ARECA Owner's Thread (SAS/SATA RAID Cards)

It doesn't much matter if the data is static, performance is degraded as new writes are much more likely to be fragmented. Everybody knows if you want maximum performance you should keep your hard drive(s) less than full. If you're under 80% full and still seeing poor performance, you might...

ARECA Owner's Thread (SAS/SATA RAID Cards)

So I removed the 1882ix-16 and Windows booted fine. Then I removed the battery backup from the RAID card, and it stopped beeping. It was the beeper on the battery backup that had been beeping, not the RAID beeper. I put the RAID card back in the PC and it booted fine. So it looks like the...

Did you ever replace your ARC-1882ix-12 fan, and if so what did you use?

ARECA Owner's Thread (SAS/SATA RAID Cards)

Yes, I have a battery backup. PCs have a 5V standby power supply as well, which is hot even when the PC is "off". I have no idea which is powering the beeper, or if the periodic beeping is trying to tell me something. I'll report back after work this evening. I think after I switched to UEFI...

ARECA Owner's Thread (SAS/SATA RAID Cards)

A couple days ago my Windows 10 Pro PC with Areca ARC-1882ix-16 crashed and rebooted in the middle of the night, but got stuck at the windows logo screen with the spinning circle. Thinking it was a corrupted windows NVME SSD, I did a fresh Windows install to an old spinny hard drive to try and...

LOL, I think we all know how to make labels. Is there no identifying data on the drive itself that can be read by the card? It is probably a good idea to label them just in case.

Can't say I have ever had a need to use these commands. Should one need to do this, how would you know which drive goes where?

10Gb SFP+ card for RAID PC to switch, Sonnet Presto Solo reviews?

The Ubiquiti US-16-XG switch has 170Gb of non-blocking BW, it is unlikely to be a bottleneck. Good point regarding Gbytes vs Gbits. I tried re-running iPerf to check, but something was blocking the network connection. It wasn't Windows 10 firewall, will have to check the new pfSense router -...

10Gb SFP+ card for RAID PC to switch, Sonnet Presto Solo reviews?

Just wanted to update this thread; I've connected two PCs using Mellanox MCX311A-XCAT ConnectX-3 EN SFP+ to a US-16-XG Ubiquiti switch uplinked to a pfSense router running on Supermicro X11SDV-4C-TP8F 10Gb SFP+ Xeon-D motherboard. It is impressive, I know have true SAN speeds to my RAID array...

10Gb SFP+ card for RAID PC to switch, Sonnet Presto Solo reviews?

10Gbase-T will be the option for most boards, but SFP+ is available now and will be in the future. I just bought a Supermicro FlexATX board with two SFP+ ports, although admittedly not a "consumer" boad, this was for the network router upgrade. I'm actually looking right now at an 4-year-old...

10Gb SFP+ card for RAID PC to switch, Sonnet Presto Solo reviews?

I chose an X99 motherboard with sufficient slots for this reason, but 5 years from now it will be nice to replace to a motherboard with native 10Gb SFP+.

I'm going to use these with Windows, fiber and transceiver. Where do you buy these cards for $40, or did you mean $140?

10Gb SFP+ card for RAID PC to switch, Sonnet Presto Solo reviews?

I would like to connect my PC RAID server to US-16-XG Ubiquiti 10Gb switch using SFP+. I would prefer only a single port, and would like it to be PICe3.0 X4, so as to not to unduly burden my expansion slot requirements. PCIe X8 just isn't needed for a single-port card on PCIe3.0. But if the best...

ARECA Owner's Thread (SAS/SATA RAID Cards)

I haven't looked at the ARECA BIOS user interface, if that is what you mean by "DOS". I don't believe MS-DOS is involved with this at all. You have to update each file, not sure why you're having trouble.

ARECA Owner's Thread (SAS/SATA RAID Cards)

I think you update each file individually, not select them all in the browse for file window in your web browser. On my 1882 it shows current versions of all firmware including the BIOS.

ARECA Owner's Thread (SAS/SATA RAID Cards)

I did install a RAID backup battery per your suggestion. I may not go with a full UPS for the whole server and network for quite a while. I have had UPS' in the past, and have found them to be expensive, high-maintenance and failure prone. Electric power is reliable at my location so I find...

