I went with the ZOTAC GTX 1080 AMP! Extreme and have been very, very impressed with build quality and overclocking. So far I've only taken the card to 2101 core / 5500 memory without a voltage bump just custom fan profile. Temps haven't risen above 65 degrees. This card is massive by the way...
NVIDIA GeForce GTX 980 Ti video card benchmark result - Intel Core i7-6700K,ASUSTeK COMPUTER INC. MAXIMUS VIII RANGER (5082)
Windows 10 Pro, 6700k @ 4.5GHz, 16GB DDR4 3000, GTX 980Ti @ 1500/8000.
Just replaced a GTX 980 SC with this card and am very pleased with the bump in performance and acoustics. Quick OC to 1500/7700 yields 9200 in 3dmark Firestrike Extreme 1.1
It'd be nice if Newegg allowed "Standard return policy" on these GTX 980 Ti's instead of "Replacement only" -- this being the case forces me to not buy from them on this particular occasion.
That is definitely not normal. Are the clocks dropping down to 135/324 when the card is idle - your screenshot shows 1000/1750? Maybe there's a program running in the background keeping the GPU under load where it won't drop down to idle clocks and voltage. For reference with a custom fan...
Coming from a GTX 780 Ti Classified I am thoroughly impressed with this GTX 980 SC.
3dmark Firestrike Extreme score: 6619 http://www.3dmark.com/3dm/4174342
Quick OC of 1500mhz GPU / 7500mhz MMY / +40mV -- need to tweak fan profile a bit as the core dropped to 1480 or so for a few during...
Can you post your specs/motherboard and any settings not left to AUTO in the BIOS ? I'm rock solid @ a manual 1.21 vcore setting for 4.5GHz, a few DGM+ changes, XMP profile for RAM, everything else AUTO; however, I think there's room for improvement.
And nice chip by the way
I just came from a 4.5GHz 2600k to this 4790k @ 4.5GHz and so far haven't noticed any performance difference in games. Granted I've only tried Planetside 2 and a few other less demanding ones -- 3dmark Firestrike Extreme is within a few points between the two platforms. If I didn't have a buyer...
Oh, I was unaware there is a difference between a 4770k and a 4790k save for stock clock values and lower temps (there isn't). So I'd say you are ¨missing something¨. Also, CPUs are not irrelevant to game performance............unless you have a Sandy/Ivybridge (which is why I posted that link).
Just in case anyone with a Sandy or Ivybridge was feeling the ¨itch¨ to upgrade *and is mainly concerned with gaming performance: http://www.ocaholic.ch/modules/smartsection/item.php?itemid=1164 (place your time/effort/money elsewhere in the system)

Ugh, another random misinterpreting and inserting his own nonsense. I can assure you I am not justifying my purchase. Out of pocket it cost me $90 to upgrade if you want to talk money. 3gb of memory, what is your point? (I don't actually care)
I upgraded from a highly overclocked GTX 780 to a highly overclocked GTX 780 Ti and there's a quantifiable difference in performance that I feel was worth the extra money spent.
