Whitestone, that some off brand models have adhesive that actually stay stuck in the phone screen rather than completely bonded to the protector like demonstrated in your...

Oneplus 7 Pro - Screen Protectors

Only direct sales versions from Oneplus come with the preinstalled screen protector. Carrier versions do not. Truly unfortunate. Regarding the off brand alternatives, I understand the biggest issue are inconsistencies of the the adhesives and their mixed ability to properly cure. Hard to tell...

The 7T Pro McClaren has a 1st Gen 5G modem and the 2020 Qualcomm 865 will have improvements with mandatory 5G (and likely a better, more power efficient antenna) requirements. However, the 5G modem will still be separate from the SoC and until Qualcomm brings out a new chip with an integrated...

Oneplus 7 Pro - Screen Protectors

Whitestone the only reliable one out there compared to the off-brand ones? My experience with wet applied soft film has been above average with Ghost Armor. They're pricey and generally only available direct from their site or from any retail kiosk that you may have in your area. Still...

Oneplus 7 Pro - Screen Protectors

What have you 7 Pro owners used for a screen protector and have been pleased with? I have not been a consistent user of screen protectors in the last couple of years, but am concerned as the 7 Pro has been my first owned phone with curved sides. I looked at the liquid adhesive solutions (white...

    OnePlus 7 and 7 Pro

I think the market for the 7 Pro is just greatly diminishing with the release of the McClaren 7T Pro and the upcoming 120hz display 8 Pro. They're smart to try to clear out inventory now. Its still an excellent phone and anyone would be happy to jump on pricing like that for a flagship phone.

    OnePlus 7 and 7 Pro

OnePlus has been pushing a steady diet of updates for the 7 series. When they rolled out the 10 update, it was pretty prompt but was buggy. That being said, they realized this and pushed out fixed versions less than a week later fixing most issues. Carrier versions in many cases fall victim to...

Reliable phones that don't bootloop, have a good DAC and a headphones jack..

LG seems to have struggles with their bootloop issues. I had bootloop issues with both my LG V20s in the past - and one of my LG G2s. I've since moved over to Oneplus and have been very happy. I just got a pair of LG G8s for my sons...will be curious to see how they hold up after a couple of...