ARECA Owner's Thread (SAS/SATA RAID Cards)

I have been in communication with Areca regarding the inability of the ARC-1882i-16 (and probably their newer 1883 and 1884 models) to recognize and (presumably) configure ERC/TLER/CCTL with the Western Digital DC HC530 14TB drives. Areca support seems to want me to prove that these drives...

The old array has been copied to the new array using Robocopy in Windows Powershell, a very convenient tool that preserves permissions and timestamps. Currently h2testw utility linked above is being run in the free space of the array to check for disk dropouts due to apparent incompatibility...

ARECA Owner's Thread (SAS/SATA RAID Cards)

maxxmusterr, if by "go to an individual drive" you mean the web interface to the 1882ix-16, I don't see TLER/ERC/CCTL terminology shown. Error Recovery Control is shown as disabled for the new 14TB disk array. However, Error Recovery Control is also shown as disabled for the Hitachi 3TB array...

I can't read German, not sure that tool will do me much good. I have never had a backup battery on this RAID card. I used to have a UPS, but grew tired of failed batteries (which I could deal with) and failed electronics. I will get a new UPS for the server with the RAID array eventually. I...

ARECA Owner's Thread (SAS/SATA RAID Cards)

The 4 X 14TB Western Digital drives in my last 4 slots of ARC-1882ix-16 are building a RAID5 array currently at 17% after 12 hours. 42GB usable storage compared to my 12 X 3TB Hitachi RAID6 at 30GB. This could take a few days. After testing and moving my data I'll pull the old 3TB drives, buy...

Already pulled the trigger on 14TB Western Digital DC HC530 "Hitachi" SATA drives. Couldn't let that extra storage escape me during my once-a-decade RAID hard drive migration. Here's a link to the large, modern helium drives with an ARC-1882ix-16 thread. I'm going to buy a few WD DC HC530 14TB drives, which apparently are Hitachi Helioseal thanks to the merger. If you have any advice, please join the conversation. It may be relevant to quite a few of we Areca owners.

maxxmusterr, brouhaha if you're interested in the modern HDD vs. ARC-1882ix-16 saga I'm going to start with 4 of these Western Digital 14TB Ultrastar DC HC530 drives in RAID5 to check Error Recovery Control (ERC) and general compatibility with my ARC-1882ix-16 card. ARECA Owner's Thread (SAS/SATA RAID Cards)

It's time to finally make a move on a hard drive upgrade to my 1882ix-16. Yeah, it is no longer the newest card, but if I can find compatible drives I don't see a reason to upgrade the card, especially given the cost. I want to use 12TB Hitachi with 4K native sector drive base on excellent...

Thanks, just got a stick to try out as part of my 1882ix-16 RAID6 drive upgrade. Edit: I got a used 8GB stick of Ebay from a decomissioned server for $16. Exact ADATA part number you mention. My media server boots much faster now, and file transfers between the RAID array and a local SSD are...

Thanks for the clarification. There has been a lot of merger/acquisition activity in the hard drive space, rendering our experiences with particular brand names no longer accurate. Western Digital had a well-deserved reputation of lesser quality and lifespan, supported by extensive data from...

Good info, thanks. I am partial to Toshiba/Hitachi, and now there are 14TB non-shingled drives available. In a perfect world I would start my upgraded RAID array with these babies. But of course there is always the compatibility question, which seems to never be answered by the mfg's. Not...

I checked Areca's HCL, but it hasn't been updated for 6 months. It doesn't seem like there are too many drives listed, but we know the list isn't exhaustive. You would think any decent HDD would have this feature by now, but sometimes the command to enable it has changed and the RAID card...

Here is the HGST page for the 12TB drives. They have an interesting article on RAID "rebuild assist recovery". There is also a note on the new power disable pin feature. Not sure my old Norco 4220 would be compatible, but they still sell the drive without this feature for legacy chassis. I...

I need to upgrade my Areca 1882ix-16 to larger drives, ideally 12TB PMR. I have always been partial to HGST drives and currently have the well-respected 3TB models in my array. Unfortunately this thread indicates there are/were significant problems with time-outs, whose RAID-compatible time...
